While Mr. Sam Jonah has raised very valid points, my question to him and other people of his generation who have amassed huge fortunes at the expense of Ghana, is "what are doing to help Ghana? What legacy are you leaving Ghana after you became a multimillionaire from appropriating Ghana's gold resources to yourself?
I get your point Maame. Sir Jonah's speech sounds cheap and a lot of us feel disgruntled because we believe they have amassed wealth for themselves. This is all valid. However, the talk is not cheap. Again he lead the company to become the first African operating company company in 1996 to list on the NYSE to raise funds. Now to understand why this was necessary try and research on the economy of Ghana between 1990 and 1999 and you will understand why the government needed to sell between 20-25 % of its shares and why AGC subsequently had to financially re-engineer to keep the mine alive and productive . The problem that arose from 1999 could not be put squarely on Sir Jonah’s competency though he could be held responsible being in the herm of affairs of the company.... but it was one of market and expert failure which is common with derivatives . A giant like Goldman Sachs at the time was the leader of the transaction. This happens you can forcast and the market market may turn differently . Be it as it may as good as he was as a leader he made sure he salvaged the company by the record merger of Ashanti and Anglo. He was one of the founders of the minerals commission of Ghana . He has done many things for the economy of this country and has significant investments in this country, Mobus, Griffins, Richfield (to mention but a few.). But a lot people don’t know because he is not a braggart. Usually he wouldn’t speak but when it matters he does. Please read on this great man and perhaps you will understand where he is coming from . I was fortunate to live and see him at work on the mine and I know what his works meant to the miners and the country as a whole. Every one of the 10,000 mine worker got 5 shares of AGC shares traded on the GSE for free. Now think about that for a people.

Sam K Jonah should look at himself first. Once upon a time Sam Jonah - was the President of AngloGold Ashanti. But what sustainable development did Sam Jonah bring to the people, the town and community of Obuasi where the gold mining took place? ONLY POVERTY AND DEPRIVATION.
"if you're my age, and have serious concerns about the future of the next generation, it would indeed be irresponsible, not to speak up" - Sir Sam Jonah
Mr Jonah, few decades ago, you failed to manage ashanti gold. You amassed great wealth in doing same. Eventhough, you are making sense now.. we can't get past your previous deeds. Apologies to the people of Ghana first and if you are honest enough pay restitution. Then proceed to lecture us.
Mr. Snr citizen, i want to ask u a straight fwd question. During your time at Obuasi goldfields, why couldnt you turn that town into a modern city? To indeed reflect a gold hub of west Africa. Today you're snr citizen. Looking back, what are your greatest regrets?
Well said... But not enough I’m sorry! You’re in a very good position to empower graduates etc by setting up institutions to increase innovation and leadership. Yet nothing but talk..we need action sir! Getting a job in Gh isn’t for the faint hearted; rejections left right unless you compromise your values... Most of your colleagues do not even want to be replaced; meanwhile they can take the back seat and mentor the next generation. I don’t know about others but such interviews really saddens me.
Sitting in your corner and thinking you know all that happens with them about empowering others and mentoring is your first mistake. This interview is saddening but I am pretty sure your context is different for the damaging facts reviewed is your second.
Nana Addo government exceed dictatorship. We know a dictatorship leaders in military uniforms but now we are experiencing a dictator in suit. It’s like a pastor who is seen as an Apostle of God found doing something against the Bible it’s worse than a sinner who is ignorance about the Bible. Mr Jonas you are the father of Ghana 🇬🇭
Indeed this man is never serious. Why is he now coming out to see all this crap? When He stole all that money from Ghana he went and invested it in S. Africa. You know what he was afraid of j J Rawlings due the crazy things he Sam Jonah did and escaped the 79 revolution to s. Africa. Now he see Rawlings is gone so he can come out now.
The next thing he will be running for Ghana 🇬🇭 President, those who make things happen here in overseas are not the smart ones but it takes determination and love for country to build a great nation. God Bless Ghana 🇬🇭 we shall overcome one day but maybe not our present generation.
