His revolvers are beautifully maintained and cleaned. God I miss black powder shooting. I feel that the black powder shooting community is very laid back and all for fun and for the love of history. Great video!
As a North American I love the collegial respect I see Hungarians show one another. There’s no trace of jealousy, envy, malice, Schadenfreude-just genuine, mutually-supportive sportsmanship. It’s the same in the arts; I studied music intensively for seven years with several ex-patriate Hungarians in Canada. I found unfailing positive reinforcement and extraordinarily functional technical suggestions, always. Great video.
I love how every component doesn't matter to him, like the make of the percussion caps. That's so refreshing compared to the whole "elitist" tactical world :)
🤔 I disagree.... Being a snobbish elitist about brand names is absolutely crucial for hyper accurate competitive shooting! When I shoot, I choose only the best products, such as: "Accu-Sure LXP" composite matrix balls, "Synergy Max" 16FF-3PR powder, and sperm whale ambergris for lube..... 😉👍 👉 I fire 1/16" groups from 100 yards as a result of using these elitist components.. 😁
@@maylast2557 I wasn't being serious, I was being sarcastic. I made up all of those product names in my post. It was a bad attempt at a joke, but now that I read it again, it wasn't very funny.
Very impressive. It takes a strong arm to hold that beast up and real skill to fire a group like that. Most of us would be happy to simply get all the rounds on the target. The Walker is an impressive piece when loaded with a full charge. One shot with it and you fully understand why the cavalry was so happy with it. The Walker was overwhelming firepower compared to the .36 caliber revolvers of the time. I have to wonder what the Mexicans thought when they first experienced those troops shooting horses out from under them with a handgun!
The walker is a beast, but actually very manageable. The first time I was out shooting mine, I was surprised at just how stable I could hold it. Incidentally I was also using 30gr, although just because I had the measurement tube set up like that from shooting another gun :-) Even though I'm nowhere near as big as this guy, still the walker just suits me and I recommend to everyone to try it out. It's awesome !!!!!
The Walkers tended to blow up when fired too many times on the 60 gr load. Colt later recommended that the be loaded max 50 gr. Repros don't have that problem, because of modern metallurgy.
Almost a year ago on May 24, 2021 Governor Greg Abbott signed a resolution making the 1847 Walker Colt, the official handgun of Texas. Howdy from Texas!
Well I go into the Cabelas in Budapest, pick one off the shelf that looks good, buy some powder and caps on sale and head off to the medal event. I bet his secret lube is off the clearance rack. My kind of champion. This video really has lots of good advice in it and no tuning of the Walker was needed.
Gyula shows to me that most guns shoot better than most can hold, except he holds his Walker ver well. I use both a 3rd mod Dragoon and mostly my Navy colt, and seem to be doing well against the solid frame revolvers. I appreciated his observations on what to check regarding the revolvers set up. Well done, both of you. Cheers Gordon
I am impressed both with your friend's shooting and with just how advanced this technology was for it's era. Not many pistol shooters would get that result one handed even with a polymer framed Glock. And those who know the technique can index their first three shots faster with that old single action thumb buster than Gerry Maculich can with a Glock.
Gyula is fucking impressive I mean holding a Walker one handed without shaking. For him it's just as simple as pointing a finger at the target XD. Shooting such a tight group with a huge, bulky and heavy gun without adjustable sights ... Just a notch in the Hammer; one word : RESPECT !!! I'm not even sure I could do the same at 25m two handed with a 1911 or a MK23. Hi from France, TONY
Yeah, when I tried it in the gun store it looks enormous in my hands, but in his hands it doesn't even look so big. Although there's something to the feel of it though.
I used to own a good copy of a Walker, but I never could shoot that good. I love his laid back attitude, some people just have what it takes, and all the extra hoopla doesn't effect him.
Great to see scores like this come from a gun that many 'Target' Shooters would consider to be a cowboy gun. Well done to you both for shattering that myth!
I love the Walker for it's weight, once on target it just hangs there, solid as a rock, I like them so much I have 3 of them, was there a black patch on the bottom of the target as an aim point? Congratulations on you Gold Medal Gyula, you deserve it! Many thanks for posting this, a nice relaxing video.
Shane M, I had a Walker years ago and had the same problem. I tried reworking the spring engagement with the lever, but since I wasn't concerned about authenticity, I replaced the lever with one from a Dragoon and fitted the catch to the barrel. It didn't look bad, and the lever stayed up. You could probably rework the Walker lever and put a check ball in the end but would still need a catch dovetailed into the barrel to hold it. Hope this gives you some ideas 😉
I have always used a two hand grip with my Walkers. They shoot very well. The early guns were made mostly of iron that was not that good so thats why it was made so big and heavy. Rapid improvements in steel manufacturing made the 1851 and 60 possible. I have seldom been without a Walker these past 40 years shooting black powder. I think I'm on my third or fourth one now.
It seems to vary with the gun. My first one stayed up and seldom dropped. Ive not shot my latest one so i dont know how its going to do. The old timers put i piece of string or leather thong around the end of the barrel and rammer.
@@stihlguessin210 Well technically farina is Cream of Wheat. Farina is the semolina equivalent made with soft white wheat. When it is a harder wheat like durum it would be called bulgur or semolina. Approximately. The language isn't super specific here.
I can't imagine how cap and ball revolver shooting can be fun with all the cap jams that are gong on. I wish you had ask the champion what he did to his Walker so that it shoots without jam? I observed he didn't even hold the gun up vertically to eject the spent cap after each shot. I bought the same Uberti Walker new and it has jam problem with RWS 1075.
It might have to do with the sharpness of the hammer on the replicas. Apparently the edges that strike the cap are pretty sharp. If you dull them slightly they will not stab the cap and cause a jam. The comment right below yours has another explanation that is worth looking at too.
Having difficulty breaking down a Walker Colt, specifically separating the barrel from the body of the pistol..after removing the wedge the barrel is almost impossible to detach and free up the cylinder for removal..Has anyone else experienced this and is there something that could help to alleviate this apparent binding of the barrel.. thanks in advance.
I've owned, shot and messed with dozens of black powder revolvers. Remington clones are without a doubt the stronger, more accurate action, but for day in and day out shooting, an open top Colt is, IMHO the better choice. I love how quickly you can knock a Colt apart, swab it out and keep it in action. You have to pin them and fill the hammer notch to keep an open top from grabbing nipples. But, otherwise a Colt is plenty strong, plenty accurate and very easy to clean. You can pull them completely apart, clean, repair and smooth up the lock work with relative ease as well.
Your friend is a Natural. I have a 'Goonerized' Uberti Walker with an aftermarket front sight and I would be hard pressed to do that repeatedly with two hands. Great video, thank you!
I own two Uberti Walkers and they are my favorites of all the guns I own. I love to go around guys shooting their candy ass semi autos. I pull my Walkers from under my coat then tell them to stand back because hellfire and damnation has arrived in town!

