It wasn’t too bad- we made the finals in SL- most other seasons we weren’t making the finals in the ARL or NRL. The worst thing was the World Club Challenge where we won every game but under the tournament rules didn’t make the quarters!

Super League is kind of remembered as a rebellion and a bad thing. But it brought the game forward 10 years. It had so many innovations while the ARL struggled. Yet the Super League is remembered as the other competition
Should have called it the NRL with Super League being one division and the ARL being another division, after the season the top teams from both brands move onto the finals. Would have been great.
Would have been a perfect opportunity to have a 2 conference league system for expanding to 24 teams for modern times. ARL conference and super league conference of 12 teams each.
1997 was indeed a year of both divisions and damage but through it all it produced the best grand final that bought the league back united. With only 12 teams in the comp that year the Newcastle Knights loyalty won it all in 1997.🥇🏆🏉

Whichever network did the editing of the video back then cocked Up because Perth played Bradford at Odsal not in London. Just goes to show you how thick that network editor can be. The commentators can’t pronounce some of the English clubs properly let alone some of the players names.
Have to laugh at the desperation of the Super League attempts to constantly try and sell their 'product'. "The game is faster now", "with this first game done we can get on with taking the game to the world", and Laurie Daley's comment at the end of the SL Anzac Test "I've been beaten by them before but um, this game seemed have extra intensity in it"... so laughable. Fellas, you only pulled on different (terrible) jerseys with an "S" on it and kicked off after scoring - it's not like anything changed dramatically.

Well after super league war we went from 14 arl teams and 10 super league teams to first 16 teams and then to 14. Arl wanted to be a national thing but keep all the Sydney teams. Super league wanted to be a national league and get rid of the poor clubs. Well Souths went, norths went. Illawarra, wests, Balmain and even the sea eagles for a while. The arl wanted Sunday afternoon grand finals the super league wanted night time grand finals. Super league wanted pay tv rights and the arl never even considered them, now we have fox league. Basically the nrl is the super league business model run by arl people. On the field it’s about as decisive as it gets long term for super league. Although arl won the year origin is better than tri series. The arl grand final was better than the super league one. But in a long term picture Super league champions were the minor and major premiers in 1998 as well as facing off with another super league team in the final. The super league runners up were minor premiers in 1999. The 1999 premiers were Melbourne a team built out of defunct super league teams and run by John ribot and Chris Johns who were super league. Then in 2000 the super league champions were major and minor premiers again. Then finally in 2001 the arl champions won the comp and the arl team won the minor premiership. To me super league won the war. Arl won the battle though.

Mike9103 luckily it the 97 version was never retained as it favoured the ARL teams. Especially with all the refereeing that would have went on.

Theres an asterisk on the knights being "premiers" for 1997. Super league by far had the better teams and players.
