Same issues are at central focus today 35 years after this. Whenever individual blacks and black organizations whether they be political or nonpolitical address concerns about to racial prejudice, bias, and discrimination, it almost alway met with deflection from whites and even some blacks. I've noticed that many whites will often site statics about "black on black crime", out of wedlock births in the black community, blacks see themselves as "victims", or the Democratic party has failed blacks. They tend isolate blacks and make it a "black problem" not an "American problem." What some whites will do is that they will present individuals achievements and gains by blacks to justify that there is no systematic racism and that "see blacks can make it."
A lot of people in this comment section are doing exactly what you're talking about.
