J.S. Bach "Little" Fugue in G minor, BWV 578 (harpsichord)

  • Bach's well known "little" fugue, BWV 578, for organ, played on Italian Pierluigi harpsichord (sampled by realsamples - Ed. Beurmann, meantone tuning at 383 Hz).
Some parts of the piece had to be transposed for playing it on one manual (8' register), but care was taken to retain the spirit of the original.
Please enjoy the sonorous warm and deep tone!

This music is so well crafted, it follows structure, logical chaining of chord progressions, logical sequences, logical cadences.
Everything along a very playful melody that carries the whole fugue. It all produces an incredibly satisfactory feeling to the ear, a sense of beauty that only this sounds can awake.
Now consider this, all the theory in music based on mathematical proportions and intervals. It’s absolutely incredible.
People think this is old music are ignorants, this is transcendental music!

Listen to CPE Bach then. I think he represents an exquisite transition between JS Bach and the classical period, and you can even hear his influence on classical composers like Haydn.

Yes, normally the piece is played higher. The gravity here is due to the 383 Hz tuning of the Pierluigi harpsichord (see description). Some notes had to be adjusted/transposed due to the smaller range of the instrument (e.g., instead of the octave jumps in the 27th bar at 1:35, I just played repetitions on the same pitch, eflat and d, respectively, in the fourth voice).

    • @jimbo2629
      @jimbo2629 2 года назад +4

Plenty of harpsichord were built to play at lower than more modern pitches. I much prefer the lower pitches for their resonance. The tone of this instrument is a bit thin.

at first I thought the harpsichord was out of tune, then I remembered Baroque tuning. Sounds so strange we are so used to just temperament.

Bach improvised MOST of the time he wasn't 'busy' with his assignments and paid commissions. He only wrote down a portion of what he played. He must have played a lot of music - and almost all the time. Now consider this: he had twenty children ! He didn't simply "father and forget 'em" he taught many of them music; how to play MULTIPLE instruments, how to compose (gets complicated writing for different instruments) and how to conduct orchestras and choruses.
He was NOT considered even a minor composer-of-note in his day - popular and widely held opinion of his compositions was that he was old fashioned and basically stuck in a 'has-been' style no one was interested in any longer. He was however, considered a master organist and people came from far and wide to hear him play. He was also an accomplished violinist. Time management anyone ?

You forgot a very important detail. He attributed everything to God! “Soli Deo Gloria” he often wrote in his manuscript, which translates to “All the glory to God”.
He didn’t consider himself to be better than anyone but a humble servant of the Lord.
Also, how can God’s music ever become old fashioned?

Yes, the meantone tuning sounds a bit weird. Especially in the bass at 2:49 ;) The Pierluigi harpsichord is certainly not the most suitable instrument for baroque music; the original instrument was built in 1579, so I would say renaissance music played on it sounds much better.
This piece was not played on the original instrument (it is in the collection of historical key instruments of Andreas Beurmann), but I used the official realsamples library.with a Yamaha Clavinova.

Unfortunately I don't have more Bach works here on RUclips yet, but a recording of the Italian Concerto sounds like a good idea (although the 3rd movement will be very hard for me...). I have to check if the Pierluigi harpsichord fits to it (because of the meantone tuning).

Without showing the hands of the performer playing, you can easily say the piece was reproduced using a computer simulation (can be transposed easily into another key). Showing just the picture of a harpsichord without the performer, whoever recorded and uploaded the video may be posting someone else's performance.
The original is supposed to be in G minor. Today, most people who play Baroque music including Bach, Handel, Telemann & Vivaldi tend to tune their instruments at A=415Hz (half a pitch lower than the standard A=440Hz) sounding like an F#. Here the tuning is 1 tone lower than the standard pitch turning a G into an F.

During the Baroque, there were several tunings, for example in England was used 422Hz (with influence of Haendel), already in Portugal was used 408-410Hz (vine of the renaissance that tuning) Italy used the 415Hz like France and Germany. But it has a chority in Germany, only a region within Saxony from Lepzig to Dresden, used at 415'50Hz considered the most beautiful tuning of all and all time, or is still considered today. Do you know who discovered that tuning? The Bach! :D
