    Narratives change.
When I was young a terrorist was IRA, then PLO, then any Muslim.
But never an Israeli or a Saudi.
Now in rapid succession our enemies are Chinese, Russians, Iranians again and maybe swathes of Africa.
Too many people also want to be exceptional and there is not much room in front of the mirror.

Don't you see the urgency to stop this madman? Of course, we need to interfere to try to wake up the Russian people. It is not the same. There is no equivalency between a democracy and a tyranny.

Let us just start with what we know:
    1. Minsk required Ukraine to
    grant some autonomy to
    Donesk and Luhansk.
    2. in the Instabul negotiations,
    Putin requested Neutrality
    and Harald Kujat former
    Chairman of NATO Military
    Committee confirmed the
    negotiations as he was
    part of the facilitators.
    3. In his Tucker interview,
    Putin expresses his
    openness to negotiations.
Now, Gates asserts that Putin is unwilling to negotiate and there is no one to negotiate with.
He knows that his assertion is false. All through out the interview he is very calm and uses his hands to emphasize his points, no discomfort whatsoever.
Except for 25:09 when he begins answering that question. It is the only time he fidgets and somehow mock scratches his eyebrows around 25:39.
I maybe wrong but it seems so obvious the amount of discomfort as he answers that question.

    • @ourworld215

not to mention it's currently againsy Ukraineing law to negotiate with Russia. He advocates for going after civil infrastructure. Further indicates The past interfernce in Russia was not minor. Thus the constant labeling parinoia and endless accusations of Russia's elite aysemtrical abilites but having to reuse chips from washing machines becase they are a gas station bbubbling fools who will take over oall of Europe........
I was very happy to hear Gates knock down the nuke scare tactics. He not only gave good logic of why they wouold / could not use nukes effectivly was perfect. Even while not refering to our Star Wars program that Bushnell has diecribed nasa efforts to create rapid sattelite destruction in time of war. I think lasers or swarm drones lajnched from space are far more likely then nukes.

      @TomMcinerney-g9b 7 месяцев назад +1

Nada. He wrote a paper, late '70s arguing that the USSR was not sustainable (not the first to make the argument).
I never voted for Reagan, but after he made trusting friends with Gorbachev (which gave Gorby the space to enact reforms), and GHW Bush continued the cooperative relationship, made weapons agreements, obtained reunification of Germany {even V. Putin has said that the old Soviet regime needed to change}, and the East European Warsaw Pact
obtained independence ... Wow, great job! And Robert Gates has made many contributions since then.

The United States can inflict pain on Russia as a policy. Sadly, so can Russia as it has escalation dominance as Obama said. The longer the war lasts, the more land Ukraine looses, and the weaker the EU/NATO becomes.

A lot would have to change, including the leadership of the U.S. Agency for Global Media #USAGM and the Voice of America #VOA, for the suggestions made by Robert Gates to have any chance of success in countering Putin’s propaganda.
For one thing, I would remove Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) and other surrogate broadcasters from USAGM’s control, and drastically reduce if not completely eliminate the dysfunctional and bureaucratic USAGM.

First: please, put this great, insightful interview on WAPO's website as a rush transcription. It's such a treasure trove in facts any strategy.
Such a great, useful exchange. Sec Gates, a cold war experienced, intellectual and highly analytical mind brings to the table what many observers do not: factual knowledge, and calm reasoning. In every answer he's laying out strategy, the reason behind it and additional facts to back it up. If that man would engage with decision makers in Europe, first and foremost in Germany, that could move the needle into the right direction.
Thank you sir, from a former Member of the Defense Committee of the German Bundestag from the CDU party (of chancellors Kohl, Merkel, Adenauer).
Greetings from Putin's potential next front, Kosovo.
    Stefan Schwarz

America needs leaders who believe in freedom and justice. Not the opinions of lobbyists. Those (like Netanyahu) who make peaceful revolution impossible make violent revolution inevitable. I'm sure I heard that from a 'clear eyed, serious and loyal American," once upon a time.