Ok...I will start producing the toothpick...but you people should buy oo. Because if you don't, that's the end of my toothpick business. Btw...the price is gonna be a little much higher because you know, I am just getting started and can not compete with cheap imported toothpicks. So please help me lobby the president to increase the tariffs on imported toothpicks. Of course it is going to hurt those importers, but who cares?? It will help me. Afterall, there are no perfect solutions, only trade-offs. So please leave your number if you want to buy your toothpick from me.
Most people in Africa reward thieves with praises and accolades. Sam Jonah collapsed Ashanti Goldfields but he became a billionaire. Rawlings once described him as a GREEDY person..
@@jameskenny3374 so he must shut up, if things are not right? If you had spoken like he's doing now, he couldn't and wouldn't have collapsed Ashanti. In any case, is he speaking untruths?
Let us begin by committing ourselves to the truth to see it like it is, and tell it like it is, to find the truth, to speak the truth, and to live the truth.
I confess I didn't listen to the whole video but no doubt I can guess the rest. See, from a 7 year old Child in Ghana or Africa we all know without question, the real economic woes and how they should be tackled. Africa has been a paradox for centuries. Completely rich in minerals and manpower yet completely poor. Nevertheless let's focus on Ghana. Our recent discussions of economic woes completely seem to disregard the current ongoing Pandemic which has devastated most world economies some even facing bankruptcy. Discussions about our National Debt also seems to ignore one major factor and question. How did we get here, it wasn't overnight or through one single administration after Nkrumah but since Nkrumah all have been complicit in the blatant outrageous pilfering of the National Coffers and each administration go out of their way not to tackle the devastating effects of their previous colleagues because they themselves are about to continue that same legacy. Ghana is rich so we can afford to enjoy now and pay later. Recent videos of a communications Secretary who used to live in his in laws boys quarters now owning so much property and wealth it beggars belief, literally. All puns intended. When I was young my father use to narrate the story of a Ghana Government delegation that went to Europe to get a Government Loan. The banker listened intently to their presentation and afterwards told them, look the money you want to borrow a number of your politicians have far more than what you want to borrow from us. Why don't you go and borrow money from them. John Mahama, it is speculated, that he is currently worth USD900milion. How does a President of an African Country earn so much money, not even considering his family and the rest of the people busy pilfering from the National Coffers. Angela Merkel I am sure will not be worth that much but here we are with a President worth far more, a huge percentage of the Nation's GDP. Simple solution, investigate and seize, without delay, from after Nkrumah all government ministers and their cronies, including this Sam Jonah, all the Nation of Ghana's Children's stolen money from the international bank accounts they have been languishing in for years and I am confident that Ghana's National debt will disappear overnight. Right there is the solution to the problem. God bless you all..Amen.
@@sylviaa.8257 Hmm, my dear they are all liars and thieves. Since Nkrumah Ghana has been blessed with Leaders who are only interested in their own agenda. Mahama has stolen huge sums from the National Coffers, allegedly, yet he walks around with impunity and even state paid security. Why hasn’t the current administration charged him? The British Officials accused him of being Government official no 1 yet he is still walking around a free man. Sam Jonah should also be investigated for the same crimes against Ghana and Ghanaians. Now he is speaking up as a concerned senior citizen. The results of their corruption kills a lot of innocent Ghanaians because they take that which was meant to build schools and hospitals, provide emergency services etc. Roads and bridges, all that money is sitting in their personal accounts languishing, doing nothing. It’s back in the economies from where the monies were borrowed and the Children of Ghana are now paying for it. Concerned senior citizen my foot. Corrupt Senior Citizen YES. God will have His Revenge for the many lives lost as a direct result of their atrocities against Ghanaians. Heavenly records do not lie.
I don't know this man. and have never heard about his name before. What is he doing to lift up the poor? Does he has programs for poor children and farmers? What is he doing to help stop Chinese from destroying our forests, farms, digging, stealing our minerals, cutting down our timbers, shooting, and disabling our hard working farmers and poor Ghanaians? Talking should follow with actions.
