  • A female bristlenose pleco enters a male's cave and starts eating the eggs that he's caring for. He tries to make her leave, but has a lot of trouble convincing her to get out. The male bristlenose shivers, hyperventilates, pokes her with his cheek spines, and hits her with his tail. Still, she refuses to leave and continues to eat the eggs. See the drama unfold in my bristlenose pleco breeding tank.

Yes, this male seems to be quite polite.
Second option is that lady pleco doesn't want to eat eggs. She may try to clean them, however such behaviour is rare among females. Sometimes, really rare, they take care of abandoned eggs , cleaning them that way

This was fascinating to watch. As hard as the male tried to run her off, the eggs themselves seemed to also self protecting. I’m sure she got some, but it looked like hard work for small reward. Our young male appears to have taken up a more defensive position after clearing her away from his brood. Their hatching would be interesting to see. Thanks for this beautiful film Dave.🖤🇨🇦

Wow! I watched your wonderful video of how you video this with this turtle type cave. I set up a aqurium similar but I offered another closed cave and he chose it instead. But, I did get a Very large spawn. I had to separate the male so the pair didn't spawn again. The little babies are adorable!! Just wish I had a way to sell them because they are very difficult to keep their aquarium clean as they are growing larger. I must say the Male is a very good daddy and took care of the babies well. They are all albino plecos. Absolutely amazing how these fish raise their own!! Blessings ❤

I'm thinking that cave is too big if she can get inside with male and chomp away. I use the terracotta water spikes, it's easier for my male to defend. I have also removed the male and his clutch to a breeder box to avoid problems with corydoras wanting to sneak in and eat the eggs.

Pleco father must be protective suspecting everybody for wanting doing bad things to eggs and babies. However it's very rare that lady pleco eats eggs ! Only if she is starving ... More propable is that female on the video is trying to help babies to hatch. She may be inexperienced yet, she wants to help too early. Perhaps she suspects that male doesn't provide them right nursing? Who knows. Such behaviour is pretty rare too. Some females is capable to do it.
