Is it the slower twist on the 7 wsm that gives it the extra speed?
It should generate less friction in the barrel. But you would want optimal pressure behind the bullet from the right powder with optimal resistance in the barrel.
    The 7 wsm looks great.
It shot thight and fast, not much more to ask of a cartridge.

So, keep going with the 7mm WSM, and see how accurate and flat shoot you can make this round with ABLRs and other bonded or mono-metal bullets with its 9.5 or tighter twist. Pls keep us advised with more videos; love your channel's productions. With the fantastic engineering Win/Brng put into the 6.8 Western, if they may follow up with a 7.0 Western and a 7.62mm Western, look out. Hey RW, great vid. 7 WSM is such an underrated cartridge! At 1:45 ish you compared a 67gr H1000 load in the 7 PRC to the 7 WSM. The reason the 7 WSM is faster is because it has significantly more pressure due to less case capacity. Pressure = velocity.
I'd highly recommend trying out Gordons Reloading Tool. It's free, has tons of powders, bullets and cartridges and when I measured out my .308 Wins exact details, it showed 2783fps and I got 2776fps in real life. It's a really fun tool to use to compare what cartridges can do and what should work best for them.
    Keep up the good content.

      @ReloadingWeatherby  2 месяца назад +1

Thanks for your comment. I use GRT on a regular basis. Yep I'm aware that the smaller 7 WSM case is the reason it went faster with the same amount of powder. I truly think the 7mm PRC needs a 26 inch barrel to get it's true potential.

@@ReloadingWeatherby would you say you've had accurate results from GRT compared to real life results? Like I said I've had good luck so far.
I absolutely agree on 26" for the 7 PRC, but honestly I think most magnums should be 26". I personally want a 28" or maybe 30" when I finally get to build a magnum rifle. .300 PRC is looking like the top candidate for me.

    • @ReloadingWeatherby
      @ReloadingWeatherby  2 месяца назад +1

@marcmoore4115 Very accurate results. GRT has been so helpful for me with the Weatherby cartridges. The load data from books are always 200-300 FPS off. GRT is usually within 20-50 FPS.
I should have been more clear about why the 7 WSM was faster. With the 7mm PRC having a slightly bigger case you can put more powder in it to get more velocity... as long as you don't have pressure. Which Sadly with two 7mm PRC rifles I tested... I would hit pressure at 67 gr of H1000.
I would recommend you get a 300 PRC. It's a good modern cartridge. I just loaded up some ammo for a friend with a 300 PRC. When you have a minute go check out his video results. The channel is called The Big Timber Lodge

According to Berger’s stability calculator your bullet is marginally stable at a 1.23 SG. As velocity and RPM’s decrease with range, so will the bullet’s stability. Hornady advertises that bullet’s use for hunting up to 400 yards, so I think you’ll probably be just fine unless you start taking 500+ yard shots.
As far as powder goes, have you considered Hornady 4831SC/SSC? I’ve found that it works well in my 338WM pushing 230 grain ELD-X bullets to 2810 FPS, which is Hornady PH advertised velocity.

I have absolutely nothing to go on other than somewhere in Utah. It’s likely much higher than that, so it will be affected to your benefit the higher the elevation. If you’re running at 1.50 then you’re slightly more stable than my initial calculations. If that’s true, then your bullet should be stable enough at just about any velocity over 2000. I’m sure we could narrow it down to the decimal point with more accurate data, but in the general sense I’m thinking it’ll be fine for average distances and speeds from the WSM. 2860 FPS for a 175 is nothing to sneeze at, and I’m guesstimating that your bullet won’t destabilize until much further down range. If I’m wrong, and I could very well be, a 160, 162, 165, or 168 may prove to be just as good for your needs. It’s all great content. Keep it coming! I enjoy seeing what works and what doesn’t. I have an In-Rut rifle, 24" 8 twist K&P 4 groove cut-rifled barrel with a Pure Precision Titanium Summit action. I just looked up my initial data on it, also using H1000 and 175 ELDX. Very similar numbers to yours. I think their is a slight advantage with your 7WSM shooting same bullet and powder because of the slower twist rate. I'm not an expert but everything I read and hear is the slower the twist, the faster the bullet, but I've never done any of my own testing to see what difference in velocities are common. That said, I will be testing several 270-7PRCs with all load data identical, once they are all completed, using 8, 8.5, 9, and 9.5 twist rates, all with 170 Berger EOLs and 165 ABLRs.
Here's what I did so far in the above referenced 7PRC, COL 3.284. I matched the COL with the factory Federal ammo using the same bullet since it shot in the 0.2s in this rifle. I plan to seat it out to max COL and retest. No pressure signs yet:
    66.0 grains - 2841
    67.0 grains - 2844.4
    67.5 grains - 2844.5
    68.0 grains - 2898
    68.5 grains - 2897.1
    69.0 grains - 2942.6
I plan to keep going up on charges until I see pressure signs
Slower than your 7WSM. But look at what could possibly be repeatable numbers between 66.0 and 67.5, and again from 68 to 68.5 grains of powder. Darn near zero ES/SD. I used new ADG brass and Federal 215 match primers. I'm wondering what speeds I would have seen if I had used Winchester large rifle magnum primers since they are hotter and always produce faster velocities in my experience. I already saw a 60-70fps increase with the WLR vs the Fed 210 match primers in my 308s with 130 TTSX over TAC

In a 24” barrel with the 175gr I’m easily getting mid 3000-3100 fps.

None of the speeds I’ve seen on your videos are close to what mine or my mates guns are doing with the same projectile while maintaining .75 or better for 5 rounds in hunting rigs.
70.5 gr of h1000 gives me around 3050fps but Sd and ES suck. Accuracy never over moa and hovers around .8-.9 .
Now 68gr of 4831 gave me .5 at worst accuracy changing between primers and a max velocity of 3035fps with single digit SD.
No pressure signs at all with either load using ADG brass.
This is a rebarrel Tikka action not some rem clone custom also.

      Nope
Accuracy well that’s dependent on many many factors as you know so can’t even be considered.

I’ve had good results with monos with lead fouling in the barrel, but more importantly I’ve yet to see anyone really put the claim to a thorough test. It just seems to be another way for copper bullet makers to make excuses for why you may be seeing inaccuracy and it’s starting to get into the fud lore now that Ron Spomer keeps mentioning it every time he tests any ammo and Jim from Backfire had it happen once. I’m not saying it’s not a real thing for certain barrels or certain projectiles, but it feels like we’re all just blindly accepting this is the case without testing. Let an experienced F class of PRS guy work up and run a match load with monos and then demonstrate that the load falls apart up after the barrel has some gilding metal fouling in it.

You must be right, you are obsessed at delegitimizing the 7mm PRC. Too much time on this topic, if I may be so bold as to say…

@@ReloadingWeatherby there isn’t anything wrong with the comparison. I shouldn’t have said anything. ✌️

I don’t get why anyone cares what case people choose to seat a bullet into. They all push a bullet to useful velocities. One may be a bit faster, marketing hype may have been a bit off, but who cares?

You will find that the long bullets will actually settle down and group better at longer ranges in the 7 wsm
