I wore my GT shirt on set one day, and was glad to preach the good word of your channel to anyone who asked. Looks like I'll have to buy it in black now...
Along with Modern, you can get straight from the speed rail distributor, Hollaender, for some more "DIY" or any other fitting/build you could think of. Modern does have that pre-build/cut, so that is nice. You forgot one thing you definitely should also buy... A gallon sized ziplock baggy of set screws.
SO 2 quick questions. Do they make the sliding piece for mini 5/8 wall spreader or is it just for the 1 1/4 & 1 1/2? Also, If I had to use this one, could I make the thicker piece shorter so that it doesn't look odd in my home studio, or do they have to be of equal length? Thanks!
Not sure about 5/8. And keep the thicker piece bigger than the smaller. Sturdier that way. Like in theory the middle will be offset to the shorter side if that makes sense. But the majority of the spread should be the bigger pipe. Hope this helps
Considering this rig on dry wall would require stud placement to be taken into account, are their some surface thicknesses you haven't needed to align with studs to feel safe with the rig, for example bathroom wall tile. Hardly any spud finders can accurately read depth levels like that. So would you even bother with that process? Would a surface like tiles be tough enough on it's own to handle the pressure of this rig? Cheers.
SHD cement or brick, like an alleyway outside. Idk about tile to be honest. With demolition I’ve done in bathrooms, Tile isn’t exactly strong. It could crush or snap I feel like. Good question!
Picked up a couple sets Dave, thanks. I'm also heading to the local metal place to buy that 1" sched 40. Quick question though, Do you have to use different gear to hang lights from this vs 1 1/4"? I know that some of my clamps are designed for regular sized speedrail. What would you recommend for clamping to the 1" section?
Dave, I just put the whole telescoping unit together and it rocks! Nice and solid, and no more cutting the 1 1/4" speedrail to fit. Yay! But I'm still looking forward to seeing what 1-1/4 clamps are working for you so I know what else to buy. None of the clamps I use on my 1-1/4 work, including Matthews right-angle grid clamps (cheeseboros), Matthews baby grid clamps and Avenger C4461 MP couplers with junior pins. They all just slip right off the 1" speedrail. So let me know, and B&H, here I come!
Maybe try making short cuts of the 1-1/4 speedrail that slip over the 1" like the piece with the slot that's included in the kit. Slip those over the 1" rail at all mounting points and use a set screw to keep everything in place
Mason Howard I always say to start looking for local metal manufacturers first because typically that’s gonna be a lot cheaper. You won’t find it at Home Depot, Lowe’s, or any of those big box stores but just google “metal stock suppliers near me” or just stop by a machine shop anywhere and ask them who their metal distributors are as most metal stock carriers aren’t that internet savvy I’ve found. If you can’t find any locally than I would recommend stopping by msegrip.com or modern studio equipment or American as the bigger grip companies always have metal components in their inventory. One of the tricks I’ve done is waited for modern studio equipment to have a “modern Monday” 35% off sale and then splurge on that. As it turns out, if you order just 9 rails, shipping gets really cheap, but when you order the tenth, the shipping gets expensive. Hope this helps

Man, your set has really improved over the years. The lighting is looking great!
I've been wondering how these things work. Thanks for the great tutorial! ✌
Ya, this is the best all around setup of the three. Useful for the most situations in my opinion.
It’s totally great but it turns out it doesn’t hold as much as the 2x4, which I thought would have been the other way around
FYI: LA Rag houser also makes a telescoping wall spreader kit.

Just picked up some of my own speedrail and that kit, Looking forward to the world of grip! Thanks for the videos!
I love Modern but if you're not familiar with Panther Wall Spreader or Filou Wallbreaker I suggest you check them out :)

This is so much easier. Thanks Dave!

Hi! I'd like to know how this compares to an autopole or a maxipole. I imagine it is easier to transport. Can it handle more weight?

Rick Gates same stuff, just don’t overload. I’m actually doing a spreader break test tonite. But all the same stuff as 1-1/4

How much weight can these handle?
Nothing bigger then an Arrimax (don't try that)
I feel like this rig would is perhaps the weakest of the three, but it's certainly the most convenient for transportation/.
What 1" speed rail do you recommend?
Mason Howard if we’re talking about the spreader kits? The telescoping one. If we’re just talking about rail in general? 1-1/4

Hey Dave it’s Dylan, your favorite.
Shy Guy Hahahaha nice!
Ok that’s better ;)
does the pipe have to be real speed rail? Can I just go buy pipe from Home Depot? I've wondered this same thing for goal posts, menace arms, etc.
Matt Black no, conduit and the like are too weak, and steel is too heavy
I got myself a Manfrotto Autopole 2 instead for the moment.
