- The Totem of Undying might have destroyed Minecraft. There are many unintended consequences, gameplay imbalances, and abuse of the item. In this video, I explain how the most powerful item truly ruined Minecraft 1.20 and its future because of raid farms that are too powerful in Hardcore Minecraft.

One point I was wrong about was Philzas use of the totem. I should have used a different example as he does not use the totem and was actually an example of how hardcore players should play the game. But there are many players that use the totem for hardcore like LuketheNotable, Sandiction, and many more.
I think people will be mad if the totem disapears
Yea so why not just make them more rare
@@marcorgirg so true, then crystal pvper's wont need to worry about the totems being removed
@@HanyMC Crystal pvp sucks and should never exist
@x_-ducky-_x5752 it’s so annoying on 2b2t without having hacks
@@marcorgirg ye Ive been on tbt2 but everything is gonna lol
I have to correct you on something; Philza rarely ever uses totems. He doesn't keep one in his off-hand, unless he's doing something specifically dangerous, and I don't think he's even used one in his current series, and he almost never used them in his 5 year world either.
The point was that they were necessary for the world to last 5 years. The first time he used a totem marks where the world would have been over if not for that one item.
I have to admit I didn’t do enough research on Philzas world but I’m sure he used it at one point making it last a long time
I think the most fair and balanced way to nerf the totem is just to make it it a 5% drop from evokers instead of 100%. Still makes it so they’re obtainable, but it severely nerfs the ability to farm them as you’d be getting probably one totem per raid instead of 8 per raid you can get currently. Farmers would need to consistently get bad omen if it doesn’t drop on the first raid.
Or maybe make it 5% in raids and 50% in mansions. There are so many possibilities
But then couldn't people find a way to start a raid in a mansion which increases the drop rate
@@Lewizz30 they’d still have to find the mansion in the first place which is what he said made it balanced originally in the video.
Stacking raid farms will still be so powerful to produce enough totems for a player as we do get now
@@fortun8diamond it would be too over powered
To be fair, I don't think totems actually have any play in making "100 Days in Hardcore" playthroughs less interesting. 99% of those videos are entirely scripted to farm likes and subscribers, so the creators simply backup their worlds and recover anytime they die. Totems wouldn't change this at all. Not that it's a problem, people can do whatever they want. I just don't feel it compares to people who play legit hardcore on their own, instead of for a video. Hardcore is still hardcore for them.
that is a good point you bring up. Many of those creators do fake it and not really play hardcore legitimately
You're a small creator yet one of my favourite, your reels gave me a lot of inspiration to start creating content
I appreciate that!
Minecraft is a sandbox, if you don't want to use the totem, don't use it.
Fair enough
Great info and high quality as always. Keep it up!
Appreciate it!
I wouldn’t really treat players that use the totem as lesser than players that don’t. The totem is a tool given by the game, and to use It is to use the recourses given to you, just like wood or stone.
but the totem is nothing like wood or stone, it grants a WHOLE other life to players
@@marcorgirg eh ya got me there 🤷♂️
The most simple, but one of the best solutions to this problem is to make raid evokers not drop totems, only the masion ones would drop. Maybe even make that raid evokers use totems themselfs and just don't have it when they die. It would solve the infinite totems problem and make one of the most interesting and challenging mobs in the game even more interesting and challenging. Or maybe we could get a new boss inside the masion that drops the totem, and evokers would just drop emeralds like vindicators. There is a lot of solutions to that problem but in current state the endgame PvP is unplayable and Hardcore stoped being a challenge (somone who is really bored and have a lot of time can try hardcore no hp regen it is still fun and challenging even with infinite totems).
Hopefully Mojang implements something of that nature because as of now it is entirely too easy to play “hardcore”
??? Philza doesn't use totems... that's like his whole thing... how are you gonna show footage of his world where he literally doesn't have a totem in his offhand and dies without a totem and then say "he was on the news because of the totem"... (Still a great vid tho)
I've always thought that a possible solution was to make evokers in raids less likely to drop the totem than in the woodland mansions but that wouldn't make a lot of sense
Or just Evokers in mansions
@@marcorgirg yea. Maybe a reason that would happen is that the totems are used by the evokers during the raid? Like you have to kill evokers twice, that way an extra layer of difficulty is added to raids
Imo, the totem of undying would be a challenging reward for taking on a mansion. It's too bad you can get infinite of them because of raid farms. That's the main problem with it. Since 1.14 it's way too easy to get.
