Possibly, but probably not. I flew the B1 Lancer. The plane is designed to drop from 25,000 feet to 500 feet in just under one minute with the wings swept back and point the nose 20° down. It’s really not that hard on you traveling downward. If you’re traveling too fast in a climb it sucks your blood down away from your brain.

For those who are interested, the first officer of the flight has accumulated over 30,000 hours on the flight deck and is considered one of the most experienced pilot of China Eastern Airlines (Edit: and he IS qualified as a captain and flight instructor. It's just on that specific flight he is in the right seat). All three pilots (including a second officer) were reportedly to be in good health and mental conditions, experiencing no upsets in their life. (Edit2: The captain and second officer that day have 6,709 hours and 556 hours respectively. The second officer was flying as an observer. Just some more info that might be helpful.)
The only thing we can currently say for sure about this tragedy is probably that there is no easy answer, and too much speculation is probably of no great help at this point. The CVR has been recovered and flown to Beijing overnight yesterday, and hopefully we can get an answer as soon as possible. May the passengers and crew rest in peace.
(Update: On 27th Mar, 7th day of the crash, the FDR has been recovered and is on its way to Beijing. Images show that it seems to be overall intact and in a better state than the CVR. All victims have been identified, confirming there are no survivors. )

When I was a private pilot many decades ago getting my commercial rating, one of my instructors told me, “If you fly long enough you will have an emergency or emergencies. While in the Air Force we had two emergencies which caused us to feather one of the engines on a C-130 E in both cases. No big deal though. We landed safely at the closest airport available for the C-130.
But in my civilian flying I have lost the only engine on the aircraft twice. On the first one I glided to an airport from an elevation of 8,000 feet and landed safely. The other one I lost the engine at 1,200 feet and chose to land on a dirt road in a cane field. I had to make a strep 60 to 70 degree diving right turn to get down quickly. When I leveled my bank and slowed the decent I was lined up with the road where I wanted to be. As planed, I still had a high airspeed, about 45 to 50 MPH over stall speed, but there was a truck in the way that I did not see before.
So I was forced to go to plan B. I changed fuel tanks and the engine started at around 80 MPH with 200 feet showing on the altimeter about 150 to 160 AGL, above ground level. So I leveled out and as my airspeed began to rise I pulled up to start climbing out. I heard a loud bang like a bird strike coming up from the sugar cane. I went to the closest airport which was my home airport.
When I pulled up to the fuel pump to refuel and had the engine back to idle I could see green stripes on the back of the prop. They turned out to be the zinc cremate primer under the paint. When I got out of the cockpit and stepped on the step there was about 25 to 30 feet of half inch aluminum cable dangling from it.
The loud bang was not a bird strike. I had flown through a bunch of wires. In fact it was 8 or 10 small wires about 1/8 of an inch and two half inch aluminum cables. If the prop would not have cut the cables they would have cut through the windshield and me. In the remarks section I wrote in red, “Down payment on the farm.” That was my closest call to disaster. The damage to the aircraft was around $7,000.

The 737-800 has a adjustable horizontal stabilizer operated by a jack screw, and the elevators are installed on said horizontal stabilizer. If there was a problem with the jack screw, and the horizontal stabilizer got stuck in a negative attitude, even full elevator control would not help.
Due to the impact speed of the crash, it's unlikely the black boxes survived, so we'll never know why the aircraft was initially able to recover from a dive, but then go into an unrecoverable dive.

Hi, I watch your channel frequently. Here is my view on the recent China Eastern accident. Compare the flight profile of China Eastern with that of SilkAir that ended the same way on Dec 19, 1997 on a short flight from Jakarta to Singapore. The SilkAir B737 left flight level 35,000 ft in a nose down attitude and impacted into the Musi River and disintegrated. No survivors. Investigators concluded the only possible way to achieve the nose down flight profile was with manual input from the cockpit but even that was extremely difficult to maintain in the simulator. A portion of the starboard wing on the SilkAir aircraft broke away on the rapid dive due to high stress levels. Witnesses on the ground heard the wing break away as a loud boom and it was located some 2 kilometres from the main impact site. Pilot suicide was the most likely cause determined by the NTSB and FAA in the final accident report although Singapore and Indonesian authorities have not accepted this as the official cause. Sadly, I believe it will unfortunately be determined this was the cause of the China Eastern accident. The manufactures have not yet commented on the accident. The Chinese authorities are leading the investigation and providing regular updates but I am not confident they will disclose data that indicates the true scenario. BTW, I lost a close colleague on the SilkAir flight and have studied the accident thoroughly over the years.

