Not many have what it takes to reach the top in climbing. This unforgiving sport is just as much a mental game as it is technical and physical, and has humbled some of the fittest athletes in the world. The wall is however no match for paraclimber Brian Zarzuela.
This athlete doesn't have your average origin story, in fact, Brian was left out of sports as a kid because of his disability. But one day in middle school, he discovered an afterschool club that changed everything. Brian took up baseball, basketball, handball, ice skating, football, BMX, martial arts - you name it he tried it. He'd finally found an outlet for years of built up energy and it just felt right.
Climbing didn't however come naturally. On his 19th birthday, Brian took on his first wall, and he admits, he was pretty bad! But there was something about the sport that kept him coming back. He's winning medals across the world, but how does he perform at the US National Paraclimbing championships?

Im so happy Great Big Story is back!
We're happy to be back ☺
This is confusing as someone who just got here because looking at their channel they’ve been uploading consistently for ages?? Did they private all their videos for a while or something?
@@Vexarax GBS announced their retirement three years ago and then, around a year ago now, they came back to bring the world some more great and big stories (Search for the GBS video caled "A new chapter")
@@Vexarax from what I understand the company that sued to own them shut it down back in 2020 after they’ve been making videos for years and years, but then in 2023 came back with the help of a different company, but I don’t think most people knew they’ve been back for about a year now actually
@@bananabear9266They weren't sued, it was economics that shut it down. GBS belonged to CNN and right from the start they were losing money on it, CNN being debt ridden at the time also not helping, so they made the decision to shut it down. It wasn't until they partnered with WhyNow Media that it was restarted.
I work and climb at a gym this guy often goes to, and he’s such an inspiration, both for my climbing journey and as member of the community. Glad that he’s getting some attention!
This message. 🥹 Thank you for sharing! These comments have warmed our heart, seeing all the people Brian has impacted and inspired is truly incredible. ❤️
I have the same birth defect, and I have scaled a Rockwall that had no places to grip, but I did it through sheer adrenaline. He is impressive as all of us with disabilities face challenges head on! Keep up the good work!❤
Hi , I’m Brian’s mom just focus on yourself and keep going believe on God if you felt getup and start again
Thank you for sharing your story! We’re sending you all the love. Keep going and believing in yourself 👏❤️
Met this guy at movement hampden, absolute beast. Destroyed all the climbs I was working on.
Likewise, watching him climb there was so humbling
This makes me think of all the people in ancient history who had to climb a mountain, or trek long distances, or hunt with their tribe, with disabilities.
Tbh I don't think there were many, during ancient times most disabled children would die by natural selection. But the ones who didn't probably turned out awesome!
@@ptsdoge9812 Not may with a disability that was inherited, but I reckon plenty children that lost a limb during childhood.
I agree, humans are so adaptable and our mind always loves to experiment. Also harder living conditions make it easier to not overthink and just go for it, and against all odds we mostly make it. And we've been inventing new ways to do things for ages.
Inspired ❤ such a humble human being
Thank You GBS ❤
Brian and his coach are also part of the Adaptive Climbing Group (ACG)! There are multiple chapters of ACG now. I got involved just as a volunteer. They're a really welcoming and supportive community. 😁
We love this. 👏👏
I went indoor rock climbing and it is HARD, doing it with one hand is actually incredible
my friend Pete climbs trad routes with one hand because of a very similar defect so inspirational, this is a rad story keep sending brother
Nice story. Nothing can stop anyone with heart. Just try!
Really cool story; I wasnt expecting to see my home gym. So cool that I've climbed the same wall that this legend has.
🥹👏
Beautiful story ❤
Yay, it's always great to see a new upload from you guys. you guys always brings uplifting motivating stories. Glad to see ya guys comeback.
Thank you for watching and rocking with us all these years. It means a lot to us 🫶
Brian you are super inspirational!! Excellent example for us all ❤
mad respect bro!
Man this is inspirational
You see him climbing yet you still can’t believe it
Another awesome story!
