      All my sensors and Rift report usb 2.0 but all seem to work just fine without any issues. I'm using CableCreations 5m USB enxtenders for the sensors and the 5m Monoprice cable for the Rift.

      My only complaint about the Inateck that resulted in my return was that it's provided power cables didn't reach to plug in. Additionally, I am running a micro-ATX MSI B350M Mortar Arctic and it was simply too close to my GPU to allow proper ventilation. I've changed direction and purchased a powered USB Hub from Ankar.

    This card is a x4 card, not a 1x PCI card. It will disable nearby 1x slots on many motherboards. This will only affect people who have other pci cards. That being said, this card kicks ass. Also, there is another Startech card that has two controller chips vs the 4 on the tested card. Unfortunately, it's nearly as expensive as the 4 controller card. If it was $40-$50, it would probably be good forn4 sensors. I currently run 3 sensors with a 4 port intek. Also the Inatek card tested has 2 controllers, one is a VILnand controls the internal ports and one of the externals . That controller doesn't play well with Rift.

    The Inateck Card has 2 Controllers!(a VL805 and a VL812 i think...USB 3.0 Controller can supply a maximum of 4 usb ports ... if you distribute the sensors correctly on the two controllers, it should actually work with one of the Inateck cards. You only have to look at the PCB, which ports are attached to which controller. But I agree with you. The Startech card is a thousand times better, I use it myself with 3 sensors + HMD and i´m super satisfied!

    I have the other Inateck card with the Fresco and VIA Chip and it works fine, but I only use 2 Sensors. Why would you want to use 4 sensors anyway ? I think that I read tha Oculus itself recomends a maxi- and optimum of 3 Sensors for full roomscale. I use 2 and have a rather good roomscale experience with very rare hickups.

    Hi VR Oasis! Met you in the Oculus Support Forums about stable USB 3.0! ;) I also had the Inateck Card, which is recommended by Oculus, and my experience was similar to yours. It was unstable and caused errors with bad tracking and so on. Sent it back and bought the Startech Card. You should mention, that some mainboards switch to x8 speed for both x16 Lanes, if you plug in a PCIe Card in the second x16 Slot. Happened to me with my Asus Sabertooth Mark S Z97. Don't want to have x8 Speed for my 1080Ti, so I plugged it into 3rd x16 Slot and switched it to x4 Speed in Bios, which should work for the StarTech, because it's only a x4 PCIe Card. Had problems with 3 Mustec Cables (5m) and bought 3 CableCreation Cables (5m), which worked for the sensors, but caused audio issues with the HMD. I came up with two front Sensors with CableCreation, the third Sensor with USB2.0 (USB2.0 10m Cable), plugged in the mainboard and a Mustec Cable (5m) for the HMD. HMD and Sensors are all in StarTech Card. And now I have stable USB3.0 and no issues. I am curious about your next video with the cable extensions, because it was a nightmare to figure out the best combination. ;)

    • @VirtualRealityOasis
      @VirtualRealityOasis  7 лет назад

      Hey mate. Thanks for the comment. I've been testing the CableCreation 5m cables with the Startech. All sensors show as 2.0 but this doesn't appear to have affected performance of the tracking. I also had the audio crackle using CableCreation 5m cable with the Rift so switched to another cable (I think the one that came with my third sensor) and everything seems to work. I'm hesitant in recommending these cables as everything shows usb 2.0 but works fine :/

    • @linusvanpelt99
      @linusvanpelt99 7 лет назад

      Very interesting. My connection is a stable USB3.0 with these cables. Which speed to you have with the Startech Card on your Mainboard? x4? I have tested the connection via Wireshark and the sensors with USB2.0 are transfering less data then with USB3.0. ;)

    Already got this in my amazon basket, but do appreciate the overview of it tuning to confirm it works as advertised so i will buy from affiliate link
    I currently have 2x 3.1b asmedia controllers on mobo + a single inatek card running 4 sensors and the hmd atm with very little issue.
    Only glitch i have though, oculus devices shows all 4 sensors running properly, but looking at the physical sensors shows one of them doesnt have its active led lit. And its not always the same sensor. Unplugging it and plugging it back in fixes it but still a bit of a blag even though tracking seems fine.
    I have a 16x3.0 (running at 4x) slot on the mobo spare that will disable the 3rd nvme slot when in use, so hopefully should run this card at full speed.

