As of writing this comment, ScareTheater was live streaming and I mentioned Casey's Cave to him. He said he was very fond of it as part of his childhood. He used to get around 20k views on those vids, which was surprising since he used to only get around 100. I then asked him if he had any of the deleted videos saved, and he said that he didn't. If he did, he wouldn't mind sharing them

One ARG I highly recommend is Minecraft Lilypad, or Minecraft Alpha 1.0.16 Versions.
It's an ARG about how Minecraft at a certain point had a branch of development, leading to other people developing the game in secret. At this point, the game version(that you can play btw!) is so wildly disconnected from Minecraft as a whole that it feels like a whole other game. It makes me so uneasy seeing these other mechanics, and textures, that look like they belong in the game but at the same time.. don't. It's like looking at Minecraft from a parallel univese. It freaks me out. I love it so much.

You say Herobrine isn't scary to us anymore but, whenever I'm reminded of him and I'm playing Minecraft, it sends shivers down my spine and makes me go slightly paranoid.
Same thing I'd say about Gmod dark figures tbh.

I agree with the points of not making "Minecraft Analog Horror", the medium just doesn't fit, but the route I've seen some more recent series take is the new route of "Digital Horror", similar in idea, but execution including Windows 7, XP, Movie Maker, Unregistered Hypercam 2, whatever else you can think of, it's there.

I think one of the reasons Herobrine was so scary compared to other creepypastas was the ability for it to happen to *you*. A common trope of other iconic stories like Sonic.exe and Ben Drowned was "I found this strange second hand copy of the game" or "my friend gave me a weird ROM". Herobrine on the other hand was ambiguous enough that a naïve kid could blame any unexplained glitches in the game as "herobrine is visiting me personally". Not only was it more believable because of the way many people online portrayed him (plus Mojang's sly references that a kid wouldn't understand is a joke), but it was a lot more intimate horror since it was a game basically everyone owned and he wasn't exclusive to a single copy. However I think the Achilles Heel of the myth dates all the way back to the original post, when it claims Herobrine is Notch's dead brother. Such an extremely specific claim could be so easily disproven (and in fact was when Notch tweeted that he had no brothers) which removed some of the potential credibility.

    • @Barakon

An easy fix was to Say that Herobrine was Loki's account of the game/minecraft insert.

I remember actually watching Casey's Cave as a kid. I'm pretty sure for a period of time, Scaretheater actually had the channel that Casey's Cave was uploaded to showcased on his main RUclips page, under that old "Channels" tab that used to exist, and that's how I found out that ScareTheater actually made Casey's Cave. It's a shame to see that it's become lost.

I had my little "Hovel Base" in the side of a hill, and inside, I had a staircase going down to just about bedrock.
I was mining along, and I could have sworn I heard blocks breaking close by, ones I wasn't mining myself. I shrugged, blamed it on sleep deprivation, and found diamonds shortly after.
In excitement, I ran back to the top of the mine's staircase, and back into my base.
All the torches had been replaced with redstone ones.

    Dungeons and Taverns
    From the Fog (course)
    Tectonic
    WF's cave overhaul
    Distant Horizons
    Macaw's mods
    Modern Industrialization
    Aileron
    Librarian's balance
    Eureka
    Immersive Weathering
    Majrusz's progressive difficulty
Another thing similar to error 422 is: Minecraft PS1 edition (yes they have already done analog horror)

as someone who's admittedly dedicated a huge amount of time to fnf, i can explain why people like horror themed fnf mods, at least partially.
See, its less trying to be scary (mostly), and moreso trying to represent the character or characters in question. Think of it like smash bros in a way. People are trying to make mods that represent horror entities they enjoy, whether it be old or new. That's the appeal. I personally got hooked onto modern internet horror via fnf and if it can do that to me, a fully grown adult, then its probs doing the same for the kids who'll write the next generation of horror stories and creepypastas methinks.

    • @MarcyTheKindaCoolWizard

Same, it's not so much being scary, as much as it's just trying a different aesthetic and genre and just have fun
Which ig is the whole point of fnf mods (or at least it should)
Grab a concept you love and run buckwild and have fun with what you can male
      What songs you can compose
      Fun designs
Maybe a story if you feel daring enough
Sure it might not be "scary" but thats not the point!

Always seemed like such a convoluted method of telling a story.

The occasional delayed footsteps that come from behind you, the weird terrain generation or the random two block structures in the distance that are distorted enough to the point where it looks like another player. -Do you remember the plot of maybe the first few episodes more clearly than the filmora descriptions?
-Do you have any screenshots that you may have taken at the time of the shows release?
-(beating a dead horse with this one) do you have any footage by any chance from back in the day?

@@DjDeadpig I remember the plot involving Casey being the victim of some heinous crime, resulting in her death, and her haunting the cave as a result. I don't remember if the incident happened in the cave though. I know there were police characters and such, but I don't remember they were in Minecraft or not.
I do remember a plan for her spirit to gradually extend beyond the cave, like an SCP or eldritch abomination, messing with the game and real life as well. Iirc elements of this were introduced at the end of season one (like, episode 11 or 12 I remember a twist/reveal).
I have no screenshots, and never took any, because I expected the series (and youtube as a whole) to have wayyyyy more longevity. I stopped watching for like 4 - 6 months and next thing I knew it was cancelled lol.
As for footage, I don't have that either, but I think Eric might. Your only hopes are to A.) Deep dive into search engines and pray, or B.) Get ScareTheater's older community members to spam Eric about it.
ECWGaming remained for a long time after ScareTheater got a shoutout from WatchMojo and blew up. ECWGaming was a freshman high school thing, and had a decent amount of subs (potentially up to 15k, which was very big in 2013). It was part of a community of channels like FOEGaming, a bunch of high schoolers shouting each other out and forming a makeshift community similar to early youtube with machinimas/AMVs. I imagine Eric has very fond memories of it like I had, and had the videos privated for a very long time until the deletion of the channel. There is a high likelihood the videos are archived, given that it was his channel's magnum opus, and a large inspiration behind ScareTheater. Casey's Cave was really blowing up before it buckled under its own ambitions (the story of the internet). In fact, I would argue that Casey's Cave was the death of ECWGaming, as the channel gradually stopped making gaming content during and after the series.
EDIT: I just found out Eric has confirmed he has no archives of the series; bummer.
Finally, I want to make it very clear that I didn't feature in any episodes, nor was I involved in any major decisions. I am a former friend of Eric's (nothing happened, I just moved on). We even collabed at one point. I was a candidate for voice acting in the series, and ultimately wasn't selected because I was too busy in real life. I believe I auditioned for a cop or paramedic role.
Hopefully this lore dump helps you on your search. The memories Notch gave me as a kid during the 1.0 era are very important to me, and remind me of what life could become again. The truth is I likely won't experience any of it again until I'm in heaven. Have a good one, and remember that no matter how fast or confusing something may be, cherish it, because once it's gone... it's gone.

Herobrine is a name i havent heard in so long that it gives me nostalgia, the creepypastas of minecraft are some that are unique, and the way they evolve is so amazing to me, how it all derived from one image. Herobrine, or the white eyes ig. All i can say is that the creepypastas have come a far wqy and have evolved into something really great.
The way it evolved as well is really interesting, for example, herobrine was a hoax about a ghost, a supernatural being with unknown intentions with that spiraling into phycological horror of e.g dont look at the moon which shows mental deterioration.
Thats all i can really say, although if i were to recommend an ARG it would have to be Andregaming667.
It perfectly captures the old school minecraft creepypasta presence whilst mixing in moral standpoints and emotive works.