You are back! I was like “this is old video I didn’t watch.. strange”
Where did they go? I’m looking over their videos and they seem to have been uploading consistently for ages? Their last upload was only 9 days ago before this one! But I’m seeing heaps of comments saying “you’re back!” Lol
We’ve been back since early last year. Since then, we’re shared some more cool stories too! Check them out in the ‘New Releases’ playlist on our channel ☺️
no WAY!! I do climbing!! The "coach" that was talking was saying some funny things about climbing, because you're always clipped in or have a mat under you, unless you do outdoor bouldering, but in that case you just need someone to spot you. I feel like he was just saying what the producers wanted him to say or he doesn't know what he's talking about (but I feel like he does). Anyway, those routes that the one-arm-climber was sending were actually pretty hard, so I'd be interested to see him climb more
A friend of mine almost had to have her leg amputated because she broke her legs really bad doing bouldering in an indoor gym. It is really dangerous.
However, yes, it is mostly just ripped skin and muscle/tendon tear
The exciting quotes are always chosen lol. Climbing can have very high consequences though if you do mess something up, indoors and on real rock. It’s always important to keep that in mind so you can limit injuries to the regular scrapes and bruised egos
@@AlmightyUniden People die in car accidents as well, doesn't mean we label driving as really really dangerous.
Of course you can make mistakes, accidents happen, but bouldering indoors is really not dangerous if you know your limits and know how to fall.
@@colemantrebor6574 You're exactly describing what a false sense of security is. Millions of people die from car related crashes and accidents but people are more scared of flying which has far less of a mortality rate.
Climbing is a dangerous sport and we shouldn't act like it's not.
Does that mean I will stop climbing? No, because I know the risk. Like the old saying goes: There are bold alpinists and old alpinists but there are no old bold alpinists.
Just like you said, you need to know your limits and judge if the risks are worth it.
The friend I said broke her leg previously still climbs too.
@@AlmightyUniden Millions of people might die from car crashes, but people drive for billions and billions of hours every year. Of course there is risk is involved, and to say there isn't would a false sense of security, but the risk is pretty low, especially if you know your limits.
Also alpinism is not really comparable to indoor bouldering which is what I was talking about.
Finally, a Great Big Story video about disabled athletes that isn't inspiration porn
if you dont climb this is very impressive but if you climb yourself you know how truly insanely hard this is
shit, now i have no excuses... what a legend.
😂lesgoooo more vids
Living legend 💪
I like that the narration begins how we all know him to be "where are you?"
No fair, he's one hand lighter than most of us. /s
Seriously, that's wildly impressive he can climb like that 😮
"Climbing entered the chat" Great Big Story got that modern day lingo
wait wut ur back?? 0,o
Im sad this channel never quite really recovered view-wise after coming back :(
Bro’s the definition of “just deal with it”
How did he train to get such a strong right hand?
idk i think he climbed
i think i know how...
🤔😮😏😏😏
@@hyper.borealis 😁 don't we all?
Dr Richard Kimble is looking to talk to Brian about something.
guess you can say his grip strength is all right
GBS Nice 🧗💪
Hhhhmmmm.. i swear this guy climbs at my gym in Columbia Maryland.. movement
dang you guys are back? just found you again today... i unsub because you guys was quiiting. a gonna binge watch you guys today.
This is the first video I’ve seen of theirs but I’m confused by the comments saying “you’re back” etc because looking over their channel they’ve been uploading consistently for ages (their previous video was only 9 days ago) and they even make regular Community Posts etc. did the Private their channel or something? :o
@@Vexarax your not updated? September 23, 2020, Great Big Story announced on Twitter that the company would be closing.
@@masterchiefy830 lol well like I said this is the first video of theirs I've seen, and I don't have Twitter, but yeah 2020 was ages ago and they seem to have been uploading regularly for ages now ^_^ you're not the only comment under this specific video seeming surprised that they're 'back' hence why I was wondering if maybe they'd recently privated their channel or something :)
@@Vexarax they just revive the channel a year ago... i UNSUBSCRIBED from them when they announce they will no longer continue doing content.
@@Vexarax maybe me unsubbing from them caused it or this. maybe youtube excluding them from my daily algorithm because I unsubbed. that is my best guest.
easier cause he weighs less
this is a joke; please do not kill me
Love this but it’s definitely an advertisement for Huel, blatantly obvious
Haha someone send this to pewdiepie!
Please stop making disability normal! We respect all people the same way. But only the very best of us deserve fame.
Take down your Billy Mitchell video and apologize for it.
why?
sponsored video fell off
They need funding
@@liriodendronlasianthus so fell off
That was Sportrock rio! They just opened it this year and it’s an incredibly gym. Thanks for covering this story and sharing the world of climbing GBS!🩷🩷
