Are you looking to design beautiful floral arrangements in small or oddly shaped containers without using harmful floral foam? In this tutorial, we'll show you how to use mesh wire as a sustainable and environmentally friendly base foundation for your designs. You'll also learn how to hold flowers in place even if you only have a few of each variety. With this technique, you can create stunning designs using any small container you have on hand, from ceramic swans and ducks to round bowls and crescent-shaped vases.
I’ve held back on doing this, thinking oh my goodness, how will I explain this considering its possibly 50 years since I last applied myself to the technique. Well, all I can say is the that the memories came flooding back and I’m pleased to bring back an old style and way of approaching floral design. The completed designs look amazing and need to return to vogue.
Gather your flowers, some chicken mesh or fine galvanized wire, wire cutters, and protective gloves, and let's get started!
Things to gather:
Whatever small container you have, could be a ceramic swan, duck, tulip or fan shape, round bowl etc or one of those lovely little elongated crescent shaped vases popular in the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s.
Flowers - dahlias, roses, camellias, spring flowers, just whatever you like or have on hand. The number will depend on how big your vessel is.
Chicken mess or fine galvanised wire.
Wire cutters and protective gloves - the wire can be savage to skin and hands.

This is precisely the video tutorial I've been looking for! Lovely instructions. Thank you for this video!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE your videos! Thank you very much
People don’t understand the scale of our extravagance, Astar! Haha! But this IS lovely, and chicken wire definitely seems like a smart thing to remind people of! I got to watch this video outside in my acupuncturist’s garden, and it was such a joy to view! Thank you, and I hope you get some good feedback!
You are such an enthusiastic teacher - love the end result ❤
What a great idea! I never would have thought to do that with chicken wire🤔you are truly a genius Astar
Love those yellow roses! Beautiful arrangement that I’m going to try. Thank you!
I remember my Mother using the frog to make flower arrangements. They work quite well! We still have them. The chicken wire performed great for you in this design. The shape and the mixture of colors and forms catches the eye!
Beautiful!!!
Love the chicken wire hit!!
I love your flowers arrangement , thanks again
Fantastical! Another awesome Astar design! That would look great on my dining room table! 💖
Great idea and love your design. Thank you.
Informative as always, thank you Astar
I’m not as delighted as everyone else with the chicken but the arrangement is beautiful, it was nice to watch
Lovely!
Gorgeous
Hello lovely Always a treat when I see your vids. Just your upbeat mannerism makes me smile and you always look a million dollars. I'm very much into anything sustainable and eco friendly. Good ole chicken wire, cant beat it. Since watching your vids my house has transformed into a visual symphony with my floral and foliage displays about the place and I thank you for inspiring me. Have recently fallen in love with silver dichondra hanging plants that I am propogating for an upcoming outside wedding to dress up a pergola. My question is...if you get a chance to respond. Is what white/greenish flowers would you suggest I could use in the center to take the displays to another level. Looking for something to compliment the dichondra that looks tasteful but elegant, sticking to the soft shades of green and white/cream etc. Love this arrangement you did, looks stunning and so yesteryear feel. Beautiful.😉😉
Oh my goodness I Found you again!!! Yay! These are just gorge! And thank you for showing us an 🌎 friendly alternative to foam👍🏻
Quick question: are theses fresh flowers or cloth? I see the 4th stem added to the vase (video time 7:24) has the stem that is bent back. Or are you bending the stems back to create pressure against the mesh? Thanks!
Hello, all the flowers are artificial. I sometimes bend the stem back, because I'm then able to reuse them in there other designs. Regards Astar
You are such an enthusiastic teacher - I love your design ❤
