Anyone want to share a story when they made a mistake? Also - drop links to your photo websites/business below. I want to see your portfolios and businesses :)
My first time Shooting SLog 2 was a client project. My grading looked like trash, had to resort to LUTS. Luckily it worked out, but woof Great video man! Lots of good info in this one!
Not long ago I was on the phone with a client and they asked how much it was going to cost for the project. I gave them what was meant to be a rough ballpark off the top of my head and not an exact quote. I sent a follow-up email to recap our conversation (this way I always have things in writing from phone calls 😂) I listed out the full cost and break down of rates, it totaled up to be about $600 more than my initial estimate 15 minutes earlier. They said it had already been approved by corporate and they couldn't go higher... They decided to use a corporate employee who sometimes takes photos as a hobby instead 🤦🏻♂️ Ya live and ya learn
Soo (a couple of years ago lol) a local restaurant (I’m from a tiny holiday town where everyone knows everyone) wanted one of my prints on a special beer for the summer and we kinda agreed on a price.. beers looked amazing, everyone loved the print and bought them because of the print too and I sent them the bill (which was already a rip off for me but oh well they promised to advertise my name too which they didn’t) and I hear nothing back, no money no nothing... turns out they thought I charged too much and wanted to discuss it with me when I came back from my trip to Australia... still have not been paid 🤦🏼♀️ havent updated my website in about 3 years but I’ve got some stuff on the gram @jessicaskantze
Being overconfident about a timeline. A couple of......weeks ago lol, I overconfidently set a deadline for today. I didnt take into account that life (and weather) happens and now I have to ask for more time. Very unprofessional on my part 😔. Love the inspiration that your videos give us!
Chris Hau my mistakes have involved not going with my gut feeling when I had a strong feeling that the client would be difficult to work with. I proceeded because I needed the money, but those have always been the worst clients. Now I'm very selective on the type of client's I work with to avoid working with the wrong personality types.
I’m glad you said, “the first few years were rough...” Needed to hear that today. 2020 will be my fifth year as a photographer but my second year as a full time business owner and it puts in perspective to hear how other people’s, particularly successful people’s, first couple years went. Thank you 🙏🏼
Man, Chris. I needed this today. Recently went into business for myself in the last year and I relate to the struggles in a big way. Feels like every day is a constant struggle. It's great to see that successful photographers made the same mistakes early on. Today was especially hard. Thanks for this.
Chris I love the humility you have to share about all your mistakes. There’s not a lot of people who put themselves out there like that to better other people. I know I’ve personally made a couple mistakes that align with one of your points. Thank you for your authenticity!
Can't believe this actually happened! If I would have thought of how to convey this lessons and try to think up the worst case story to make them relatable, it would have been just that! These were unbelievable!
Testing out your gear on personal projects is REALLY good tip and a mistake that I wish I avoided! Especially when doing weddings. This also gives you a chance to be more creative AND effective when you're using it for an actual client! 👌
I've obviously loved your videos for a while now but idk something about this video took you to another level for me. Everything was paced and timed perfectly! And the constant back and forth of having a camera in a weird/unique spot to someone filming you (I'm assuming Lizzie?) worked perfectly! And all your videos (especially this one) have a genuine and unique charm to them. Loved this video!
once again, I enjoyed my AMSR clap! But for real I needed this video at this exact moment. I got a harsh comment from a family member (just started my business in AUG 19) and was feeling pretty crappy! Now I am ready to keep pushing and keep making great photos so thanks Chris!
Loved this one Chris! I’ve just went full time with my business, I’ve been running since I was 14. I have made mistakes, which have all led me to learn and grow. One time, I did a portrait shoot, and my hard drive went corrupt, and I lost all the photos, and months worth of work. Now I’m backing up everything!!
This is only the second video of yours that I have watched, but I really like the style and how we watch you go about your day. It makes it a lot more interesting with the stories.
Dude! you are the only guy on RUclips who reminds me so naturally to hit the like button. Works every single time! Thanks for the insight, have a great trip and come visit Norway :)
Dude I think you just became my new favorite RUclipsr. Your content is dope. Great dynamic storytelling. I like how you're moving from place to place. It gives the story momentum. And of course great on screen presentation.
