This was recorded late last night after dinner and the obligatory Sunday night beers. I was experimenting with the sonic differences between my stock 2013 Johnny Marr Jaguar and 2015 US '65 RI Jazzmaster. I thought you might like to hear and see the differences too so I filmed it. Both guitars were taken for a very lazy ride through the clean and dirty channels of my 30W Class A George Evans Sonique 30A, with and without reverb and modulated delay (Eventide H9 in amp's FX loop).
The Jazzmaster has had two important mods: the addition of a Staytrem bridge and tremolo arm. Staytrem parts (by John Moore of the UK) also feature on the Johnny Marr Jag as stock. They're so good I swapped the Jazzmaster's standard Fender bridge and tremolo arm over to the Staytrem parts before I'd even tried the guitar through an amp. Yes, I'm aware of Mastery parts, I own two guitars that host their bridge and tremolo. The Mastery bridges have a different feel and tone, though (which some prefer), and I've had issues with them dropping height involuntarily. However, they're a darned side better than the original (Fender), but I still prefer the Staytrem.
Both guitars have their charms. The shorter scale Jag has a more percussive attack and a tad less sustain (hence its appeal to the surf crowd) while the Jazzmaster hangs on a little longer and has more sparkle at the bridge end and richness at the neck end. The American AVRI pickups in the Jazzmaster are great but I'll probably swap them out for Kinman Fatmasters which are noiseless, slightly hotter, and a little tamer in the top-end department. Expect that A/B demo later as well.

That Johnny Marr is one of the best things Fender had done in a long, long time.
They had the sense to listen to the critiques and wisdom of a longtime user of their products. It was a cash grab, but a thoughtful and well-executed one.
@@Updog89 I think that makes it not a cash grab. Cash grabs aren;t thoughtfully modified creations, meticulously designed over a long period of time. It would've been a cash grab to just slap JM's name on a 62 AVRI.
Prefer the creaminess, smoothness of the Jazzmaster, yet it can do everything the Jag can do.
@@Updog89 Fender is a business not a charity. They exist to make profits thereby creating jobs.
4 years later + still watching this one for its great tones.
The clean tunes on the Jazzmaster are just heavenly.
Nice to hear someone who can actually play (and something interesting at that!!) compare these two guitars
Nice touch btw
I love the Johnny Marr Signature Jaguar, but the Jazzmaster just had me from the get-go. Those were some fabulous sounds you got out of it!
I came for the comparison, I stayed because of the music. Great stuff!
I never understood the Jaguar until this video. Hats off, and thank you
Love Johnny Marr and his signature jag, but I have to say that jazzmaster sounds absolutely incredible.
Personally I preferred the JM Jag, but that 1x12 George Evans Sonique 30A combo steals the show and is by far, my favourite...!! Fabulous Brett... :)
I have both of these, and the Staytrem bridge on the Jazz, too. Nice to hear someone playing them back to back, so well...
Impeccable playing as always. And an impressive array of tones from the instrument - thank you for demonstrating them and showing what a Johnny Marr Jag can do.
Both fantatsic, but the Jaguar wins by a nose for my own taste.. Gorgeous.
Middle position on a Jazzmaster is just heaven for me.
Totally agree
Any of the 4 foundational Fenders work for me (Stratocaster, Telecaster, Jazzmaster & Jaguar)- Jazzmaster usually is my choice over a Jaguar... but the Johnny Marr Jaguar is, head & shoulders my fave Jag ever. Here's both are wonderful...
Some personal Jazzmaster choices- All Mastery for me, both bridge & tremolo unit...and most importantly Seymour Duncan Antiquity (or Antiquity I as they are sometimes called) pickups. They are based on the earliest Jazzmaster pickups from the late 50's & earliest 60's. Nels Cline is the person I first heard singing their praises & no one has a better Jazzmaster tone than him, to my ears. I have a Strat & Tele, so I wanted something as different as possible with my Jazzmaster. Those Duncan Antiquity pickups are darker, creamier & thicker than the typical more mid-60's sound (Antiquity II's have that- more twang, jangle & brightness), but they still have plenty of those Fender single coil trademark attributes... the Johnny Marr Jaguar veers more towards that middle ground too...
7:52 - ...and I saved the very best tone for the last few chords. :-D Great demo - thank you! My American Professional Jag will be here in a few days. Can't wait!
I like them both in their own way.
I love the look and feel of the Jaguar...but the Jazzmaster tone is just the best... especially the middle position !
I love your playing style man! You've got some great stuff in there, and beautiful guitars and tone. Keep it up!
Sick playing throughout, and very appreciated
Your tone....absolutely perfect in this video
FANTASTIC playing!!
You really make this guitars come alive. o man good stuff! love it
As much as I want to prefer the Jaguar, the Jazzmaster is better suited for my needs. The full scale neck, the simpler schematics, and a pickups that differ more in tone from a strat, which is already my main guitar.
I absolutely love Jags and Jazzmasters. You sir are a wonderful player. THANKS for posting.
