Just saw you for the first time...i will be 80 this November...It was a delight to see someone like you. I have been a collector most of my life...a few years ago...i consigned to a dealer friend of over 40 years several hunting rifles & shotguns...including five 99's...one in 300, 308, 243, 250-3000 and an old 99 in 30-30...it was a carbine cowboy model with a saddle ring. Guess what...I kept a 99 in 300 Savage...a 1947 model made in Utica NY...I feel the same way you do...love the vintage outfit!

Nice...... mine is from 1946 in .300 Savage. One of the last rifles shipped from the Utica, NY factory before they closed and moved to Mass. They made about 20,000 99's that year, while simultaneously shutting down parts of the plant and moving their machinery to the other site. Savage was the only WWII wartime contractor that consistently met their projected quotas in time, and were 80% ahead of scheduled delivery during the entire duration of the war; making various machine guns for U.S. Army Air Corps and Marine Corps bombers and fighter planes respectively. After the war, they no longer needed all the manufacturing space, so decided to close the Utica plant. It's cliche' these days to say, "they don't make 'em like that anymore", but these rifles fall solidly into that category. Mine is 73 years old, and is still my favorite hunting rifle after owning it since 1976. This rifle was designed to put meat on the table........... and it still does. God Bless America! Some day, we'll find our way back to the roots from whence we came......

    My 99 is a 1953 in 300 Savage.
I just use it for target shooting now.
I reload for and use a charge that is about 70% of max load.
This makes for an enjoyable shooting experience at the range.

Really enjoyed your video. Took me back to when my Grandfather hunted with his Savage 99 in 300 Savage caliber..
I have pictures of him hunting in the same coat as you are wearing.
I inherited my Grandfather's Savage in 1964. I was 13 years old. My grandmother gave it to me for Christmas.
I shot my biggest buck ever with it. It was a magnificent 5 point Mule Dear that I shot in my home state of Utah.
I moved on to Black Powder hunting in 1976 and retired the Savage at that time.
Several years ago, I quit hunting all together.
Just recently, I got back into shooting and reloading and found out about Trail Boss reloading powder.
I'm using this powder for my 300 Savage and my 1956 Winchester Model 94 in 30-30 caliber.
These are light loads for target shooting only.
Love shooting these loads and have enjoyed a renewed interest in shooting these old but faithful lever gins once again.

I have a bunch of them, a bunch to repair too. I do use a 30-30 T/D once and a while. It has a flip over scope on it. I have pulled the barrel and flipped the scope shot, and repeated up to three times at the range. It holds zero @100 yards. That just amazes me. I am sure all don't, guess I got lucky with that one. I think one of my favorites is my .303 Savage T/D since they started making brass for it again.

I had never even seen a Savage 99 until the other day when I traded a pistol for two rifles - and one of them is a 300 Savage 99!
It’s waiting in town at the gun shop for my background check to get done. Usually the BGC only takes a few minutes, but this time there were over 4,000 people in line ahead of me. But I’ll get it home in a week or two.
I’m really looking forward to bringing that rifle home. According to the serial number, it was made in 1941. Sure is a pretty thing.
The fellow who traded it to me said he’s had it for 27 years, and never fired it. I’m hoping to take a deer with it on our farm this year.

Bravo, beautifully done! I could have watched a feature length's worth of the B&W segment alone.
When i was just a gun-nut kid i had the Golden Guide to Guns published 3 years before i was born. I was enthralled by the images in there (not a plastic abomination to be seen) to almost he same degree as i was enthralled by the classic shotguns in my Granddad's closet, all of which were in that Guide. The most handsome firearm in the excellent little book in my prepubescent estimation was not a shotgun, however, but rather a Savage 99 DL. What a perfectly executed rifle! I am 56 and still have that little book and still think that Savage is the best looking gun in there. And in real time, too. NOTHING evokes the golden days of the hunting camp like one glance at a 99. I have not yet gotten my hands on a DL model, but i do have a 1950 EG and a 1953 model R, rare up here in Alberta. I had a third, another EG from 1955 with jeweled bolt but i sold it cos hey, how many does one man need? They're not making any more of these and it's better to share the love than to horde i reckoned. I hunt with both of the ones i have (i was hunting with the EG this morning), and like you i will not denigrate one of these rifles with a scope. Skews the whole aesthetic. And aesthetics are important in life. "When things are slow on the stand i like to admire the composite plastic of my rifle stock" said no-one.

