- Creating a fabulous winter/spring display with layer upon layer of spring bulbs topped off with winter bedding A technique I’ve been using for around 15 years but now known as the bulb lasagne.
Don’t be tempted overpack each layer and never allow your bulbs to touch, there’s two ways of approaching this in my opinion the first is to create a colour coordinated cohesive display giving you a spectacular show all at once but for me it’s about drawing out the flowering season and making sure each pot works just as hard as it can for as long as it can before it needs replacing with something else, My bulb lasagna contains the following
Allium atropurpureum tulip Uncle Tom Tulip Angelique. Narcissus Tete a Tete. Narcissus tresamble and iris blue note
I’ve then topped it off with. Blue and white polyanthus and mixed Pansy, #gardenerben

Wonderful tips, thank you. 🙂
Do you have any pictures of any of your previous 'lasagne' displays? That would be awesome to see the various shows during the months of spring.
Great ideas Ben ...thanks best find me a big pot👍
Thank you so much! Incredibly useful! I'll be doing this next weekend ☺️
Amazing👌 Thanq :)
You're fantastic Ben. My favorite RUclips gardener. Thank you for all of the great videos! I'm with you on loving lots of color!
Thank you
Great video Ben! I think I will have to replant my lasagne as I can see I've packed way too many bulbs into my terracota pots lol! It is great to make mistakes and learn and get it right. Thank you
If you dont mind, could you please let me know what pot size you like for your bulb planting?
This one’s around 40cm across
What is the width of the pot you are planting in?
Hi there, I understand your container is 40cm wide, could you tell me how deep it is, please? I've watched a tons of videos on 'bulb lasagne' planting but yours is the first that suggests putting in a layer of grit, which seems very logical - I'm assuming that once it is planted up there's no need for watering and we just leave things to Mother Nature until late spring?
This particular tub is actually quite deep around 70 cm. It’s a large one the grit is for several things one adds a little bit of drainage and secondly if you do choose to dig up your bulb lasagna, it’s a symbol that you’ve reached the bottom layer so you don’t have to take out any more compost, although scrawling around looking for any more bulbs. Lots of people would leave a container like this to come back here after year. However this beautiful one is emptied by myself and is then planted up for the summer and autumn. With something else. You should keep a close eye on your watering. Well temperatures are still warm you can then probably leave it well alone during the depths of the winter November through to January, but as the bulb start to come up in February, you should be checking the watering at least once a week
Many thanks for your prompt reply. I'm new to container gardening - previously avoiding it due to concerns over finding time to devote sufficient time to watering. I've invested in an irrigation system to help me and will attention to your advice. Thanks
