When I first saw this 10 or more years ago, I still had a feeling that this was far too specific to be a part of Samurai Jack. So I looked it up and got hooked on Lone Wolf and Cub. BEST HOMAGE IN THE HISTORY OF TELEVISION
Yo, dead ass people have no idea how Deep samurai jack was when it first came out and all of the old school throw back references to cinema cult classics.
Most people have no clue who Lone Wolf & Cub is though unfortunately. It's obviously one of my favorites, reading thr Manga now and have the Criterion Collection BD 6 film set.
Can we all appreciate the animators work on Daigoro's eyes. Daigoro's eyes are cold and hard. They are accustomed to death and accept the inevitability of his own. While young Jack's eyes manage to retain innocence at this time of his life. The brilliance of these animators to convey so much with so little dialogue is truly amazing and a testament to their talent.
Yeah, both father and son walking the path of the Meifunado: peniless, ostracized by society, killing to survive and get revenge, watching many atrocities in their way besides killing and murdering, etc. Meanwhile, Jack was a prince who even though it wasn't a spoiled one (he had parents who taught him about the importance of honor, compassion, being unselfish and righteousness), had a happy and innocent life like every kid before the return of Aku.
+SEnigmaProductions Frank Miller's Ronin was probably the biggest inspiration. It also has a time traveling magic sword wielding samurai in a dystopian future.
Two minutes and thirty two seconds felt like ten minutes. The compelling nature of Tartakovsky's storytelling just sucks you in and makes you think and feel for yourself instead of spoonfeeding you how you should feel. AND THERE WAS NO DIALOGUE! Absolutely brilliant scene and a masterclass in storytelling.
Wow I didn't expect to find you here! Yea it's amazing how even Lone Wolf and Cub had a cameo appearance here lol. I wonder if this means Diagoro and Jack are the same age 0_o.
Ashwin Musipatla They could be. The manga was extremely influential. It influenced lots of pieces of literature as well as various films, like The Road and Road to Perdition.
+gilgamesh310 He's not best Samurai ever, I dont think he is even a samurai, just an executioner trying to get revenge for being excused by yagyu. The best samurai would probably be Miyamoto Musashi.
Danb o He effortlessly destroys anyone who stands in his way, throughout the vast majority of the manga. Musashi struggled, and was beaten several times.
gilgamesh310 I don't recall that happening. From what I've heard and read of Musashi, while he has struggled, he was "unmatched" or "undefeated". He likely can and has lost, though. Though, whether to compare him to Lone Wolf is strange. Lone Wolf is a fictional character, Musashi was purportedly a real person. Technically it's more fair to compare him to fictional variations of Musashi. Plus, even if Lone Wolf did beat anyone in his way, that doesn't automatically A) make him a better samurai, or B) make him a better swordsman.
+Da Triton In that instance, since you spoiled the ending, I wouldn't call that a fight; since Retsudō simply stood there with his arms wide open. As far as the new series, I know; Daigorō is being "trained", but I dropped the series after three books since it's nowhere near as good as the original. So I don't know if his training went any further.
Samurai Jack was largely inspired by a comic called Ronin by Frank Miller (nameless samurai fights a shape-shifting demon in the future wielding an enchanted katana, the only weapon that can kill the demon), which itself was inspired by Lone Wolf and Cub. It had not received an English translation at the time Frank Miller had read it but he liked the pictures.
Uh, there was a anime film from 1963 where Samurai Jack got its major influence from. You never heard of The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon? The music for the anime film was done by Akira Ifukube (the same guy who did the music composure for the Godzilla film). Isao Takaharta (the guy who was one of the founder for Studio Ghibli) was one of the assistant directors who worked on that animated film.
I like how most of the sceans are silent with just like music or ambient sounds. It's truely shows you can have a brilliant show with out a lot of dialogue
I just noticed he closes his eyes during the fight. Is that homage to Zatoichi, the Blind Swordsman? The actor that played Zatoichi in 25 films was the older brother of the actor who played Lone Wolf, and he even produced the Lone Wolf movies!
Might have him just narrowing his eyes Eastwood style. And yeah, how awesome is it that Ogami Itto and Zatoichi were brothers IRL. Hell, in the movie Black Rain, originally, they wanted the Japanese cop to be played by Shintaro Katsu, but he suggested his friend instead. Cause then you'd have had Ichi and Itto both in one movie.
The only reason I knew this reference is by my father he read ALL the comics and was Astatic to know his fav show was kinda connected to his fav comic series. Also too if they made this reference in the 2017 season I’m guessing it would’ve been a whole lot more gruesome.
It’s understandable why Jack’s Father had no Beef with this man. He recognized and was even empathetic to the pain of Almost losing his Wife and Son. There is only one thing he could do, not stand in this Man’s way. For his determination and desire fire vengeance is a road paved in loss and bloodshed.
"Lady Snowblood", or "Shurayukihime", is a Japanese manga and film from the 1970s about a woman seeking revenge by killing the three people responsible for the rape of her mother and murder of her mother's husband and son. "Lady Snowblood" is the main inspiration for "Kill Bill," the 2000s film about a woman seeking revenge against the three people who attacked her wedding and left her for dead.