Listening through good quality headphones and then through good quality stereo speakers: the Jazzmaster sounds way more jangly than the jaguar, which just sounds thin imho. I'm quite surprised.
i agree and i'm bummed about it. i went into this video almost certain that my next guitar would be the johnny marr jag, but the jazzmaster's tone absolutely crushes the jag's.
The simple fact is that the Jazzmaster has the most underrated single coils out there...they're amazing...growly in the bridge, jazzy in the neck and the mid position bests positions 2 and 4 on a Strat...for me, it's the best sounding Fender...
Damn Kingman, you broke my heart with that playing!
Excellent. Went back to the beginning. And again.
This video is absolutely brilliant, thanks for posting!
I have both of these guitars. Your a man of good taste! Both sound and play brilliantly. I find fenders fit a band better and allow more space for the other members.
This is exactly the video I was looking for. Thanks!
The sound is incredible !!!! Both of this guitars are awesome but jazzmaster got a little something more to my ears !!!!!!!!
Excellent comparison vid Brett, the JM sounds perfect but the JM Jag sounds excellent too!
sick demo all props to you Brett Kingman
That great, lazy guitaring was great, but completely upstaged by the thumbs up and facial expression at the end. Haha. 🤣
Loved this demo. Cheers Brett.
The Staytrem bridge completely transformed my Classic Player Jag from unplayable to a main axe in one simple and swift move (installed without removing the strings and luckily the intonation was spot on). Now I can't put down my PRS S2 Standard 22, but that's me going off on a tangent. Great video as always Burgs, thank you for all the inspiration and information.
bluetomatorecords Hey, no probs. It was shot on a whim and I probably should have laid off the brews beforehand, but you know, we only live once..! The Staytrem: Yes, my thoughts exactly. I couldn't believe it when I went to adjust the intonation. It was absolutely spot on! That is sheer class and almost unparalled service as far as I'm concerned. And for the record, I pay full price like everyone else. Have a great day, BTR!
Awesome video, Burgs. I have a soft sport for offsets. Despite their issues, those floating trems are my favourite system of them all. Both guitars sounded amazing. I shall have to check Staytrem out.
Superb chops and sounds!
Both amazing. I like the unique character of the JM Jag a lot. This Jazzmaster does sound stunning too though. Great playing!
I'd take the Johnny Marr Jag personally but both sound fantastic.
Have to say I am liking the sound of the Jag better. Playing was a good lesson in itself. Thanks.
Johnny Marr your new jazzmaster is right here this has to be the best sounding Jazzmaster demo period this guitar ticks all the boxes sure the Jaguar is fine but the Jazzmaster kicks it out the park....
Hard one this two beautiful sounding guitars great demo to ..love your playing that’s so refreshing to ..Jazz master sounds looks go gorgeous..jag is to ..Have to play them both I think .50/50 for now ??.
Jazzmaster all the way.
That tone...
The sound brinks me tranquility!!!
Only two minutes in and I’m already thinking of buying a jag!
came here for the comparison, stayed for the nice playing. (and tone)
Nothing picks up effects better than a jaguar or a jazzmaster.
My pick is the Jazzmaster.
Jazzmaster for me, just wished they would all come with block inlays and matching headstocks ! (And no shitty bridges)
Dude yes! Block inlays on offsets are the most beautiful things.
I ended up buying a Strat recently instead of a jag/jazz.... I'll get one eventually but Starts can do everything and mines is Seafoam Green with a matching headstock.
PaseoDeLaEstrella I ended up finally getting a JM (60th Anniversary model with the block inlays and matching headstock! Fiesta Red)
I will say it sounds and looks amazing however I was hit with usual shit bridge and trem. Bought a Mastery bridge and a another Fender replacement trem with the locking nut. Dropping it off at the luthier to fix up today.
In all honesty, If I get a Jag then I’d buy a Squier (amazing guitars) and just do it all up for half the price. So many people have issues with them regardless of the price tag.
I love the effects
Playing is killer as always
I agree with God, down below my comment. The J Marr sounds amazing. The pickups are the key to a good Jaguar.
wonderful sound !
I'm only halfway through watching, but I just have to say you get some great tones out of that Marr.
Jaguars have these distinct bassy sound that I really love
Wait, Jags? Bassy???
haha. most jags are the opposite I feel, however the Marr Jag forsure has a nice deep bass to it, one of the best jags in my opinion
Marr is great but the Jazz is king.
I saw the Jonny Marr Jaguar in a record shop recently hanging on the wall. I played it and the gave it a once over. There were “mistakes” all over it. Too much sealing liquid that had gathered and bled at the nut. Metal units not seated properly. I asked the question to the guy working for the shop “So, they’re production line guitars and this is what you get for this much money?” He said yes, that’s exactly it.
Great demo!! Own both of the same guitars! Like the Jag better personally!
Different monsters. I like them both.
