Offline ultimate has 6 frames of native input delay, not counting the monitor.
Online having a 10+ frame delay on LAN isn't uncommon.
@@UhhhDusta monitor and should always be sub 1 frame of lag at a good event anyway. And controller lag is around sub 1 frame outside of the native lag. Anything more than 15ms of monitor lag is horrible. I remember playing at events with like more monitor lag than 10 frames of lag, playing on like 15-16 frames of lag
now if Hbox wins against Zain in a major due to him taking a break for 90 days i dont want to hear NO EXCUSES....

DontTestMe getting a huge buff transitioning to Ultimate. Roy is a really hype character to watch, so seeing you play him would be really fun. Plus he's absolutely broken if you can learn the early kill confirms so that's a big plus.

Part of the issue that HBox claims is that he's playing the same character, so in many ways it feels the same but that fucks up a lot of his intuition for what works in Melee.
So like, Roy is an echo fighter or whatever, but for this to be a true Ult poisoning, you've gotta play Marth, and go for tippers and stuff in Ult with Marth's very different hitboxes, and then see if that messes you up in Melee after a couple months

As someone who played both for a long time, playing ult with a switch pro controller instead of gcc was super beneficial cause it stopped me from trying to use my melee muscle memory and trying to wavedash and shit that just doesn't work in ult

A couple years back there was a video where Cody was helping Hbox. And part of what Cody kept telling him is "you're playing too much Ultimate." Combined with his poor results during the online era of Melee it might have been the case.
The Ultimate Detox will help because it means he'll play that much more Melee. Maybe it'll help to forget about Ultimate Jiggs. And M2K coaching and being on it more, should help too. However, because he's a streamer now, he won't be in the same state of mind of mind of 2015 - 2019 HBox. The biggest difference between now and then is that he wanted respect, he wanted to be number 1, and he needed to prove it to whoever (Himself, his dad, his peers, Melee fans in general.) Now he probably wants to prove it to his newer fanbase that 2015-2019 Hbox existed. Most of those motivations aren't around anymore. He needs to get back to 2017/2018 (maaaybe 2019) Hbox to win a major, and that might not be enough.
Also poisoning is a fun experiment, but you'd probably have to do it for 4 years to see if it effects you.

Roy is probably the move but I could also see Pit or Joker being worth trying out too! All pretty hard-working but rewarding characters that can use their spacing, movement, and frame data to cook people.

Prya/Mythra will be perfect with you because with your melee play style you always try to adapt, with them being two characters in one you can have fast rush down of fox with Mythra and a hard hit DK with Prya, when also being a swordy. Those characters there easy to secondary if you don’t like them (Mkleo[former][Top 1 for 2019 to 2022 Spargo [Top 2 for 2023], shuton [Top 10 for 2023]) but with my personal experience Mythra herself is the funest character in the game in my opinion. Also if you want a free win on FD (Like Marth fox 60-40🤫) and also make content on the secondary kazuya with (Tea[Top 12], Acola[Former][Top 1 in 2023], Riddles[Top 9 in 2023] and etc. With Riddles even using Kazuya on FD against sonic and Steve with him saying that he will play Terry(Sonic) and cloud(Steve)

for your ult character, for it to be a proper poisoning you should play a character that plays a lot like marth in melee (hbox often says that playing the same character in both games is part of what fucks him up) and for that I'd go lucina. obviously marth exists in ult, but lucina is kind of just a better version of marth in that game. also she's just a very fundamental swordie, which would probably match your skill set pretty well
As someone who loved the Melee + Smash 4 crossovers in early Ultimate, and loves seeing top players trying different games, this sounds like so much fun! Can't wait to see how it goes

You know that's actually a really good point, Corrin's general gameplan and combos are probably the closest thing Ult actually has to melee marth (though still pretty different in a lot of ways).

It’s actually not that bad. Ppl just like to complain bcuz either 1 they’re ass at the game or 2 they can’t handle the toxic players online. The connection itself is fine. You get used to it.