...I wonder... ...did Jack ever see on a forest path Ryunosuke Tsukue and his sword of doom encounter an ambush, and run the gauntlet of fourteen men of a rival sword school?...
this is from the episode where the first memory it showed Jack trying to catch a grasshopper along with a girl who gave him a kiss on the cheek after he gave her an origami grasshopper so there's kind of a retcon to season 5 with ashy and Jack I don't remember her name.
COOL!!! A Cameo of an ICONIC Ronin & the Baby in his Protection!!! SERIOUSLY; Lone Wolf & Cub is even referenced in Bob's Burgers(as Hawk & Chick) AND the Inspiration behind the Plot of The Mandalorian!!
I never got this as a kid but now that I understand this was a reference I'm shocked, and also sad because kids won't get the references to the things they see in cartoon or any other show but we will and that'll be the same for when they grow up
I've not read the manga, but I'm currently on the last movie of the Lone Wolf and Cub movies (which are excellent!) and I appreciate this clip. Very well done.
I really wish there was a Lone Wolf and Cub video game for either ps or xbx. Of course, it would be in sandbox format, since Ogami roams around medieval Japan while looking for contracts. I'd pay top dollar for that game.
So skilled he did not even kill them, just used so much force behind his swings they were sent flying off the bridge when they were blocking his blows.
You guys probably remember the episode with the baby. 1:59 It was at this moment people, that Jack had achieved Sakai, the spirit of the samurai (or maybe not) *yells "momotaro"*
Part of me wonders what would have happened if in season 5, jack met Ogami, or even better since it’s in the future what if instead he met the cub, now a fully grown wolf, and a master swordsmen like ogami before him
Saw this show when I was a kid. Always found it interesting that this scene carried so much weight for some reason. Now at 29 years old, accidentally stumbled upon Lone Wolf & Cub. I immediately recognized the two! 😱
Genndy and Kozure Okami. There is no doubt Samurai Jack is his love letter to the franchise. Watch the 1970s version every episode is someone desperately asking for Ogami Itto's help to assassinate someone or the evil Yagyu trying to kill Ogami Itto. Sound familiar?
2002: It's now on Cartoon Network with Samurai Jack. 2019: It's now on Disney with The Mandalorian. 2020: It's now on Adult Swim with the Rick And Morty short.
The thing is, if Lone Wolf and Cub existed in the same universe/timeline as Jack, then that would make Jack's dad evil and/or part of a corrupt government. Since Lone Wolf came about as the result of a corrupt government of which he was its high executioner.
this is the one pre season 5 moment where I think they should have taken a risk and shown a bit of blood in the water after Lone Wolf cuts them down, they could have made the scene go black and white to help soften it and it would have still worked well the scenes advantage as a homage
"could you imagine if this scene was in the new Samurai Jack?!" It was technically, just his Father instead of Lone Wolf. The Bandits even look the same with the same get up and wicker baskets over their heads, lol.
When this originally aired i laughed because its a reference few people will get who havnt read the manga. Unfortunately since it was on samurai jack they werent allowed to show the usual gore thats associated with lone wolf and cub.
50% of all people who watch this clip are people who learned the story of wolf and cub @andwent “wait a minute that sounds familiar..........SAMURAI JACK”.
One of those awesome cameos that kids won't really get.
When I first saw this 10 or more years ago, I still had a feeling that this was far too specific to be a part of Samurai Jack. So I looked it up and got hooked on Lone Wolf and Cub. BEST HOMAGE IN THE HISTORY OF TELEVISION
I just recently read lone wolf and cub. HOLY SHIT THIS MANGA IS TIMELESS MASTERPIECE. I love it.
I saw it I was 13 I knew cause my uncle showed me lone wolf
Boomers be like
I didnt get it either growing up
Over 60 years later Jack would understand exactly what lay behind those eyes.
Ōkami
A wolf.
Yo, dead ass people have no idea how Deep samurai jack was when it first came out and all of the old school throw back references to cinema cult classics.
Hehe , Sometimes as deep a series is , you often keep quiet because it's way too much to explain it's awesomeness.
Most people have no clue who Lone Wolf & Cub is though unfortunately. It's obviously one of my favorites, reading thr Manga now and have the Criterion Collection BD 6 film set.
samurai jack gained a desire to become a swordsman by watching OGAMI HIMSELF TAKING ON A BAND OF THUGS!!!
that right there is badass.
They were not thugs, they were the kurokawa shinobis (oniwawanshu if you want)
well i mean he was the emporer's son so i would imagine he would learn how to use a sword
The Brilliant And Amazing Gamer oh I always thought it was because he was raised to become a samurai.
The samurai training was only because of Aku's return. This vid took place beforehand.
They looked more formally clothed to be just mere thugs.
And just like that, for the first time in my life I see my name used in a sentence that is not directly referencing me
@@daigorogreco1715 if we were friends and hung out together a lot. You would get entirely sick of me saying your name in an Ogami Itto voice.
“HE HAS THE DEATH LIFE EYES!!”
Daigoro...
Your mother is waiting for you at the River Styx on Sanzu River.
*Before fight*