Frick'n awesome ...your style suits these well imo - luv the Staytrem stuff as well - Mastery's nice but look like the bottom of Granpa's toolbox (meant on every level). Also here stateside, the Marr Jag's come stock w/ a crummy Staytrem copy not the real thing which makes string spacing too wide where both E's fall off fingerboard. Hard to beat Bareknuckle p/ups on Jag ... good call on potential swap-out for JM. Thanks for sharing ~
the Jazzmaster wins for me. it’s got that heavenly neck pick up which sounds outstanding for cleans.
great demo...both very good i wouldnt be dissappointed with either.....they both combine stratty and telecaster tones... with classic fender rattle an twang.... defo my next purchase the trem looks 100x better than a strat wi no poxy irritating middle pup......
there both good.
but I believe the
Jazzmaster gets my vote.
how easy are they to play ?
and how much difference is there Bret in the bodies of them if you could tell me Bret ?
GREAT VIDEO.
JAZZMASTER SOUND LIKE HEAVEN.
How would you say the jazzmaster differs to a stratocaster sound wise? Loved the comparison.
strat is throatier and crisper, the jazzmaster is thick but glassy (in the best way of course) and Jazzmaster pickups are said to be some of the best to be paired with all Pedal types

What Color Man?
Both sound amazing, great playing helps :) Jaguar for me though.
Ah, to be surrounded by the best amps on earth!
2 essential axes.... no studio should be without them.
The Johnny Marr one
I like the look of the Jag and Jazzmaster but can't get behind the trem and switches.
Getting on at Bleeker Street, Brett? Love the demos.
Perfect playing, just how a jag and a jazz is supposed to sound...
The Jag is more Jangly for the clean stuff and the Jazz sounds better w a little dirt. predictable IMO. But I like them both.
I have the marr jag but hell that's a tight you. Both beautiful
Hi Brett--I enjoy all your videos!! Thank you for sharing.
I have a chance to buy a Laney VH100R with 412 speaker--this amp seems to be your favorite play through. What are your thoughts as to why you use it more than other set ups.
Great playing and awesome axes! I have RI 65 jazzmaster too, and, in my opinion, the pickups are a little bit bright; so, I always keep the tone knob half the way. The J. Marr jaguar is simply heaven... love it. I'm gonna buy a jaguar road worn CAR. What do you think about it?
Hi! I used to play on Squier AV Jazzmaster, and recently i boughy Johonny Marr Jaguar. After while I keep going back to my squier cause the jaguar doesn't have that amazing "twang" on thicker strings... I saw you had Jaguar with Lollar pick-ups. As I was listening I thought they sound a little bit more like jazzmaster, what do you think? I'm not sure what to do, try to find a real jazzmaster what will be really difficult, or try to mod the jaguar...
Karol - can you tell me more about Bretts Jaguar with Lollar pickups? We’re they jaguar or P90’s pickups ?
@@whodunitpros8555 Its funny to see my post from 4 years ago :D To be honest I don't remember, Brett had some video with jag & lollar. Finally I stick to standard johnny marr picups and got used to it, now I love it :D But new jazzmaster is on a way, both guitars are so different, when you can't decide its best to get both.
both, they both do different things imo
that is one sweet sounding guitar 🎸 👍
Hey Brett, looking at replacing the bridge my Jazzmaster J Mascis. I looked into Staytrem after you mentioned them but they no longer ship outside of the UK. Any suggestion on an alternative?
Mastery would be the first alternative, Terry. Or a Mustang bridge (which is what the Staytrem is largely modelled on). All the best!
Tbh the '65 RI Jazzmaster has a more pleasing tone but I'd prefer a Jaguar neck on that guitar.
How do the necks compare? I currently have an AV 65 Jazzmaster...thinking about trading it for a J Marr. The Jazzmaster neck is bit too fat for my liking. Your input is greatly appreciated.
strange, this jaguar sound rounder and fuller than the jazzmaster.
Hello
Would you be kind and tell my the 1965 JazzMaster’s neck thickness?
Recalling Still In Love With You by Thin Lizzy...
@ 5:00 min on this video, the sound !!!, man I would love to be able to duplicate that...
I want the JMJ, but if I've already got a nice 59 reissue Strat do I need it? Different enough?
Craig Campbell of course! The guitar is the argument. If you want one, find one!
Jaguar wins
excellent tone and better playing.
Love jags jazzmasters. What is the best pots for this guitars? 1m 250k?
How offsets are supposed to be played
I thought the '65 Jazzmaster would have block inlays instead of dots, which the Jazzmasters 'till '64 have.
Blocks didn't come in until 66.
oh that great sound.................
sweet
1:06 “show me howwww” only og’s know
Jaguar bridge and Jazzmaster neck. I was more impressed with the playing though.
The Jazz master has a cleaner tone, it sounds like
Somebody likes Laney
for some reason I always hear and see jags as telecasters with a better body shape and a tremolo. maybe thats just me though--i just dont really see what makes them so special.
Have you ever played one? Neither sound like a telecaster, especially the Jazzmaster, with its fatter, more rounded sounding sounding pickups. The middle position is one of the most unique tones you'll hear.
That shit was MAD filthy!!!!
