everyone was panicking, he was used as a "morale dummy", prolly in a hideout office made by him to look almost exactly like his old one, to prevent the Frontline from collapsing. Their defense was mainly psyop that barely even relied on geography properly (you'd need a geologist to understand the full advantages of defense/offense the complex valley offers, one with heavy field terrain experience, and the fallen regime did not have one, so the region's natural protection was unknown to them tactically & strategically)

The hardware can all be easily gone in a split second blinding flash.
The Panjshir Valley is named after the river that runs through it, with a road running parallel. Either side of that road are a thousand small valleys, gullies and ridges. It cannot be frontally assaulted and vehicles are unusable. It is perfect ambush country. Taliban seem to have cut the power and ordinary phone coverage so they know their claims will be hard to dispute.
