That’s pretty ironic, considering how much range he actually had to play in Being John M. He played himself as the stereotype, himself discovering that he’s being observed from within, himself as controlled by Craig, himself as controlled by Lester.

I actually auditioned for this movie a good 7 years before it was released. The basics of the story were explained, but they never identified Malkovich as the person who the characters were entering and there was no suggestion that the person in question was famous in any way. They were just looking for faces to populate his imagination with apparently, but most of those ended up just being Malkovich himself.
I love this movie and the actor, but i find his performance just fine, i mean, it didnt asked much of his capacity... and the 2000 oscar went to Kevin Spacey for American Beauty (1999), what i find very fair.

Not just that dance scene. At times, Malkovich is playing another character (John Cusak's, Cameron Diaz's, etc.) possessing the character of John Malkovich, which is of course a fictional version of himself. He has to act like another person possessing a fictional version of himself . . . and he pulls it off beautifully. When he's possessed, he acts like John Cusak's or Cameron Diaz's characters, and he acts like he is those characters pretending to be the fictional version of himself. That's like three layers of meta-method acting. It's a really, really great performance.

The bit where Charlie Sheen (of all people) is the friend he turns to when he thinks he's going crazy, the scene with Brad Pitt giving Catherine Keener the side eye at a red carpet because she's more popular than him, the part where Lester is talking about who to live with forever at the end and brings up Gary Sinise. Lol! This movie was so Coen Brothers. Loved it.

Malkovitch is a bit confused with the timing there. Being John Malkovich's first draft is from 1995 - when he finished Mulholland Falls (the movie he mentioned by Lee Tamahori). The movie was made in 1998, three years later, not 6 or more as he mentioned.
The advanced makeup and facial prosthetics that he had to wear in that movie in order to play John Malkovich was considered to be ground breaking at the time.
For the curious, the Lee Tomahori movie he mentions is Mulholland Falls, which came out in 1996. Being John Malkovich came out in 1999 so the time gap likely wasnt as great as Malkovich suggests here.
@@martitinkovich4489 You might imagine curious people might wondering, "who was that director he mentioned?" "How do you spell his name?" "What was the movie he was working on?"
