Falla's dynamics aren't just about decibels, they're about colors and character too...This is where our Ciccolini excels.

Fantastic performance! Indeed nice to read the score as well. Don't understand the critics on the dynamics. Ciccolini now in his 80's is still playing very well, as i expecienced one week ago in Amsterdam, playing a complete Liszt program.

If you want to hear a version that goes from ppp to fff, listen to Shunta Morimoto's performance (PTNA 2021-japan). This kid is the reincarnation of Glenn Gould (according to his expression)! There is also the good play of Alex Alguacil.

In the Fantasia Baetica you encounter extreme dynamics (from ppp to fff). You are supposed to bring them out. In this version, it sometimes is hard to hear the difference. Ciccolini hammers pp's like they were ff's at times. And no, I cannot do it better, but I can read scores and am familiar with other versions.

hanpasado it is live. Perhaps the softness needs to be heard. It is all relative to the hall you are in i reckon performing.
You might get softness in another player elsewhere.

I noticed this as well. He also had quite a few errors where he wasn't playing things as written in the score.

I agree about the dynamics, although its being live certainly has to be taken into consideration. That being said, the passion of the performance is undeniable! How exciting it must've been to experience this piece live!!

This poorly known score is even more extraordinay than Iberia by Albeniz. It is a masterwork for piano of the beginning of XXth Cenury. The rendreing of Cicolini is awesome !!!!!!

@cjdarnieder which would indicate his shortcoming as a pianist. or maybe he actually wanted it to be dynamically uniform? i liked the performance in any case.

The late Ciccolini was a true jack of all trades. I admire him for playing this repertoire and I think he did an adequate job. But not by any stretch among the best. It's rather monochrome, loud, dogged and heavy-handed, lacking in poetry, and not especialy accurate. He could have done so much better.

Necesita reorientarse.

    • @albertomartin4812

Cierto.

  • @peterlunow

I agree ,this is certainly NOT a great performance.

  • @Janaceks_Dad
    @Janaceks_Dad 13 лет назад

Alicia de Larrocha practically "owns" this piece as much as any performer can own a piece of music...I'm still a bit mystified how shat he managed to make sense of scores that in other hands sounds like garbled notes...
Ciccolini may be great in other repertoire, but he makes quite a mess out of this Fantasia.

No dynamics, no rubato, no nothing. We are on ground zero of interpretation here. It would be difficult to do less.