Wow, that was impressive. Good, no great shooting! You all would be fun to shoot with! Come to Idaho and we can do some shooting and a lot of it. I bet you would like to hang out in the Rockies and do some camping, fishing, ATV riding, etc as well.
Nice shooting! I own a pair of these guns. Impractical? Maybe, but they are just too fun to shoot. Hopefully the EU isn’t going to ban black powder guns. I read somewhere that this is a recent concern. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your videos.
The cap&ball Colts are "primitive" only in loading technique. In terminal ballistics and precision accuracy, a properly tuned and fitted open top Colt design will actually shoot much tighter groups than any modern auto pistol. In a famous 1865 gunfight in Springfield Missouri, Hickok precisely shot Davis Tutt thru the heart at 75 yards with an 1851 Colt Navy .36. Such a shot requires a precision accuracy that a modern 9mm auto pistol is not capable of.
I saw one in a museum yesterday. It looked to be so big and heavy that it would be very awkward to aim, especially with one hand. I thought it might feel more natural to with shoot with the loading lever under the barrel resting on a hand, but even with a glove that's dangerous due to the risk of chain fire. It looked like the size of an object one would carry with two hands in different places. Maybe a folding vertical forward grip in the middle of the gun's length would have been useful. It weighs as much as a carbine and the weight is up front not just compared to semi-autos and modern revolvers but even in comparison to many single-action revolvers. It looks as hard to handle as any modern handgun, matter how big and powerful. At the time it might have made a nice revolver carbine with a stock and a safe place in front of the cylinder to put a secondary hand, to get around the problem of original revolver rifles (which tended to endanger the forward hand).
So why did you decide to have a separate event for open top revolvers? I have fired many revolvers...I mean I live in the US after all, and I find the firing characteristics of open tops and full frames are almost identical.
For that time, this was a big breakthrough in science and technology in russia about the existence of such a pistol not anyone knew russian alcoholes at that time went in wooden shoes .

Wonderful display of functionality, historic, great shots from an old gun.
Congratulations Gyula. This shows how over engineered the Walker was and how mass can help if you can handle it. The right choice for this event.

I have problem shooting similar load with both hands :P