Ohh Daddy, I can't thank you enough...hmm if the fish comes out of the water and says the crocodile has one eye why won't you believe it. Corruption❗ corruption‼️ everywhere in Ghana. Education has always been the problem and that is the least of their concern. Yes we all need to get involved and speak up 👍🏽Thank you ❣
Mr Sam your reflections are really......but Jones you have had the chance of serving Ghana in so many ways and with several ADMINISTRATIONS which you UTILISED to amass your IMMENSE riches, you never thought of INVESTING in the country which made you who you are, secondly talking about the CONSTITUTION it was written long ago why complain now, becareful people's tongue will start wrangling into your affairs and the SOURCE OF YOUR RICHES...............
Assin Kushia should be developed more to look after the Assin District if you really care about Ghana. Do you remember where you got your billions? It's Ghana money. You're part of the corrupt leaders who for your greedy sake do not wanted to even live in the country but abroad. Now you come to your senses to come out with advice. Ghana belongs to Ghana. Therefore when Ghana makes you rich you can invest in Ghana for God sake. You're my uncle from KUSHIA and I know your billions has not invested in Ghana enough. Thanks for the advice 🙏.
Thanks for your concerns but why mention covid in passing and not give us your views about the impact of covid on the economy in 2020 our health and government handling of this pandemic. I await your response.
I side with him on this but my concern is he happy anytime he visits Obuasi and when he returns to Johannesburg is he happy of the development of the province To me he alone cannot change the state of Obuasi without the then Big men in the company siding with him But honestly to me you failed Obuasi in particular
This man has lost his mind. You chopped obuasi money and went to spent it in South Africa not to open companies in ghana and now you are going to lecture who?. Make you commot for there.
Mr Jonah, What Have You done For Ghana? All the money you have made Rightfully or Wrongly You sit here speaking English like you are the only one who knows how. I beg, give back the money you took that belongs to all the people in Ghana. JJ was not after you for nothing. Remember God is Watching and he will surely ask you.
He has done a lot but you can only know today if you choose to read. Please find the book Ashanti and read. Also you can go find this publication, An Economic History of Ashanti Goldfields Corporation 1895-2004 by Ayowa Frifa Taylor, very instructive and your question will be well answered .
Most people reward thieves in Africa with praises and accolades. Sam Jonah was given a VIBRANT gold company to manage in Ghana; but at time he was leaving Ashanti Goldfields as the CEO, the company was in deep financial crisis but he (Sam Jonah) had become a billionaire - he now lives in South Africa with the all stolen money. Rawlings once described him as a GREEDY person. Sam Jonah, shout up.
This is Ghana, the winner takes ALL, NPP/NDC the same. The only democracy working here is that people go out to vote and it ends there. There has been no accountability since the time of Nkrumah and it suits the rest to tow the same line when in power. The opposition would usually make noise but as soon as they are in power they do worse than their predecessors. They cover up for each other and the nation is for the taking whilst the masses cheers them on, or forever remain partisan. Take for instance the NPP stopped locals from galamsey fine, but only for the top gov officials to use the security to join illegal ventures with the Chinese to rock our land to total destruction beyond any restoration in the next two centuries to come. Mo Ghana mo
We are really tired of the talk shop. Is he saying our leaders don't know what is happening? Anyway respectfully, what has Sir Sam Jonah done for Ghana? I want to be educated.
Its all easy to talk but at the end of the day, week, month, quarter and year still nothing has change or will change. Because the problem sit still in the mind of the people. We all know the issues, in the days of Nkrumah things we more better then now. We move forward not backwards, how come we can deliver leaders/leadership outside of the country Ghana? Kofi Anan world leader but not leader in Origin country? Why because he knows citizens doesn’t want the true and work. Our mind in Ghana is sick. First start with: 1: Summary of issues the country is haven 2: start researching for exploring why those issues are there and hasn’t being solved 3:start researching solutions for those issues. 1+1= 2 4: put iron hand in positions that are not currupt to make sure that results that is being proposals is being ✔️ well. If we cant have Ghanaian leaders to lead the country please like football look for Ghaniaan outside of the country with good Curriculum. My God enough is enough
Anyone who makes a negative comment on this assessment by Mr. Jonah is anti-Ghana. The key expressed word for all to pay attention to is FEAR. Set your partisan affiliations aside and review the content of his write-up. Ghanaians are quick to pass judgement without patiently taking sections of any composition to analyse properly as a media station did immediately after this speech came out. Take me on because this is a good write -up for a level 3 study. Sometimes I hate the fact that a majority of Ghanaians do not show maturity when it is a critical thinking topic like this one.