@@TenXTimmyFinsFeathersFurs A buddy of mine when i pulled up the other day there he was with a freezer doe he'd just shot with his BLR in .270. They don't have the looks of the 99, but they are excellent guns nonetheless.
It's interesting thinking of the 99 and design in general. In terms of aesthetics. All the best looking rifles and shotguns were designed by the end of 1950 and by far most of them were around by 1920. There are many parallels. Cars and motorcycles, the very best of it had been done by the end of the 50's. (I was thinking yesterday isn't it interesting that the Savage 99 and the classic Indian Chief motorcycle had the same logo, the 99 being basically the Indian Chief of firearms! Those gorgeous sweeping, rounded lines.) Clothing, too. The 50's were the last days of men for instance dressing with class in their off hours (that is, when they weren't being paid to dress with class.) By the time i came along in the mid 60's we were on our downslope. Men in their leisure time started dressing increasingly like bums and even the 99 had seen its best days. Function began to trump form as dictated most often by cost. Housing the same, the best long done by the beginning of the 60's. Quantity over quality became the name of the game in all things. Make lots of it as cheap as you could. I am not so sure how many even think in terms of aesthetics these days. Thankfully we still have some reminders around from our golden days should we care to look.

I bought it in the Adirondacks. I put the question out on Facebook asking what folks would rather see. A video on the savage or the Remington. Back then "Bean Boots" would have been Maine Hunting Shoes. Not sure exactly when they dropped the name but mine were bought November, 1990. I think they changed over around 25+ years ago no doubt to appeal to a wider audience.

Great Video! Way to hunt off your back legs! The way it should be done, even if youre just playing! My Brother, Ive GOT to know where you got that cool as hell gun mounting set up for the top of your windshield inside your jeep! That old savage looks like it just belongs there! I haven't seen anything that cool since John Wayne passed away! Please do us like minded folks and right thinking Americans another video and show us where you got that mounting system and how you attached it to your Jeep! You would be welcome at my fire anytime! Thank You Sir!

@@TenXTimmyFinsFeathersFurs Thank you so much for the info! I have a 99 Wrangler Sport that we play with and i am a serious lever gun enthusiast like unto yourself. Ive got to rig up something like yours where my old vintage lever guns can ride up top like that. I literally hooted out loud when i saw that gun holder in your jeep! I ve been collecting and hunting with lever guns for over 40 years and have been fortunate enough to hoard 11 Savage 99s in various calibers. Good ones are getting harder to come by with every passing day. And, the prices are going crazy! You stole that one that you got! That was definately one of your best days! Your takedown 30-30 is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! Im kind of jealous! Ive been looking for its twin for a while now, i dont have one in 30-30. Thats something i intend to correct a s a p! "My gun vault is just like heaven, there will ALWAYS be room for a few more!" If youre comfortable doing so, shoot me your e-mail , id love to send you a picture of a 33 inch wide Idaho Mule Deer that i harvested a couple of years back with my 1915 era model 99 takedown in 250-3000. Its really cool to see someone else that uses and hunts with these old antique gems! Almost everyone that i encounter in the field is intrigued by my old guns. It has been wonderful to chat with you, take care. Keep up the traditions , my brother!

I’m also saving my $ for a hammer shotgun lol. I love the old ones too but may need to get the Cz model because I duck and goose hunt and need to be able to shoot steel. Excellent video. I agree with you the 99 is just a beautiful rifle. I'd like to have one in 250 Savage. People are modifying the chamber on a 250 Savage to a 25 creedmoor basically a 6.5 creedmoor neck down to 25 with the factory rifling it's good to 115 grain bullets and is much higher velocity than the original 250 Savage. Also the brass is very easy to get and they say it's very easy to load for. Tell me what you think about this? Thank you I appreciate it

Just came across your channel. Nice video. Looks like where I hunt in the U P of Michigan.
I first saw a 99 when I was about 14 when my uncle came up to our farm in north central Michigan to hunt. His was a 300. He knew I was doing all the shooting I could at the time. His had a scope with a dot. I had never looked through a scope before and could not keep the dot in sight. Said I would never use a scope on a rifle. Times have changed. Have bilateral macular degeneration and epiretinal membranes. Had to switch from right to left shooting. Open sights are just really hard to see. All my guns now have scopes.
Over the years I have had 2 308 99e. First many years ago which I sold for some other more fancy gun. Foolishness. Bought another several years ago but sold it to pay for a new transmission. Been looking for a replacement but prices are sooo high now. At a gun show yesterday a fellow had several 99s from $800 and up (the same fellow who purchased my last 99). They were all real nice. He likes nice firearms. In another rack I spotted some less desirable guns. At first I did not recognize one was another 99e. It had a plastic stock on it and the metal, except the lever, had been painted black with speckles. I looked closely at it. It seemed to function perfectly with a good bore. Was a "project gun" from a teenager. Just did not look right though. Talked with him and he sold it to me at a big discount. Still cost as much as a good one some years ago, but was far cheaper than a pristine model. Plan on restoring it. Now to fix my third 99 and if it functions and shoots it will stay. At 73 I must limit my hunting now. But still love old guns.
    Have a good day.
