My dad was there! So proud of him. Amagansett, NY volunteer fire department. He watched over some massive propane tanks. Respect all of the firefighters who've risked their lives for the safety of others.
I remember on a trip to Long Beach to visit family friends seeing coverage of this fire on the news, seeing the images of the wild flames. I could only imagine in my wildest nightmares what seeing that up close must have been like.
i remember this fire like yesterday, this fire cost all the local departments about 15 trucks that got stuck and burned due to poorly maintained fire breaks and roads. its over 25 years later and the poorly maintained fire breaks and roads are now gone and we have little to no way to get our trucks into the woods now like we could back then. thanks to the pine barrens society and the nysdec the next fires we have will be even worse than the 1995 fires. our trucks cant fight fire unless we can access the woods in a mildy safe manner. local fire departments were requesting to have these areas maintained before 1995 and ever since
Very similar to 2024 fall wild fire season with Suffolk Ulster Orange County and pretty much the whole North East is in a drought! Great job to all my fellow firefighters that fought these fires this years as well in 1995! Wildfires are scary phenomenon from the devil but the dedication from the firefighters contains these monstrous blazes!
There are Pine Barrens near Albany, NY as well. You are on an ISLAND !!! Build some de-salinization plants on both the north and south shores, to use sea water to fight the droughts.
If this fire was to happen today with social media we would hear it's the end of the world, global warming, we did this to ourselves, this is going to be the new normal and what ever people could come up with to sound important same thing with Sandy this is the new normal expect more storm frequently and bigger than Sandy 10 years later still waiting for bigger storm then Sandy.

Every time I hike or bike out there I notice a lot of dead trees all over the place. Need some burns to keep this from happening again
Long Islands the best!!
They screwed up early on. They should have called New Jersey Forest Fire Service. 😂😂