Have some respect for the families of those pilots. There should be no speculations until a full and thorough investigation has been completed. Boeing and aviation experts were quick to blame pilot error/suicide for both crashes involving the 737-Max, until investigators found evidence pinpointing the MCAS issue as the cause of those two crashes. The two blackboxes of the China Eastern accident have now been found, and over 33,000 pieces of debris to sift through. All speculations should be trashed until the investigators have gone through the data/evidence in front of them for a full and final determination.

Some troubling details were left out of this video. Here are the two most bothersome:
    1. ATC tried numerous times to contact the pilot and there was no answer. Some other planes in the area also tried to contact the pilot by relaying the ATC calls without success. There were no Mayday calls.
    2. Most planes that go out of control do not "fly" in a straight down nose dive. It appears someone (pilot, FO, or a high jacker) was intentionally flying the plane straight down like a lawn dart. Planes out of control and falling out of the sky don't configure like that.
These observations suggest a murder/suicide event like the Malaysian plane intentionally ditched into the Indian Ocean. The black boxes should help in making a determination as to the exact cause of this accident. I believe the reason a pilot would commit a suicide/mass murder is to try to make his own suicide look like an airplane accident. Peace.

As others mentioned, the plane regained a little altitude after initially plunging about 22,000 feet, then went vertical again and never recovered. Also, the video states the aircraft's registration number was B-1791 (correct info), but the aircraft in the video clearly shows a registration number of B-1515. *On May 17, 2022, new reports had emerged, saying that China Eastern Airlines Flight 5735 was intentionally crashed by the flight crew or a passenger.*
Early reports of the aircraft's flight data recorder are pointing towards a deliberate crash from the cockpit. Flight controls were pushed to put the plane into a dive. This leads the investigation towards the pilot or the possibility of a cockpit breach. China Eastern noted the unlikeliness of anyone breaching the cockpit, as an emergency code was not broadcast. Chinese authorities are not pointing to issues regarding mechanical or flight control problems.
On 17 May, The Wall Street Journal reported a source from the US government, from officials involved in the investigation, as saying that the plane had been intentionally crashed, based on an analysis of data from the aircraft recorders. News reports published by ABC News on the same day concurred with the Wall Street Journal's report of the investigating officials in the US government declaring that the aircraft had been deliberately put into a vertical dive by a person on the flight deck, also citing flight recorder data showing that the landing gear and flaps had evidently not been engaged or deployed during the aircraft's descent which would indicate the pilots attempting an emergency descent or landing. The ABC News' reports had detailed that U.S. officials had investigated the personal life of one the pilots of the flight crew, stating that the pilot may have been dealing with undisclosed personal issues before the crash.
Multiple reports also mentioned that in the moments just before and during the descent, there were no distress or mayday calls from the cockpit to air traffic control nor any answers to the attempts from air traffic control and nearby aircraft to make contact with the aircraft.

There has been a lot of conflicting stories about this crash. I seen one saying it dived leveled out went to climb again then went back into a very steep dive and crashed. Another said when the nose dive happened the plane was at dang near full throttle. They where also thinking that this might of been deliberate, suicide by the pilot or maybe a medical emergency, but that is near impossible because the co-pilot would of taken over. Who knows and we may never know what actually happened. Apparently they found one of the flight recorders, but according to China is was in extremely bad shape and they weren’t sure if it was the data recorder or the voice recorder. We all know Chinas reputation when it comes to their government. That’s why I say we may never know the actual truth. This was a sad situation for all souls on board. Also there is a really good documentary on Netflix about the 737max, definitely worth a watch.
Edit: After reading a recent article, it said the black box that was found yesterday was the voice recorder, but was heavily damaged and they have started analyzing what’s on it. Search for the data recorder has intensified. They also found a part of the plane 5 miles or so from the wreckage in a farm field.

It’s difficult to have a pilot deliberately crash the plane these days unless the crew broke protocol, in which case numerous people are to blame.