1.14 ruined the totems to me
I would say that your point about people having the totem is so much better is true about anything. If i have netherite and you don't I will have a very large advantage. Additionally, getting the totem is difficult, raid farms are difficult to make, and people can nerf totems if they really want or make them harder to obtain either in your single player world or your server by adding rules like no raid farms. There is someone who went over 3000 days on HALF HEARTED HARDCORE without a raid farm. It should be up to the player.
Yea raid farms are too much
Never used totems because I'm too lazy to build totem farm or find a mansion
Proud of you
This is a very flawed outlook. The Totem isn’t magically making people immune to death. It makes it much easier to not die, but you still need to be good on the game to capitalize off of the chance given to you by the totem. If you’re mobbed by enemies and use your totem, you still have to deal with those threats around you with low health.
The solution isn’t to remove Evokers from Raids, they’re an important part of their difficulty. They alone are why the farms are tricky to design and build. Even outside of Evokers, Raid Farms are ridiculously OP. Rather, Raid Farms need direct nerfs.
Possible Nerfs:
• A village can only be raided every 5 minutes.
• A village must exist for 5 minutes before it can be raided.
• Bad Omen is not applied when killing Pillager Captains. Rather, it is given upon burning an Ominous Banner with a Flint & Steel. (QOL Change, but also makes it necessary to interact with the game to start raids).
• Tie more difficult raids to the Bad Omen effect’s potency. So you need to do more stuff to get a large volume of Evokers.
• Raids need enough flat area in order to spawn. No towers with a ton of lava on the top.
Those are amazing solutions
@@marcorgirg Oh thank you 🤪
The problem with not having evokers in raids is that it makes totems like the elytra when it comes to multiplayer. The first few players rush to get the first totems from the closest mansions and any new players have to travel potentially millions of blocks in order to get one totem. This actually makes pvp less fair than your point of it making pvp unfair when they're easier to get. If totems are available from raids then pretty much everyone has them, therefore it's evenly unbalanced. Also, crystal pvpers would be mad if the actual item itself was substantially nerfed.
I saw one suggestion that you should be so that you use it and it gives you an effect for 10-15 seconds which makes it so that if you would have died in that time, then what totem does now would happen. Problem with this, is I think it would hurt crystal pvp. My suggestion is to first off, make it not farmable. I think it SHOULD be renewable from raids like right now, but not farmable, and I also think that the rest of the raid would be nice to have farmable, just for the emeralds. Second suggestion, nerf the effects. Give it effects more similar to a golden apple. And final suggestion if you still don't like the idea of cheating death, the don't use it! If you don't like it being renewable, then just don't get totems from raids!
That is ultimately up to the player to not use totems or not but when it comes down to it, farming things in Minecraft takes the challenge away from the game itself. I hope maybe raids can like you said be farmable without the totem being a part of that equation
Personally I don't mind automatic farms. Honestly, totems are currently the only farmable thing that should in my opinion not be farmable. If iron farms didn't exist, everyone would be constantly mining iron, something I don't think anyone wants.
I think a simple fix would be to take evokers out of raids like you said. However, mansions need to be closer to spawn than strongholds are.
Instead of the evoker we could have the illusioner, who could drop the Trickster's charm. This would replicate the ability to make fake clones of yourself, but it would only last for 10 seconds. I could see this working in PVP, but it could have a use in singleplayer if Mojang added more bosses and minibosses.
Amazing solution
I really liked this vid. You should focus on this type of content and maybe make a new series called ruined!
It depends
I’m starting a small vanilla server with my friends, and to keep the Minecraft challenge, we’ve decided to ban some unfair items like netherite, elytras, and possibly totems. What would you recommend I ban to keep the vanilla feel and Minecraft challenge alive? Awesome video btw, definitely subscribing.
I say you've banned a majority of the over powered items. There isn't much left and I'm happy you took some inspiration from the video to apply to your server so I say you are set for a good challenge. Thank you for the support as well!
I would also recommend banning certain farms like guardian farms or iron farms because they’re VERY op. The SMP I’m on doesn’t and I don’t think I would enjoy the game as much if I had to go out and mine iron all the time but those farms are crazy op
ay, i know im not one of your friends, but I've been looking to play on an SMP that wasn't riddled with complicated plugins, or tryhard netherite-hoarders (due to the 1.20.1 update, almost all netherite smithing tablets have been stolen on those servers, and it's difficult to newly generate a bastion.) for about two weeks now. Unfortunately, none of my friends like minecraft, so I'm looking for any chance I can get. 'Course, if you say no I'll just keep searching, I just like smaller servers with a bunch of friends rather than randos I don't know.
Yeah I feel that, unfortunately it’s only for our school but good luck on finding a fun smp.