    My setup is: 1070 TI, 2 sensors connected to USB 3.0 active cables of 5 meters and my Rift is connected to the type of USB cable and a HDMI of 5 meters. When connected directly to the computer they work normally, otherwise everything goes crazy and nothing works, the oculus stays off. I think it's a USB power problem, I've read forums and I've seen several videos, but nothing worked, the only thing I did not try was this Inateck Expansion Card, do you think it might work?

  • @mpampisxiotel831

    Startech card has card have 4 USB controllers and a plx bridge. It basically is 5 controllers that take multiple resources from one pc with a storm of interrupts when you use all the ports.
    When you have a PC with 2-3 pcie cards and you install this card also probably will take in device manager:
    This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)
    If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system.
    Also keep in mind that plx bridge dont work with all motherboards and add latency.
    The inateck is even worst. Has a via chipset that provide 4 ports. They took one port and put a hub. So four ports share the same bandwidth.
    The only real ports three. And from the photo i can see that the four ports that share the same bandwidth are the two internal and the two up .

    You forgot to list the model numbers of those cards. I found the Startech is model #: PEXUSB3S44V.
    I noticed right away, they Inatech is only a x1 card, so it has very limited bandwidth for more than two port (1 PCIe lane only supports 2 pr 3 USB 3.0 ports at full speeds. So if you plug in any more devices, you will likely have issues. The Start tech is x4, so can handle it just fine.
    Your Link to Inateck is broken for Amazon. Plus it is tied to UK only, so I couldn't buy the Startech card through your site to help support your time creating this video. Thank you for your video, it was helpful.

    Hi please answer I am struggling so much, basically I simulation race. this requires the steering wheel, The Pedals, The Wheel rim, 1 vr sensor and the vr headset, a keyboard and finally a mouse to be plugged in to my PC. When I plug all these into my PCs motherboard it can not handle it so it disables some of the ports. The solution is getting a USB expansion card I believe, however, would the startech one be more suitable? Does it give more power etc? Thank you.

    I've been googling around whether the x4 PCIe slot has enough bandwidth as inserting the Startech into the x8 won't increase it's bandwidth. Going by the wiki numbers and most motherboards within the last year being v3.0 PCIe, a x4 PCIe slot is more than sufficient.

    • @VirtualRealityOasis
      @VirtualRealityOasis  6 лет назад +1

      Yeah that's a good option. Just remember that the four port inateck card is the one to go for not the seven port card. Also note that your two front sensors should run on usb 3.0 and your third on usb 2.0 as per oculus recommendations. If you only have a 3.0 port use the usb 2.0 cable that came with your third sensor to knock the speed to 2.0. Hope that helps :)

    Bad experience with USB 3.0 add-on cards. I use Windows 7x64. It comes down to bad drivers and possibly bad hardware. With some cards, they'll hard-lock my machine - so can't use those. With some, data files copied through the USB 3.0 card will be corrupted (this is tested using a binary file comparison and/or a program like Teracopy by CodeSector). I wonder if data corruption may actually be the problem people have with the Inateck card if it otherwise installs correctly. I've tried that card and data corruption was definitely an issue. When I tried Windows 10 Pro with other cards in the past, the default Microsoft drivers tended to work better than any manufacturer drivers. I'm not a fan of Windows 10 though. So I wonder have you tested file integrity using the Inateck with different drivers? Just wondering.

    Hey Mike
    I just added to your oculus forum post, I basically got the inateck card first but no matter what drivers I used for it, windows or the ones from inateck, oculus kept saying my drivers needed to be updated but it seemed to work but I decided to go for the startech one instead as wanted to plug all my sensors into usb 3. Everything was great at first but pretty much every day now it's complete hit and miss with this card as the drivers just keep disappearing from device manager, meaning my sensors aren't being picked up. So annoying as i've tried taking it out and putting it back in, using the startech drivers or windows drivers but the drivers will be there one minute and then after a reboot, they will have disappeared again, so I've contacted their support as I'm at a loss

    So after literally going through $h1t to get the 3rd sensor to stop disconnecting and reconnecting every couple of minutes i finally realized that it might be caused by my MB usb controller (i have a pretty old mobo p8h67-m). Going to purchase the startech card (even tough its a tad more expensive) and hopefully it will finally do the trick.
    FFS i will never understand why 2 sensors + headset all connected directly to the PC works fine but plugging in the 3rd will just break everything and turn the "devices" page into a friggin traffic light.
    VR in theory:
    Buy a good PC
    Buy VR ready gpu
    Buy headset and dive into the VR world.
    VR in real life:
    Buy a super gpu (thank god for finally having a radeon vii with 16gb ram!)
    Buy a headset
    Buy expensive expension cards since oculus also has a blacklist of old USB ports.
    Pray for everything to finally work.
    Maybe its my millennial entitlement speaking but expensive things should work well straight out of the box.