*After*
Cub: Yeah. My daddy is awesome.
+The Archivist Cub: ...You're good....
Daigoro*
Daigoro
kid Jack: My daddy saved the entire universe from Aku.
Jack’s dad could still beat him though
If this isn't the coolest way to say they were inspired by Lone Wolf and Cub, I don't know what is
1:59
_“There! SHISOGAN! Eyes that only a warrior stained with the blood of countless killing fields can have!”_
“He has enter the State of Sakai the Spirit of the samurai...”
"Me and my son... we are living in meifumado"
I wonder of he is Ogami Ittō's son. The look is the look Samurai strive for through a lifetime, that child has those eyes.
So, in a way Lone Wolf was an inspiration to Samurai Jack
Bennet Dudley In-series, most definitely.
In real life, however, the main creator was inspired by SEVERAL samurai action manga.
+SEnigmaProductions Frank Miller's Ronin was probably the biggest inspiration. It also has a time traveling magic sword wielding samurai in a dystopian future.
im surprised no one brought up akira kurosawa
Cheese Block there was a Yojimbo inspired theme in the Demongo episode which was friggin awesome :O
Well . . I'm surprise your comment :) are you a fan of Lone Wolf and Cub?

ten minutes? Felt like an eternity watching that clip. Amazing.
this was one of the most awesome cameos ever
Cameo? you mean that dude was in another series? Which one I MUST KNOW!
Its a classic manga and movie called Lone wolf and cub.The movie was called shoguns assassin look it up one of the greatest
John Olmos thnx
enjoy man they have anthology editions out now its extremely cool samurai era action
John Olmos I just got done reading the first 272 page of it. Man it is fucking hype.
On this path of Meifumado...I met Samurai Jack.

And Lady Snowblood.
Amazing him and Goseki Kojima weren't super educated and made some of the best revenge storytelling and art there has ever been.
Ogami Ittō and Daigorō are legend.
+Ardenwolfe does the kid also fight?
+Parodyst1 It's rare, but in some scenes in the graphic novels, he does fight back. But it's nothing like the level of Ogami.

Lone wolf and cub are the best legends in Japanese tales
In a sense, i feel this was Gendy's way of animating a beloved memory of his.
perfect.
samurai jack is worthy of the lone wolf and vice versa
Shogun Assassin! Tartokovsky and Tarantino need to work together. They both referenced this is in their works

If Tarintino were to make a film for Samurai Jack, I only have this to say: TAKE MY MONEY!

"you have disgraced my family"
"You did that yourself giving your kid that haircut"
I wonder if the hat floating by at 1:43 is meant to imply that one was beheaded
I was just reading Lone Wolf and Cub today and thought “Man Samurai Jack HAD to have been inspired by this.” I completely forgot about this scene!!
Assassin Lone Wolf & Cub at your service...
... I come for YOU!
I remember almost yelling my head off at 2 a.m. when Lone Wolf and cub showed up!! Prefect cameo-even down to Diagoro’s hair!! :D
I hope in the upcoming season, Zatoichi and Yojimbo will have a cameo in Jack's past
I hope they get lady snow blood personally.
What is *Lady Snow Blood?*

Thats Because Lone Wolf and Cub Aka Shogun Assassin Is A Violent Film With Graphic Deaths.
Well...
The reference is from Lone Wolf & Cub, an adult manga.
So let me get this straight
-Jack was watching all alone with no guards (he is the son of emperor)
There's also those three bullies who took jack's ball.
2:00 " THE DEATH-LIFE EYES?!"
I've not read the manga, but I'm currently on the last movie of the Lone Wolf and Cub movies (which are excellent!) and I appreciate this clip. Very well done.

I saw all 6 in one day at a theater a few years back. My ass was numb by the end, but I didn't care.
now go for the 70s TV show :)
Amazing - Jack met Daigoro and saw the Lone wolf in action
This scene makes me want Mr. Tartakovsky to produce a lone wolf and cub series,
Oooh....have to look at that closely. That's a "don't fuck up" property.
So skilled he did not even kill them, just used so much force behind his swings they were sent flying off the bridge when they were blocking his blows.
