What I really love about this channel is that it really feels like it coming from an actual person who's putting effort into it. This video in particular doesn't feel like a by committee list of ideas, rather just a guy like "Hey here's what I'm finding is working for me, try it out." I find that approach way more relatable and valuable that way.
    Awesome job man!

PLEASE DO A VIDEO ON PHYSICAL MEDIA RESURGENCE! It's already incredible the amount of weight that it gets lifted when you start going analogue for many things. I remember years ago I wrote out an entire novelette-length worth of a story in a notebook and realized how much more focused I was with it rather than typing it on the computer. The best part is that I didn't lose the draft when my hard drive from that time died on me.
Also, I'm doing tip number 1 to force myself to learn a new language now.

For instance, watching a show with your target language's dub instead of its original language (if it isn't originally in your target language).

Yes, I'd love it! I've been thinking for a while to pull up my old mp3 player to avoid having my phone in my hand all the time and still listening to music (also with more intentionality). i love love love this video, it's so intelligent and should be required watching for anyone using technology right now. I'm slowly getting better, but one of the biggest barriers for me is that a lot of that content that challenges and inspires me is in amongst apps like instagram and tiktok, and that makes it even harder to limit my time on those apps. recently, as a way to both consume that good stuff on tiktok specifically rather than just doomscrolling the fyp, i've been scrolling through my saved videos, which - for the most part - removes that instant dopamine hit because i've already seen it, and allows me to just consume content i know is helpful? but yeah, long journey and all that.

I'm not one to collect vinyl quite like a couple of my friends, but I'd never really considered buying myself a separate camera before. Now I'm awash with thoughts of taking pictures of my cats. Cleaning my house so it's presentable and photo-worthy (especially for cooking/baking photos). Going out hiking and taking pictures of the fall colors, now that they're starting to come out. Makes me wonder what else I haven't thought of.

I find that staying informed could also be done by reading the local newspaper (the physical one) and to make a bit of a ritual out of it (I usually have my morning coffe with the newspaper). At least where I live, the newspaper covers local issues and local plans in a way that makes it easy to stay informed of what is happening in your city or community. It's also a good way to find topics for those breaks at work where you don't know the person that you sit down with too well. It also centers my worldview a bit to the local area and to the present day most of the time.

Centring your local area is so key. Lots of people around me can give a play by play of current American politics but don't even know we have our own election coming up. How can you feel part of a community if you don't know what's happening around you!

Switching to analog is amazing. I got into fountain pens a few years ago. Aside from enjoying the tactile experience of writing with an great pen, the beauty of the functional art some of these companies sell, in the form of both pen and ink options, can be mind blowing.
Pairing pens with excellent paper has led me to love using paper planners again -- though not exclusively for planning. For the past couple of years, I've been getting an A5 size Hobonichi for journaling and brain dumping, and a Hobonichi Weeks Mega as a reading tracker and commonplace book. Great way to engage my brain, stay curious, use my pens, and avoid mindless tech.

One game changer for me was turning off RUclips recommendations, and this works across all of my devices. Shorts are not an option unless I actively seek a specific one and even then it doesn't let me scroll beyond 3 shorts. I cannot tell you how often I have come onto RUclips to kill time, realized that none of my subscriptions have posted anything since an hour ago, and moved on to do better things. Really makes you actively seek content rather than watching the first bit of content that appears on the screen.

REAL ^^ i’d like to add onto this: i’ve had my reccs off across my devices since last year and my time on youtube has dropped so much
an iphone app i highly recommend for doing this is called youtube untrap :0 it only works on safari youtube tho, not the app, so be wary of that. but i prefer it like this anyways because the website’s ui is less addicting and a bit more clunky so i naturally use it less
it feels so much more intentional too cause now i mainly check my curated subscriptions and search for things i wanna see now, not something fed to me

Being equally blessed and cursed with anhedonia, don't get that endorphin hit from anything. Cut down my RUclips list the other days as I just wasn't watching 'content'. When it comes to social media, FB is tedious memes and ads, Reddit has the same tedious gubbins that turns me off.
On that note, there are the days of desperation in the hope of something interesting.
Thanks for adding productive and positive joy into the world, always love me some joy in this crazy realm. Heh, love your creative suggestion at the end, reminds me of a video I was watching the other day regarding putting more of yourself into the world instead of just consuming what others create.
Lots of good info, especially the replacement therapy gubbins. Really need to do more of that.

    • @miss_whipps
      @miss_whipps 2 дня назад

I rarely hear people talk about anhedonia! I think you could educate and be relatable to A LOT of others if you share about your condition. Many, many people experience anhedonia as a symptom of PAWS (post acute withdrawal syndrome) when they get sober, especially from opiates. It's so disheartening to find that one of the byproducts of doing something incredibly positive and imperative for your well-being is that you are unable to feel the joy one would imagine such a huge accomplishment would provide.
Thank you for sharing, and wishing you all the best.

Then I feel bad at the end of the day because I got nothing done and am still in the negative mental state. one of the reasons i think we're just now trying to turn our online consumption around is cause we're seeing how bad it is becoming for the youth (gen alpha). none of us are really made for it

For youtube, I created playlists dedicated to specific interests, so that i can compartmentalize instead of being distracted by random topics that dont serve me. Example, i have a playlist called "self help" and another called "body" for exercise and health info. It really helped my adhd brain. Its so easy to get distracted.

Love this! I’ve been doing far less doomscrolling lately anyway but this video has ended my bout for today. I’m now off to read the new National Geographic that I’d been wanting to read. Thanks! And yes - a video on physical media would be great!!

Something that helped for me was to fully delete almost all my social media accounts. That way I wouldn't be tempted to reinstall them because I'd have to create a brand new account. Has done wonders for improving my mindset.

i really like "replacement over removal" because it's more sustainable. this video really put it into perspective about how i want to be more intentional with my phone and social media. i'm not removing them but rather healthily rebuilding my relationship from the ground up

Anna Lembke talked about how our brains have a homeostasis response that tries to balance pain and pleasure. We are mucking that up by constantly seeking out pleasure and novelty. We need some suffering and pain to be well. We can seek it out in healthy ways like exercise, reasonable fasting, cold water exposure, and meditation. Stillness can be quite miserable to the monkey mind, but it needs ongoing taming or it will grow strong and run the show. We need boredom and discomfort in order to be able to feel novelty and pleasure.

YES! Thank you for showing me dearrow! I can't stand those clickbait thumbnails, I know people sometimes put time into them but I just see it and set the channel to not recommend.
Also replacement is the way I need to draw out how to replace my vices.

Cam thank you once again for your amazing insight and advice! I’ve been recently trying to spend less time on my phone because I just feel like I live in a constant loop, of work, cook, clean, scroll etc. not fun, I’m trying to spend more time doing my art when I’m not at work. So this is great, and I just really really appreciate these videos! Thank you! 🥰

My biggest pitfall is what you call the comfort vortex - and I usually fall into that when I have no mental and physical energy left and I just need to lie on the sofa and do nothing, even reading a book or watching a film would be too demanding at that point. I suppose what I need then is to somehow get transported into a forest or to the seaside to have a nap in an outside setting, maybe that would help xD