This is the best video I've seen you create. I loved how you took us along with you throughout your day by starting breakfast to just running errands. Plus you managed to deliver helpful content. You did an outstanding job with this video and content thanks chris. Please make more videos like this I love em!
Solid Video! Great advice I totally agree with so much of this. Being in business for 6 years myself and have made many mistakes. Also - I love it when your editor gets featured. I want to know more about them.
This is a great video Chris. I’ve been starting my photo/video business from the ground up and sometimes I get discouraged because I have so little gear. But yeah, this is encouraging because nobody ever started out perfect.
Keeps these vids coming! Absolutely loving the style you’ve got going right now! Extremely helpful btw! I can say I’ve been in that... some of those positions before 🙄🙈
I wish I were like everyone else and just felt my way through things and learned from my mistakes as I went along. I overthink things to the point where I need to be perfect in order to start. Can anyone else relate?
Yup! I've allowed myself two years to develop a future business plan. And I"m 72 and don't have those two years to waste! "Perfect is the enemy of good." Voltaire
ONE SECOND. Can we all take moment to appreciate the thumbnail, coz Chris, you're looking sharp man! And as usual your video is saving my life as a young filmmaker in third world India! :D
Tipp for the Shell in the EG: Catch it with a nother Shell, like the half one you already have in you Hand. Works easier then catching it with your finger Thanks for the video, helps me while creating my own business :)
Having everything in writing is really understated and not emphasized enough to beginners. I think it comes in second just after safety first. And not only to have everything in writing but having it well detailed with all the dates, times...etc etc every single detail. If it's a contract get someone to proof read it and weed out any mistakes. If you can get a lawyer to look at it from a legal perspective...you're eliminating all possible loop holes. For example I once made an invoice after doing some computer maintenance for a client but the invoice did not contain proper payment instructions or deadlines and guess what? The client took forever to pay me. I got paid in 2 installments and after several follow ups. If there was a payment deadline or penalty for late payment on the invoice and the client was aware of it then it might have been a different case. No matter what your case is never ever assume things. It doesn't hurt if you confirm whether the other party understands the fine print.
I love this. I haven't watched you in awhile, but after taking a long hiatus it seems like your doing better than ever! Great Video Chris! It was entertaining and informative!
@@thechrishauyeah... So i need videos like this... And someday I'll go to canada, i really wanna visit canada and i wanna take some short course about filmmaking or something like that to improve my knowledge... I take film major in my country, and i still wanna learn from many perspective... 🤣🤣🤣
Hey Chris great video, I am at the beginning of my own business career in photo and video. I can relate to a few of these mistakes as I have made some in the past. You are right the reward is great and I enjoying the time watching my baby girl grow by starting your own business.
Its relieving to hear someone else messed up a bunch of times and I feel less embarrassed for my own mess ups. There are many ways things can go wrong but the one important thing or advice is to reorganize ones activity after each mess up and write a good policy to prevent it from happening again. Just to think, yeah, I´ll remember it for the future. No, there are just too many things to keep track on. To have several check lists is also a good tip to not causing to much trouble for oneself and others. After a while one will have bunch of good policies and check lists : )
Curtis this was really awesome. I love how you out it together. This is the kind of 'outside the box' thinking that takes videos to the next level! You're a big inspiration to me and my Channel dude!
Great video Chris! Can you make a video or point us towards place to learn the legal/business side of a photography/video business? Aka Setting up an LLC/Sole proprietorship, how to factor in taxes, legal contracts, that kind of stuff?
Great video Chris! Get everything in writing before you start the project! I had an issue with a hard drive a client gave me that was unreadable, it was my biggest $$$$, but because of the delay I got annoyed and cancelled the whole project. ‘It’s ok to make mistakes’, that’ s so encouraging, Chris, nice video.
As a self employed one man architectural office I well understand Chris - "Trial by fire", we do learn by our mistakes.
Interesting to hear you mistakes. especially from a beginner who's making loads of them. Thanks for the inspiration to keep going.