Don't get carried away by speeches. For so many years he was the CEO of AGC/Ashanti Gold, what did he do? Go to Obuasi and see things for yourself. He run a big company like AGC/Ashanti Gold to the ground and left Obuasi a poor place. If you know about all these things, why didn't you practice it when you had the chance? If you couldn't manage AGC, what makes you think you can rule Ghana? Talk is cheap!!!!!!!

This man paa... I grew up in Obuasi... and I remember how AGC was and my life as a kid. This man came to helm of affairs, and some decisions he made really destroyed the company. I hope he has had a change of heart, and now really want to do the best for Ghana. He should start with Obuasi where he was born and reached his full potential.
I also grew up in Obuasi and there was a lot of money around. All the workers were just enjoying without planning for their future. Don't blame anyone if you couldn't secure your future. All the miners did with their monthly wages was just spend on girls and drinks. The ones who saved and invested their money are doing well.
@@GERALDJONAH lmao... I’m living a good life. It’s all about what he could have done at the helm of affairs. Some decisions he made. And of course most Ghanaians only think about their stomach and not wealth building. I’m glad my parents built wealth. Those decisions were made by leadership when he was in charge.
Who the hell are you talking about? what the hell do you know? Shut the hell up if you cannot name one decision he took. Unfortunately. Opinions are like noses, we smell differently. Though I agree with him %100, questions are being asked about his own development projects under his judiciary as the Boss of Aglo Gold? Do u have answers?
Dangote is opening creating jobs for his because he has money, I heard of Sam jona when I was school boy at obuasi...and up till now have not seen his company employing or creating jobs for Ghanaians and you or want government to do everything, so can't you also do your part? The reason why Sam Jonah is crying foul is because he was denied a lucrative oil contract under this administration. At his age, he still wants to benefit from the state unduely.
What a good analysis though. I reckon he has to be given the opportunity to explain.
"if you're my age, and have serious concerns about the future of the next generation, it would indeed be irresponsible, not to speak up" - Sir Sam Jonah
What a a powerful statement by his excellency, Dr, Sid Sam Jonah!

During your time at Obuasi goldfields, why couldnt you turn that town into a modern city? To indeed reflect a gold hub of west Africa.

So all this talk nothing useful came out. Yeiiiii Ghana
Well Spoken Sir.

And here comes the political bulldogs..........
Mo Ghana mo
I don't like this Sam Jonah but he is making a point... We are so quick to criticised and outline problems. Let's come out with solutions.
We are really tired of the talk shop. Is he saying our leaders don't know what is happening? Anyway respectfully, what has Sir Sam Jonah done for Ghana? I want to be educated.
He wants to contest 2024 election in the ticket of ndc.
And so
🤣🤔
Its all easy to talk but at the end of the day, week, month, quarter and year still nothing has change or will change. Because the problem sit still in the mind of the people. We all know the issues, in the days of Nkrumah things we more better then now. We move forward not backwards, how come we can deliver leaders/leadership outside of the country Ghana? Kofi Anan world leader but not leader in Origin country? Why because he knows citizens doesn’t want the true and work. Our mind in Ghana is sick.
First start with:
1: Summary of issues the country is haven
2: start researching for exploring why those issues are there and hasn’t being solved
3:start researching solutions for those issues. 1+1= 2
4: put iron hand in positions that are not currupt to make sure that results that is being proposals is being ✔️ well.

I also grew up in Obuasi and there was a lot of money around. All the workers were just enjoying without planning for their future. Don't blame anyone if you couldn't secure your future.
