That Yost was pristine and you did a great job of not over restoring it. That is exactly how I wanna buy a vise......no bondo, no paint.....just an honest vise with no secrets. Great job!
Yes I'm pretty proud of that one. I don't find them that size in my area at all. I prefer natural metal over anything painted. I try not to buy a painted vise at all because you don't know what dirty secrets they are hiding. thank you.
I love your unique commentary. I don’t know much about tools and restoration but now you’re the teacher… And a great one at that! Thank you so much for the shoutout. Being your teacher was one of the highlights of my teaching career!
Hi George... I enjoy your content both with the restorations and your flea market hauls. my name is Bruce, and I am from Keene, New Hampshire. I used to have family that lived near your area. They were in Ewing Township. My aunt used to live just off of the intersections of Olden Ave. and Pennington Rd. As a kid I used to go down there during the summer months to visit. Such a small world it seems like. You keep doing what you do, and I will do my part and keep watching. Thanks.
Hey Bruce thanks for watching I really appreciate it! That's awesome I know exactly where that intersection is! What a small world indeed. Thanks again for the kind words.
Everything's beautiful about this one !!the jaws are exceptional ! Sorry but the pretty warm ah ye woo ha moment made me laugh , only from having done it myself . Test one bit burn yourself on the other. Lovely outcome !
thanks, I know I was amazed by how good of shape this was in. Laugh away, if anyone says they've never done it they are lying. If you got a minute check out my draw knife video.
Hi George, Since you asked : I live in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada which is across the river from Ottawa, Ontario (the Nation's Capital). When I discovered that you were a hockey fan, that made you part Canadian...lol. You should remember when Eric Lindros crossed center ice, admiring the puck on his stick and Scott Stevens greeted him with a clean check. I don't like seeing anyone get hurt and Stevens was just protecting his end of the ice. Take care. Roland
Hey Roland, Yes I do remember that! True you don't want to see anyone hurt, but Lindros and everyone else should have known to keep their head up when they got on the ice with Stevens, He was a one man wrecking crew and all his hits were clean for the time, it wouldn't be with today's rules, I met him once and shook his hand, I thought I had big hands but his swallowed mine! Great player.
Very nice, I like this kind of restoration with a practical use in mind. About the price, a used steel vise like that here would go for about 100 USD, and that's almost half of a monthly minimum wage.
Thank you. most of my restorations are done with a practical use in mind. 100 USD is a lot of one's salary here as well. I view these more as working tools than collectible items. However I do enjoy them for their looks as well.
A man after my own heart. Loves his vices. Every shop needs one you said, but does that include 10 in my small shop? 😁 My wife says I have too many. I tell her to get her eyes checked. Great video mate. Loved the brushed look with a faint hint of green paint
thanks buddy. Too many vises? I don't understand those words. as for the wife go start counting her pairs of shoes. Tell her I'll have as many vises as I want. Then run like hell to your shop.!! LOL
Another job well done. Came out beautiful, You say, "A little bit of lube never hurt" My GF says, "A little bit of lube keeps it from hurtin." "Graybeards" do the best work.
What did you use for oil when you heated it up? Does it really matter what oit we use? I used a mineral spirits on my Wilton vise, that should have been aborted.
@@Uwannawatch how long does the oil finish last before rusting? I did a Wilton a month ago and no issues yet. I just finished a Prentiss #58 with the same method, heating to 300 F and coating with oil overnight and someone asked me how long to repeat. Made me wonder. Thanks in advance sir.
I haven't had to redo this Yost . Still no signs of rust yet. But I've had to do lesser quality vises again shortly after. Yost ,Reed, Wilton seem to not rust again as easy. But My Hollands which is my every day user needs to be reoiled every other month. I think it depends on the quality of the steel. Hope that helps. @@dalesimonds

You can use any light oil. I use 3in1. But when I do high heat treatment for nuts/bolts I use used motor oil. Hope it helps.