    Just got the Inateck card because I only have free x1 slots. This may be a problem as I'm coming to the conclusion, with your video, that Oculus software is highly sensitive to clock timing and bandwidth within clock cycles and I want 4 sensors. Which means, basically every Oculus IO device (headset or sensor) needs its own PCI lane's worth of clean bandwidth. Intel chipsets can give relatively clean PCI like data throughput with onboard USB 3.0 to 3 Oculus devices because this is what CV1 is optimized for. Room-scale pushes chipset causing un-synchronized latency which confuses CV1, causing poor performance or crashing at worst (my thought). If you know how USB bandwidth is allocated, you know USB 2.0 gets it's own channel. This is why I think USB 2.0 vs 3.0 discussions for room-scale is ignorance. I'd like to hear from others but I believe if you provide each additional sensor a perfectly clean (without multi-port cueing, shared channel) PCIe channel, it will always work regardless of 2.0 or 3.0. It doesn't surprise me Startech card works like a champ and Inateck chokes CV1. This is why it makes me mad that Oculus recommended USB 2.0 for third camera without being clear about CV1's limitations with regard to room-scale and more importantly it's lack of built-in competitiveness with Vive in this regard. It spread stupid urban legends about what incantations or mixture of herbs and spices will enbiggen Rift into true room-scale. We are playing in beta land, but with the correct knowledge, we can get more out of Rift without the frustration. Thank you for your video.

      @CameronJust4064 7 лет назад +3

      When the sensor detects it is plugged into USB 2.0 it sends jpeg compressed images. When it detects it is plugged into USB 3.0 it sends raw uncompressed images. There is a huge difference in bandwidth between the two. The bandwidth difference was discussed in great detail in the 4 part blog post Oculus did in January 2017. The jpeg vs uncompressed images was discovered by people looking at the debug logs generated by the Oculus SDK.
      The difference between USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 is not imaginary. You can see yourself by looking at your Rift's logs.
      As for how badly the difference affects tracking. I've not seen conclusive tests done yet. For my 4 sensors setup though 2x are USB 3.0 and 2x are USB 2.0 and I have zero tracking issues no matter which way I am facing. So I can't imagine the impact is huge.

    • @stephanpark
      @stephanpark 7 лет назад +1

      Thanks Cameron. I guess, that is a better reason for latency on 2.0, gives me a better idea of how Oculus' sausage is made. And holy hell, they are ramming raw footage down my PC's throat? For dot tracking? Isn't it easier to interpolate point cloud in camera? Look at your optical mouse, you think it is sending raw footage of your coffee stains to your PC? Not you personally Cameron, you know what I mean.

    This entire USB3.0 situation with Oculus is really beginning to piss me off. My motherboard has no USB3.0 ports at all so I had to buy an external PCI-E card for other devices before getting a Rift. This is a Startech 4-port USB3.0 card (PCIUSB3S4). When I tried to use this for Oculus normal 2 sensor setup, I was getting the setup saying they were connected to USB2.0 ports (sometimes temporarily USB3.0 ports). This means the bandwidth was not available for full USB3.0 speed and the ports were falling back to much slower USB2.0 speeds for compatability. I then read that people at Oculus recommend the Inatek cards for for compatability so I bought one - like you the 7-port USB3.0 model (KTU3FR-5O2U) hoping this would fix my port issues, but when I tried this, I still found the ports were falling back to USB2.0 (maybe one gets USB3.0 occasionally). And now I hear there are actually two different USB3.0 cards from both manufacturers which are actually the correct ones to get - "4-port only" Inatek and "4-port, 4 controller" Startek?!? FFS. The amount of time and money I am wasting on incorrect cards, just because nobody seems to have a clue at Oculus as to what to recommend and what to avoid. By the way if you are saying your new "4-port, 4 controller" Startek card is still reporting sensors as USB2.0 then that means it is not working either - it is falling back to 10-times slower USB2.0 mode for some bandwidth related reason.

    • @geogan2

      I still wonder though why you are saying your high-end quad-channel Startek card is showing as USB2.0 in Rift setup. This is a fallback to USB2.0 speed on these ports according to Oculus software... and I checked... this particular USB3.0 card is available here in Ireland for €100, which is not cheap, as much as getting an extra sensor pack from Oculus.
