- July 9, 2018 | Abby O'Neill -- When Dave Chappelle jumped on to the mic to introduce harmonica player Frédéric Yonnet and The Band With No Name, it was clear this would be a special Tiny Desk. Chappelle and Yonnet's decade-long friendship started when Chappelle invited the French musician to play his Block Party tour in 2006. Yonnet later became the musical host of Dave Chappelle's Juke Joint, a series of intimate parties featuring Yonnet, The Band With No Name, and an all-star cast of unannounced musicians and actors.
Yonnet (pronounced YAH-nay) kicked off the Tiny Desk concert with a mélange of New Orleans jazz and funk. From the moment the NPR staff first heard his pocket-sized harmonica, you could feel the electricity in the room. There are virtually no limitations to this instrument in the hands of Yonnet, who is famous for his ability to play chromatic notes on a diatonic harmonica. It's one of the reasons he's toured with Stevie Wonder, Prince, Erykah Badu and Ed Sheeran. During Chappelle's introduction, he told the crowd about how Yonnet met Wonder at the Grammys and was asked to hop on the Songs In the Key of Life tour. "He's so good at playing harmonica that another man good at harmonica hired him," Chappelle joked.
Yonnet and his Band With No Name were right in the pocket with original funky numbers "Four20" and "FRéEDlosophy," both of which will appear on his upcoming album, Reed My Lips. Chappelle's desire to hear some of that "Mississippi Delta blues" prompted "No Smokin' Blues," which gave guitarist Robbie McDonald, saxophonist Matthew Rippetoe, trumpet player Joe Herrera and keyboardist Daryl Hunt a chance to shine.
After his friend's Tiny Desk concert ended, Chappelle spent an hour touring the NPR newsroom, where he mimicked NPR's newscasters and teased them with genuine affection. It was a great respite from the daily news cycle.

Damn.... he made that harmonica sound like an accordion and a violin, a flute and a clarinet at the same time...... amazing 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Dave Chapelle has to have the most diverse phone contact list in the world lol
Martha Steward actually has that top spot but Dave is close.
lol
Emmanuel Brioché I wonder do they have each other's numbers
Smooooth These are the questions we need to be asking
OMG YESSSSSSSS!
Totally getting the last Grammy's vibe. "Hi, I'm Dave Chappelle." Can he just show up on a white house Press meeting?
Can Tiny Desk kill it any harder? Find out next week on "Beethoven with special guest the ghost of Kurt Cobain: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert."
Killed with the hottest axe ever played.

He's getting an ear full of that high hat
Dave asked for 'sweltering heat, I don't get paid enough blues' and them boys more than delivered. Truly impeccable.
NIGGA I FELT THE HEAT.
Man, that six string bass is a gorgeous piece of weaponry!!
Carl Bowden warfare against sphincters
Handled by a master.
Indeed, its a wonderful Ibanez workshop. Have on of those, beast of a bass
I take it you've had the pleasure of experiencing Animals as Leaders? They do sick things with 8 strings...

Lmbo!🤣🤣🤣
Damn... what an amazing harp player! But holy hell what a band... so TIGHT! The drummer's groove is just immense.
This is truly the best performance I've actually seen in a while, my only slight sadness is not getting a bass and drum solo. Otherwise, I'm utterly blown away.
same! I would have loved a bass solo!
Look them up: Dennis Turner and Chris Bynum
Fantastic. I have never heard a harmonica played like that :O. And I loved the tiny, beautiful child in the back, just taking it all in :). Wonder what he'll grow up to be...
As someone who grew up on Mississippi Delta Blues smack dab in the middle of the Delta- best TD concert! Dave Chappelle is hilarious- love his dance breakdown in the second song! Lol!!
Sonny Terry smiles in heaven at this !!
Dads don’t get enough credit. Look at that man play his bass while taking care of his baby girl, beautiful!
Mr. White hey thanks for the comment but that’s my son! His name is Kellen and he’s becoming quite the musician (drums) himself ! Salute!
Mr. D. Turner - I am so sorry to mistaken your son for a daughter. He’s a beautiful child regardless. Keep up the good work !
Mr. White thanks kind sir. Appreciate the kind words
As always the tiny desk offers the best audio/visual with the best of the best players. Thank you, sound and video engineers.
That band is tight as hell. The drummer, especially, is badass. Great stuff.
Love Fred!!!! ❤ I met him and Dave Chappell once in Yellowsprings when he performed there!!! One of the best days in my life!
This band is RIDICULOUS. Yonnet kills per usual. Tiny Desk is the place to watch, tell anyone who doesn't know yet!!!
That's how you lead a band
Remember Dave Chapelle block street parties back in the day, brought out The Roots, Erykah, Jill Scott etc.
Misses Mandarin - facts
My rookie brother Dennis on bass!! ♥️♥️♥️ 🎸 NSU behold the green and gold!

