I always took AiC for granted when i was younger. Its only now that Ive really started to appreciate them. Wish id been more involved in their movement. Awesome band, probably one of the best rock singers of all time.
It’s a funny thing. When I was in college in 1998 if you asked me my favorite band I would’ve named Nirvana or 10 different rap groups (Tupac, Tribe, Ice Cube, Dre, Biggie, etc) but one day in 1998 I realized I had every AIC CD ever released in my 12 disc changer in my car, and I never skipped AIC songs when they played at random. I remember that afternoon realizing they were actually my favorite band. Was a great treat having my 16 year old son invite and drive me to an AIC concert here in Houston in 2012, we had a blast.
Music aside, such a mature song given how young Jerry was when he wrote it. Jerry really encapsulates that whole "be the bigger person" philosophy, the olive branches to his brother and father communicated through his songwriting are incredibly inspirational, especially in an age where people feel the need to double down on everything. Takes a certain courage to put yourself out there and make peace by being the first one to move. Music not aside.. it's also a beautiful song. Guess I should finish the video though to learn more about 😉
I just stumbled on your channel yesterday. Honestly, it's the best analysis of music I've seen. Keep up the great work. Your passion for it really shows.
According to Jerry, this song was supposedly about Jerry's half-brother. but I definitely can see how this is about Layne & Jerry. And I agree, I actually like the fact that Layne & Jerry aren't perfectly in-step while singing. I can hear them both listening to each other -- especially Layne listening to Jerry and adjusting. (I'm a vocalist but haven't sung in ages and since I am a soprano, I can't read music -- talk about living up to a stereotype lol)
I love this performance too. Even though I am an Ann Wilson fan, I like Layne's backing vocals much better. Also I love the part when the instruments stop and it's just the two guys singing.
Those harmony parts in the chorus are insane! I had to pick up my own guitar to test them out. I've always loved the song, partly because of the harmony , but mainly because of the cool simple main riff. I never analyzed the vocals tho.. Just when I thought I couldn't love AIC more, they still surprise me with the coolest stuff! Thanks for this, man!
So go and listen to Layne in the final mix, where there are only two tracks and all these details are hard to grasp. I for one am grateful someone takes the time to figure this out. It's like hanging out with an expert musician friend enjoying the music we love.

The harmonies and instruments they achieved this night are among the best I've ever heard. The bass sounds incredible!
Hell yeah
Finally someone who breaks down the AIC harmonies for me. I love them so much but couldn't make sense of them musically before.
It's been a long listening journey and I'm still not sure! Haha thanks for watching
Layne is the GOAT! You should analyze Junkhead and Sludge Factory