You should make video about raid farm it's very unbalanced but as a technical player myself it the best way to get ton of Redstone cuz witch hut is big nerf in 1.18
Fun fact: the fastest raid farm can make 2.2 million items per hour
I’ve made a tutorial on one
"if it isn't broken, don't fix it" ~~The story of minecraft updates since 1.8.9
Love your video, its so well made. keep up the good work
Thank you!
If mojang ever decided to rework raids there should be 2 evokers in the final wave in hardcore just to nerf raids cause it’s too op not saying I don’t like that there is to many evokers
that also may work but they can still be farmed
A solution that would be controversial but I'd highly appreciate would be to limit the effectiveness per time it's activated, have the effects last less, be weaker and eventually not even have effects, all of it leading to it just reviving with half a heart or 3 hearts, I feel like this would balance things out a bit
Also pvp is real easy, just go to servers where totems aren't allowed, that has to be a thing right? It sounds ridiculous to have it be allowed in PvP in the first place
So you’re saying a totem with exponentially decreasing power?
@@marcorgirg I like the idea it can't stack as an item, and that you can make a raid farm to get basically infinite amounts of it, so if it still drops from the mob each time I'd like it to be a world setting, the default being that each time it's used the lesser the effects are, and the lesser health you get
But if it is instead something you have to find, a rare place, hard but not impossible to triangulate, then have it be just one item that doesn't break upon usage, but it has durability and it can't be repaired, eventually prompting you to look for more, like the Elytra but without mending or repairing, anyway, those are my ideas
This is so on point, I completely agree
i feel like i just discovered a youtuber thats gonna have like 2 mil subs in like a week
What makes you say that?
Nice video! I agree that 1.14 made the game significantly easier, as it also brought easy trading for diamond tools, weapons and armour. I think that Mojang could have implemented 1.14 better, as villages did need an update, but totems aren't really rare, which makes them too op. I reckon they need to be non-renewable, like notch apples or elytra, because if they were made renewable they would be farmed (or perhaps making them very hard to farm like nether stars--perhaps a boss fight?)
I would say either make them only in woodland mansions or just make the evoker on par with the warden because as of now it’s way too easy
Great video as always. But one thing, From what i know ph1lza never liked totems and havent used them in his hardcore worlds exept to get the achievment. But im not sure tho,
That's an interesting point I didn't explore enough on. As well as thank for the support :)
I not go to mansion or found this, I doing raid farm well undying totem farm
Raid farms are too op
@@marcorgirg yes but if you doing nice just problem is vex and if you go to outpost in kill 4 leader give bad omen 4 thats give very totem and ı m doing this my hardcore world.
it didn't necessrily ruined the game... it just saves mc hardcore youtubers from crying😅
That also makes sense
That's why I love gringegull
First congratulations for 2k
Second, the totem give you a second chance in life also in hardcose only 1 life so that is reason why we make a raid farm for hardcose world😂
Thank you!
And yes I agree with the totems being in hardcore mode but the fact they are farmable is just not balanced
@@marcorgirg yea
Idea: when you use a totem, you gain the “undead” effect infinitely. All your items and xp also scatter everywhere as if you really died. While “undead”, you cannot use another totem. Milk can’t remove undead, only actually dying can, meaning it’s a 1 time use for hardcore.
I love that idea
Hardcore players fear none but removing totems from the game???
thats true LOL
crystal pvpers rn: 😭
LOL
i dont use the item, im too OG but I agree with your vlog, well done!
When is the new vid coming out?
Really liked this one that’s why i asked
Should be out within a week hopefully
@@marcorgirgOh man
One suggestion i have (Not sure how well this would work) is making two types of totems which are
Totem of Undying: Works exactly how it works but it only drops from Evokers in Woodland Mansions
Totem of Sturdiness: If an attack were to kill the player, the player would survive at half a heart and gain 30 seconds of fire resistance (So they dont get screwed over if its because of fire aspect or something like that) at the cost of not being able to heal OR use your offhand for 5-10 seconds (Preventing you from swapping to another totem really fast to use mass totems to survive). This would keep the main concept of the totem of undying, giving the player a second chance BUT since you're stuck at half a heart and unable to heal for a few seconds, it makes it to where you have to be FAST in a hardcore world as you only have your invincibility frames to save you, No regen 2, No absorption, and all it takes is just 1 more hit and you're done, This would be dropped by evokers in raids, archeology, and craftable using 2 emeralds, 1 quartz, and 4 amythest shards (To give more uses to the useless Amythest) I feel like this is a reasonable recipe to where you cant easily get it early-game but mid/late game, where raid farms are available, it'll be easy to get some without raid farms
If you know how to code I’d love to see that as a mod. It sounds super cool and much more balanced putting somewhat useless items to use
That name is so sus 🤣😳
Good vid