Bar lines just don't exist for the bass player. Dennis you're an absolute monster mate.
Brother Yonnet.... THANK YOU FOR KEEPING THE SOUND OF THE HARMONICA ALIVE.... Thank you for bringing us all this soul.
A part of me feels guilty because I shouldn't be able to get this for free.
Become a contributer. Npr is ran off of donations.
you deserve good things... for free.
You and your guilt.... LEAVE THIS AMAZING PLACE OF FREE ONCE IN A LIFE TIME MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT 🤣🤣🤷
well technically it's not free. you're paying for your data which you're using to stream so yeah....
Hahaha, I know, right! Fuck, man, theres a lot of shit out there... then theres this. We got it good!
OMG I COULD LISTEN TO THIS ALL DAY. I especially love Frederic Yonnet

That lil boy is soaking up greatness
Every single time Tiny Desk. It's like opening up the best gift I never even knew I needed or wanted.
My dad played the harmonica and I used to beat box, so I'm totally digging this.🎙🎧🎤
Oh my that harp wailed... Some ol Blues.... Gimmie some ol blues Yonnet
Great band, and Dave Chappelle just seems so at home in any setting, what a treat!!
I am so shocked this only has 800,000 views, Dave Chapelle with a musician that perform with prince and tour with Stevie wonder , this needs more views!
Set List
"Four20" (2:07)
"FRéEDlosophy" (6:56)
"No Smokin' Blues" (10:36)
Excellent musicianship!!! Wow! To play a random song like that and have a leader to direct what he wants is amazing! Wow! 👍👍👍
Dave Chappelle!!!! 🤩
These live recordings should be on 45s with simple white covers. Like a "one of a kind" EP
I love the fact that musicians can just get together and improv on a groove, and just crank out something beautiful out of thin air.

