Blencathra is more of a small range than a single fell, a series of tops standing out on a curving ridge 3 miles long. It has smooth, easy slopes to the north and west, whilst displaying a complex system of rocky spurs and scree slopes to the south and east.
When viewed from the southeast, particularly on the main Keswick to Penrith road, Blencathra appears almost symmetrical. To left and right, the ends of the fell rise from the surrounding lowlands in smooth and sweeping curves, clad in rough grass. Each rises gracefully to a ridge-top summit, Blease Fell on the west and Scales Fell to the east. Between these ‘book-ends’ are a further three tops, Gategill Fell, Hallsfell and Doddick Fell, giving a scalloped profile to the ridge.
From each of the three central tops, a spur runs out at right angles to the main ridge, beginning as a narrow, rocky arête and then widening into a broad buttress which falls 2,000 ft (610 m) to the base of the fell. Separating the five tops are four streams which run down the south-east face between the spurs. From the west these are Blease Gill, Gate Gill, Doddick Gill and Scaley Beck.
In addition to the spurs on the southeast face, Hallsfell also throws out a high ridge to the north. This is the saddle that gives Blencathra its alternative name, rising beyond the dip to the sixth top, Atkinson Pike. This is the focal point for connecting ridges to Bannerdale Crags and Mungrisdale Common to the north. The ‘saddle’ is bounded by crags to the east, Tarn Crag and Foule Crag being the principal faces.
The Cloven Stone on the Mungrisdale Common is the only natural feature distinctive enough to be named on the OS 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 map in an otherwise bleak landscape.

Loved that one Andy. Something very primal and raw about a winter hike in the thick clouds. It really brings all your senses up
Thanks for watching Robert... Aye mate I absolutely love conditions like these...saying that these days I prefer to keep off the dangerous ground and opt for routes I know well

Thanks for watching Tim very much appreciated mate 😊 👍🏻
Hi Andy and Billy. Fab vid as usual - super atmospherics and thanks braving numb fingers to bring us these images 😂 We were going to do Blencathra today - parked at The Mill and went up the flank path on Souther Fell. Got to the cairn and the snow came in so we decided to go up by the Glenderamackin and back down the path between The Tongue and Bannerdale Crags. Blowin' a hoolie at the top of the path. We had numb hands as well 😂. Done Blencathra many times so decided to leave a summit walk today. ATB Brian and Jill 😊
Thanks Brian/Jill... Aye Blencathras my most climbed Hill (over a hundred) its a place I feel perfectly safe in sometimes horrendous conditions...although I do choose my routes carefully keeping off the Ridges.
I love Bannerdale Crags too all that area is fantastic...good call guys turning round there's always another day 😊
Stay safe ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻

Hey Andy, great video especially starting so early in the dark, very atmospheric and wild, wonderful. Took some doing that hike mate so well done you, fantastic effort but worth it for the film you have produced. The conditions, light and scenery came across so well in this film, brought it as close to realism as you can get in a film, well done mate. Thanks for sharing, take care
Aye Steve it can get hard filming in what can be sometimes atrocious weather...lol I'll still go back for the camera I love getting the drama of these conditions when I think a lot of folk would just give up and put the camera away...thanks as always for watching and the great feedback mate very much appreciated 😊
Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🙏🏻
Great video…you did exceptionally well considering the conditions.
Thanks Chris very much appreciated...aye everything slows down in them conditions...its all about keeping your wits about ya... not rushing and just enjoy it.
Thanks for watching very much appreciated 😊 👍🏻

Fair play mate for the 6.15 am starting in January!!!!😮 looked bloody cold 🥶 great route up Blencathra. You chose ths window of weather just about right you could see it coming from the west ! You & Billy Bob 🐶🐕 exited the summit at the right time getting down on to Mosedale Common 👌when i used to go walking with dad he loved this area & i always thought it waz bleak & uninspiring BUT NOW I've taken over from him & think it's bloody marvellous away from civilisation ❤❤❤❤ Blencathra has to be in the top 5 fells in Lakeland 🙂great vlog Andy with you & The Rockstar 🐕🐶❤keep up the great content on the channel & Tracey channel too 👌😊🎉
Thanks David very much appreciated mate aye Blencathras my most climbed Mountain (over a hundred times) I always head there if I want a high Mountain in poor sometimes atrocious weather conditions I know all the escape routes and these days always play it safe....hope your well buddy 😊

@@RockStar67 I'm good thanks Andy looking forward to Springtime mate like us all keep on keeping on mate 👍 👌
Hi Andy, Hi Billy, absolutely brilliant as always. I'm with you on Mungrisdale Common, I thought it was brilliant when I was was there. As you say it's proper wilderness and as no one really goes there it's a great place to get away from the crowds. All the best marra.
Cheers Dave and as always thanks for watching very much appreciated
ATVB Marra!

Mighty indeed, Andy, one of my favourite fells, and such an atmospheric video, especially the start in the dark and with just a hint of the light in the east over the Pennines. That long saddleback ridge must be one of the finest in Cumbria and there's something very satisfying in battling the elements if you've got the right kit and experience. And such striking colours - white is never just white and winter in the mountains shows that to wonderful effect. I've not visited the Cloven Stone yet but I can see why it's a fav spot. Thanks for all your efforts with these videos and you certainly did it justice. I don't underestimate how much time they take, not only on the fell with back and forth to the camera in numbing conditions (have you trained Billy to retrieve the camera yet?!🤣) and especially in tough conditions, but in the editing later.
Thanks Irene.... Blencathras always been my favourite Hill I've been up every possible route and made a few new ones along the way...been to the Summit over a hundred times...for me the Cloven Stone is that special place we sometimes find...a peaceful place to think and reflect far from the madding crowd.
Thanks as always for watching Irene very much appreciated 😊

I know what you mean, Andy. I have a few spots scattered about the hills of Cumbria and Scotland which are special places that just sort my head out. The top of Short Stile ridge overlooking Riggindale is one - there's a hollow at the top of the ridge, which is off the main path along the Straits and the High Street melee. Also above Loch Avon on the Cairngorms by Feith Bhuidhe.

What a walk to start the New Year off Andy! Loved the opening production of the video too, very dramatic! Never been down the back of Mungrisdale Common but its look a fine descent into the valley. Im in the Lakes for a few days from tomorrow staying near Braithwaite. We need to do Skiddaw, Little Man and Lonscale but not sure the other half will cope up the long drag. Plan B is just to do Lonscale Fell, will still be decent views anyway. All the Best
Superb Tony I realy hope the weather holds out for you guys it's looking good 🙏🏻
Have a great time ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐ 🐶
PS thanks as always bud 👍🏻
A great watch Andy. Very well put together given the challenges. I can relate to that feeling of well being when the conditions are bad. The key is to have the right gear of course. Mungrisedale also has undeserved bass press. Some great views and remoteness.
Thanks for watching James very much appreciated mate 😊

Thanks buddy very much appreciated 😊 👍🏻 🐶 ⭐
Enjoyable video Andrew. Cheers 👍

Loved it Andy. I’ve got a route planned for later this year to go up Gategill Fell and then down over Mungrisdale and via the Cloven Stone. Never been that way before.
It's a great route Tony definitely one I know you'll enjoy...far from the madding crowd
