  • The Fresh Prince of Bel Air means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. When it first came on the air, Will Smith and company took the sitcom world by storm. The Fresh Prince challenged what typical sitcoms were doing and provided commentary on vast array of social issues. Will Smith made sure that everything about The Fresh Prince of Bel Air would still be relevant 20 years later.

I'm a white dude from England and I grew up with this show too. Absolutley iconic. Will's dad episode always forces me to shed a tear. The original Aunt Viv was hilarious and kinda hot. Carltons dancing was hilarious. Uncle Phil was my surrogate dad. My real dad was an alcoholic and left early. Uncle Phil always knew what's what and always looked like he'd kick ass too. Ashlee was sweet and well, sorry I couldn't really relate and Hilary was one of my first crushes. Hearing Geoffrey on there was nice too because I could hear a familiar English accent.

Most 90s sitcoms like full house family matters ect are enjoyable to watch as a throwback but you can tell that they belong to a totally different world. As an Asian not living in the US, growing up and watching Fresh Prince was something I enjoyed for the reasons you shared. I did not fully understand the culture and what it is like in the US, but the show spoke to me in a level of what it meant to feel like an outsider trying to fit in but at the same time not wanting to lose your own identity. Where I come from, Hip Hop isn't popular compared to Techno, Jpop or Kpop of that era, and being Chinese and not enjoying those genres in favor of Hip Hop meant that I had very little in common with most of the kids my age. Fresh Prince taught me that being different came with its set of challenges, and despite those challenges, it reminded me never to abandon who I am, and that it was possible to be different, and still fit in as long as we're willing to put in the work and embrace one another. Thanks for making this video!

I think it's disingenuous to call it "trickery". A show starring and about African Americans became so incredibly popular among whites, and still the narrative has to be "but only because they were TRICKED into it". It was well received because of such things that were pointed out in this video. It was supremely genuine, down to earth, and original. Something people were starving for in an era of cookie-cutter sitcoms.
Face it: your viewpoint on racism is just as bigoted and forced as what you claim to oppose. And it will never, EVER allow you to see a path towards amending the racial divide. You only push harder and harder against it, frothing at the mouth and shrieking that no matter what they do, no matter what the context, whites will always be oppressing blacks.
Such lies only further alienate people and help NO ONE. It is 100% pure Marxist, divisionist propaganda - exactly like what happened in Russia between the classes... BLM's founders are self-described "trained Marxists", after all. One of their stated goals is to "abolish the nuclear family". That's bad news for the Banks family and all the values this show taught us....
There remain problems in our society, yes. But quit indulging in the hate-filled revolutionary rhetoric that will leave EVERYONE divided and controlled. You don't have to have a boogeyman or scapegoat group to make yourself feel morally superior. Look in the mirror and see that you have just as many problems as the rest of us.

You can tell there's genuine passion for what he's talking about, and a love for the show when you hear the tone of his voice shift roughly halfway through. It almost sounds to me as if he's about to get choked up from the subject matter alone.

Just started watching the show not too long ago and right now its one of the only things I watch on TV. It tells compelling stories with messages while most shows/movies nowadays just feel like soulless, in your face messages. It has personality and can connect with more than just it's target demographic while many stories nowadays invoke a desperate, negative feeling of attacking another point of view. Story tellers that attempt to convey messages and life lessons should take notes from shows like these and focus more on the story and base of the messaging then just the messages themselves.

My favorite show of all time, another great video idea could be how Carlton and Will's relationship grew over the series. The culture shock of you mentioned of Will being from the hood in Philly trying to get along with the preppy, spoiled trust fund kid Carlton. Originally Carlton struggled to relate to Will and would try to belittle him but secretly envied him ie: the basketball episode, and many more in the first couple seasons. But then they both end up loving each other for who they are as the series goes on ie: the series finale when both Will and Carlton dance to Tom Jones. Love your content!

The Fresh Prince was a great show. I loved watching it. You had commentary about the show, which pointed that so many shows were able to address social issues that same way that many other sitcoms were able to do.

My parents were Romanian refugees to America and had me watch this show growing up together and my dad looked at me and said "This show will last a long time." he was right. It was smart in making conversations about things that were uncomfortable but they knew how to do well with panash. The scene where he asks why his dad didn't want him makes me cry every time.

Fresh Prince is hands down my favourite TV show. It hits you on a comedy level first and foremost but then the emotional level hits hard and the lessons learned have changed who I am and how I think. I'm not old enough to actually be part of the Fresh Prince generation, but I watch through it on an almost annual basis. It's got me through some hard times, and with every watch through I spot an underlying message or a nuanced joke. A lot of people I know compare it to Friends, but they're nothing alike. Friends is just another sitcom that was more successful than most, Fresh Prince was completely different. I think the world needs a new Fresh Prince with everything going on right now, a platform to teach some positive lessons, not just about racism but everything.