Artistic freedom
So many harmonica players just beat us up with it, playing with no subtlety or regard for the how loud and shrill it can be drowning out their fellow players. When it sounds like they are swinging a goose you know it has gone wrong. He is truly amazing using it to the full range from a whisper to a scream and using it as a percussion instrument while teasing out lyric melody. He also seems to have a way of putting more air into the end sound at times, the way Ben Webster did with his sax. No wonder he gets to play with so many greats!! Plus Chapelle to boot! This was a hootenanny to remember! You see, he drops the mike down to the desk for the last one so his band can be chill and there will be balance. Every harp player needs to see this!!!!
That blues jam gave the goose pimples.
I have never heard a harmonica sound like this before!!!! It almost sounded like a string instrument at times😍😍😍😍
Notice Dave DID NOT have his cellphone out recording...See, he practices what he preaches lol...
Well, Dave lives more in a year than most of us probably do in 20.
he doing everything with the harmonica. DAMN!!!!
The lil' mascot.. Just sitting back, chillin, holding it down. Knew he had to be the bass players kid.. But look out! He's checking out the drums, so it is a toss up. Yonnet is a master of the harp, but also a masterful band leader. Reminds me of the big band leaders of of 40's. Let's his band members shine. Only so much time, I know, but wish the bass and drums bad a solo moment. What more can be said of Dave Chappelle?... the comedic genius of our time!
Brup...Brup...Brup! The best Tiny Desk thus far. Wish I was there to rock out with the band!
What a great way to start a Monday morning with NPR Music, Dave Chappelle, Frédéric Yonnet and The Band With No Name.
Je ne suis pas spécialement chauvin mais ça fait plaisir de voir un français à NPR. Thank you to Tiny Desk Concert, dont les artistes sont, comme Frédéric, invariablement enthousiastes et bons.
His fuckin' skill with that harmonica is... unbelievable. Mind blown, for sure.
How he enjoys music, watching his last specials, how he talks in Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee... Chapelle really seems to be enjoying this part of his life.
Frederic was amazing, the band was amazing, and the sound engineer(Josh Rogosin) did an amazing job bringing it all together.
Tiny Desks like this are the gems I keep hoping to find!
What an incredible performance. I just saw him at Summerfest in Milwaukee and I can tell you him and his band are just as tight live as they were here!
This was Definitely something Special!!! The Band With No Name always Shine, & Fred Yonnett is the G.O.A.T.🐐
Dave Chappelle made me click, but damn the music made me stay
had me in tears 😭 thank you so much
All I could do on that last song was smile, close my eyes, and sway with the music! Loved it, and thank you NPR for the introduction!
People who master a very nice and beautiful niche like harmonica's are beyond just special.
Just to provide an expanded explanation, when I say niche I mean no disrespect, just that it takes a special talent to master some instruments that a very small part of the population could achieve
damn, that harmonica got so much soul.
Glad u like it!
Frédéric Yonnet thats a diatonic harp... Speechless, you and Howard Levy are light years beyond.
You know the music is good when there is a kid on the band's corner and you only notice him the third time you played the video.
INSANE REGGAE HARMONICA...WOW!!
I love this so much. I would pay serious money to watch the "Band With No Name" do a two hour set.
Yooooo!!!! Keep it coming! Music is LIFE!!! Frederick and the Band with no name is AMAZING! Love you Dave!
This man is blessed by the great god of breath control. My goodness...
Dave Chappelle is one of few I'd let touch my aux cord🙌🏾
That little kid sitting behind the base and next to the drummer probably doesn't realize it yet, but he is having the best day EVER!
So I just started my Monday to this. I never had any idea that a harmonica could give me so much life. I am ready to fight Thanos.
here i am on another monday, seeing this for the first time, and feeling the same way.
Try out Blues Traveler

Mr Garcia the last song was by far the most telling of their selects!
Dude is dope AF
I have no words! Just wonderful! Whoa! Remarkable! Just Wow!~
Never seen a harmonica player lead a band, let alone so well
God damn this kids incredible! I don’t ever wanna hear harmonica in another song again, everyone else obviously doesn’t know how to use it...and Jesus man, the last thing they played, the improv jam session...beyond fantastic man! I fucking love this shit! Thanks NPR, Fred and the band with no name. Just made my fuckin day. The NPR guys must be looking at each other like...”this might be the best thing we’ve ever seen here...”
This Group and Frederic can absolutely transport you to Groove town. This train is one I will get on again ..........tell people about this Music......tell them.
Now this is some PROPER blues.
This is so damn charming. I don't know what to do with myself but dance it out.
Mission accomplished
Somewhat of a virtuoso on an extremely hard instrument. I wonder if he is playing a chromatic harp? The entire band is wonderful and enhances his playing so well. NEVER thought I'd hear a harp with hints of Reggae and Indian. Amazing.
No it's diatonic man that's why he's good, he bends and draws to play chromatic scales on a diatonic harp which is just mad. Especially on harmonicas that aren"t modified.
Band is KILLING!
Pure passion! 🔥✊🏾
Recon with him on that harmonica you will loose! Admire his contribution to the world of HARMONICA! ✊🏾🦋✊🏾🔥❤️✍🏾
Plus a great band all WIN WIn ! 🤘🏾