Some advice: make sure you buy a MODDABLE switch, then you can install the low latency mod so your online practice is actually useful (yes the delay is that bad)
Please please please do this. 90 days is a long time. Ult has 2 input delay mods: one changes some rendering settings and lowers input delay by 1f online AND offline, and the other lets you set your input delay in wifi arenas. The minimum in unmodded ultimate is an additional 4 frames of delay when online, but with the mod you can set it to 2 if the connection is good. And for the love of god use an ethernet cable.

I honestly think your style would fit young link and corrin. YL more on the tricky movement and conversions(and if you like chucking projectiles everywhere), corrin on the spacing and converting into tipper stuff.
YL can also suffer Marthritis so it’s perfect 😂

Corrin would probably be the most natural pick. She can tipper f smash and pin and the combo routes are the closest to melee Marth.
my three character recommendations are: ROB is really fun/broken/easy for beginners, corrin has lots of easy bake combos and thrives off of big stupid sword aerials+has a lot of kill power/confirms, and roy is fast with fun combos but is easier to cheese

I hard agree with Corrin, the character is probably the closest analog to Melee Marth imo and is just a solid+fun character at all levels of play.
Wifi isn't fun even if you can get past the input delay, the only characters people are playing in ranked are zoners with the occasional KRool/DK.

Roy would be cool, but if you're going to do this experiment properly, you should probably play at least a fair bit of Marth, since the bleed-over messing with muscle memory is, I think, the main "issue" that a detox attempts to avoid. Would also be cool to see someone as good as you attempt to push the character to its limits for once (instead of just settling on Lucina).
Also, would be awesome after the 90 days to see you and Hbox do a back-to-back exhibition match in both games, to see who came out on top!
i mean, leo put in time with him, he just wasnt a good enough character to go hard on. if the god of spacing didnt think tipper mechanics were worth it, then they prob arent.

Nah, no way such a fundamentally different char is gonna be suitable. HBox is a top 3 puff in Ult, Zain wouldnt be able to get to that level in 90 days in such a fundamentally different game and playstyle.
Zain would have to stick to chars closer to his style if he wants to actually get reasonably good at the game in only 3 months. Especially since he has to relearn a lot of fundamentals about neutral as Ult's neutral and general flow is quite a bit different than Melee's.
I would recommend modding your Switch (if possible) so that you can get rid of the initial 5 extra frames of delay that Nintendo puts on Smash Ultimate online for everyone (insane move honestly), and don’t forget to play with a LAN adapter.

Get a lan adapter. It'll make your life a lot better. Or get a oled switch that has a lan port. Also the lossless gcc adapter is nice, if you don't already have one.

The only tips I can give you is buy a 3.0 wifi adapter and learn how the buffering system works. Master all 3 of the different buffering systems and wifi will be infinitely less painful. Itll bring the pain from a 10 to a solid 6.

I think the number one thing that takes a bit to get used to in ultimate is how everyone has a 3 frame jump squat (save for Kazuya) so jumping in general tends to be a pretty strong option.

If you’re going to play a character in Ult as a beginner to Ult specifically, you’ll want something intuitive while also bearing some resemblance to Melee Marth. Corrin is my suggestion for who you should main. You could also go the DontTestMe route and play Roy (Main or secondary), where he’s actually top tier this time

You definitely have to play Marth if you want to see if the poisoning experiment is true or not. Hbox plays puff in both. It would be cool to see if you can get good with Marth in Ultimate because he isn’t really used and if you could get results with Marth that would be quite the joy to watch. Marth’s Tippers in Ultimate feel so much better to land in game or watch as a spectator just because Ultimate puts more emphasis on them compared to melee.
I'm looking forward to how this video will age after 90 days, and he goes back to playing melee. I'm hoping it won't toxify too much.
being a melee marth main before transitioning to ultimate, i found that cloud is surprisingly very close to how melee marth moves and recovers in ultimate
but if you want the true "detox", then definitely play marth; he's a very space-reliant character with his tippers which can get insanely early kills
p.s. i still remember the days of early ultimate of me remembering that i can't wavedash and ledgehogging wasn't a thing anymore

