    Thanks for your great effort in guiding young civil engineers (like me)! I'm a fourth-year undergrad student and I just finished an intern at a structural design company. I totally agree that some voices on the internet did discourage me to do structural design but it turned out that I really enjoyed working in this industry.

    Mat, thank you for taking the time to answer my question! I’ve been working an internship while taking classes for the past year and really love my work and all of the professionals I work with love their jobs too! I appreciate your thoughts on why there is so much negativity floating around on the Internet. We definitely need more positive people like you that better represent us structural engineers! Thanks for what you do!

    Question for the future:
    What qualifications differ from a Licensed Civil PE who practices structural vs. a Structural Engineer (SE). Is there a limit on to how high you can engineer a building before you need to be an SE? (I.e an apartment complex that is 4-stories high, can a licensed Civil PE who practices structural and is competent in that stamp it or does it need to be an SE?)

    • @scottwible1532
      @scottwible1532 2 года назад +1

      It is different depending on the State. On the west coast you need an SE to design high importance structures like schools, hospitals, fire and police stations and high rise structures. In general any structure with more than 300 lives at risk will need an SE stamp. In other states like Texas you only need a PE license.

    • @MatPicardal
      @MatPicardal  2 года назад +2

      I'm not a specialist on this, but most of the foreign workers I know went to university in the U.S. and got a job after/during their studies. I believe it's tougher if you didn't go to university here, but good work experience definitely helps. I've heard visa requirements make it very tough as well if you're not a student.

    I'd be interested to know more about CA PE exam, specifically what it takes to become a CA PE for PE's from the other states and the level of its difficulty comparing to morning SE problems.

    • @scottwible1532
      @scottwible1532 2 года назад +2

      I'll go ahead and answer this too as I have my CA PE and SE... The PE exam is the same in every state, the only difference is the CA PE requires you also pass the California Civil Seismic exam and the Civil Surveying exam. For structural engineers that do seismic design, the seismic test is very easy. The Surveying exam is extremely challenging, as there aren't good practice problems or practice exams out there. I believe there are around 55 multiple choice questions and you have 2.5 hours to complete the test. None of it has anything to do with engineering and you are rushing very fast as you only get like 3 minutes per question. The pass rate is very low, about 29%. The only advantage to getting the CA PE is that you can get your license in the state of California, also you can take your PE exam with only 2 years of work experience with a BS degree (or 1 year of experience with an MS degree) in the state of California. I did it so I could sit for the exam 2 years earlier than in Washington state.
      The morning Vertical SE exam is easier than the Surveying Exam. The morning Lateral SE exam is harder than the Surveying exam. The PE exam and the CA Seismic exam are much easier than the SE.

    • @denfl6605
      @denfl6605 2 года назад

      @@scottwible1532 Thanks for the answer. I completely forgot about surveying exam. I didn't realize it is as hard as you make it sound. Though your comparison with SE didn't make it much clearer to me how hard the surveying exam is. Lateral morning session was actually easier to me that the Vertical. I thought I can just knock CA PE out just by using my SE background, but I definitely don't want to study surveying until I actually need it.

      @@Balkan951 Personally, 90k is not enough to make it worth it, however since I just passed my SE exam I will be opening up my own engineering company next month, and my income will likely go up significantly. It depends on what your personal goals are for the career.

      @@scottwible1532 Great plan! I'd love to know more about how this transition goes for structural engineers around the country. Hopefully Mat will pass his SE exam, will start his own practice one day and will tell his story :) .
      Do you expect that cash will flow in right away or you are financially prepared for something like first 6 months without sufficient income? Having a decent salary and no other income in the household make this transition for me quite difficult.

    • @scottwible1532
      @scottwible1532 2 года назад +1

      @@denfl6605 Hey Den, great questions. I do have several loyal clients that will come with me. I anticipate having sufficient cash flow from the beginning to keep the lights on and the mortgage paid. The real challenge will be if I can attract enough new work to stay busy full time. I do have large cash reserves at the moment as a safely net, my wife has a full time job, and we don't have children yet. I also have a mentor with their own successful structural engineering company.
      I encourage you to not compare your situation to mine. If you have a goal, the only thing that matters is your personal plan, and your will to achieve it. Where there is a will, there is a way. Your biggest asset to starting your own company is your network of clients. They will support you through the beginning.