The true poisoning cam be with steve. Plus you will probably get super good results with him and show the ultimate scene why he needs a ban. Its a win win situation
The wifi is kinda that bad. I still remember Rushdown Revolt had delay settings for the rollback they listed as: +1, +2, +3, +4, +5, +6, +7, Smash Ultimate. The real kicker is the Switch's innate input delay though. I cannot be asked to ever play something fast paced on that thing. all in all, you're probably looking at around like 10 extra frames of delay going from a PC with realistically 2-6 frames of delay combined to 6 frames of input delay base + the netcode delay.
A couple suggestions would be to DEFINITELY watch Izaw's guides on neutral and ESPECIALLY his character guides for whichever character you choose to play (sword characters would definitely fit you the best, so either Roy, Marth too, and Cloud). If you don't know about him, he is the #1 Smash Ult coach on metafy. Just search him up he has a youtube channel with the guides I mentioned wich are super informative and designed for beginners to even pro players. Btw it would be amazing to see you play Cloud. Maybe even Byleth?? However its best to stick to either Cloud, Roy or Marth for now because Byleth arguably has some vastly different aspects.

I feel like for this to be a valid experiment you have to play Marth, since hbox plays jiggs in both games which could contribute to more to his melee play being tainted by his ultimate habits

tbh I would love to see you play some Inkling again, the character kinda stopped getting representation in the meta (mostly due to people's opinion of the character changing) and it would be really cool to see again. Good luck! :D will be fun to watch
Zain is pretty optimistic and just loves the game. I think he’ll enjoy Ultimate, and I think he’ll be able to tough out the WiFi if he’s on lan and maybe even mod.

I think Roy is a good choice. Other characters I'd check out are Pyra and Mythra, Cloud, Corrin, Palutena, and Lucina. All characters that are easy to pick up, strong characters, have good to amazing advantage states, and of course... swords (except palutena but she has a similar appeal).

You should enter an ultimate major towards the end too!
Wifi isnt completely unplayable, but it really varies. If the opponent has a good connection and LAN, its usually not completely terrible. Def higher input delay than offline, but not to the point of unplayable.
But fighting people with sub-par wifi can be terrible. Even little stutters can just ruin the experience.
Also, the biggest issue with Ult wifi is that the input delay is inconsistent. It will vary from person to person based on the distance and connection. This means doing really precise things is a lot trickier. You can get used to it, but its definitely not ideal, and its more noticeable the better you get.
But yea, overall its not completely terrible when the connection is good. Its definitely playable. The main issue is just that the connection quality is so variable making for a really unfun and frustrating experience sometimes.

the thing for me is , im fine playing melee and ultimate as long as i dont play the same character in both. maybe not if that character was a lot different in the two games, but when its like the same character but slightly different, thats what was hard for me. Marth would be a good example maybe, basically the same character, but im sure it must feel a lot different playing marth in melee vs in ultimate. For me it was Pikachu, switching between games with pika was hard lol

Corrin is a "frame trap" monster. Good for reading DI, out spacing, hard punishes etc that might translate well from Melee? Roy, Marcina, Pyra/Mythra, Cloud maybe Shulk or ZSS too.

Im very excited to see Zain tip his toes into Ult, would love to see the Roy pop off
Also, the wifi is really bad without a wired connection, and even then it can be pretty rough. Luckily, there are mods that make wifi’s delay better, so I would highly suggest buying a moddable switch. You can have someone help you out with installing the mod or just do it for you, as well as getting the training mod pack, which is also a godsend.
I would really reccomend either diddy kong or aegis(pyra and mythra) they both have great top level representation and diddy has a lot of fun air based combos with interesting movement tech and plays like melee spacies with a banana, mythra is the fastest swordie in the game with very linear playstyles so I reccomend her to any beginner and pyra has BIG hitboxes that hurt like hell
