- 16-year-old Starr Carter has her feet firmly planted in two different words - one foot at home in her predominantly Black neighborhood, and the other at her mostly white Prep school. These two worlds do not mix - until Starr witnesses the murder of her childhood best friend, Khalil, at the hands of a police officer. Suddenly, the lines between these two worlds become blurred over questions of justice, identity, and equality. At its core, “The Hate You Give” is a coming-of-age story: Starr navigates her place in the halls of her high school, grapples with her first love and broken friendships in ways we’ve seen before. Thomas masterfully uses the familiarity of these Young Adult themes and first-person perspective to tell a more nuanced story -- one made infinitely more complex by questions of race, tragedy, and shifting cultural viewpoints.

@andrewstevenson118 It was one of my O Level English books over here in England from back in the day, and the one that hooked me on Ray Bradbury. The film is excellent too.
@@TheDiamond2009 Kiwi here. I haven't read anything else of his. But he seems to get quite a bit of hate. I have no idea why. I looked it up recently when I thought of the joke just to ensure I remembered it correctly.
@andrewstevenson118 My best ever holiday was a trip to NZ - mainly south island, but also Wellington - for a wedding of a guy we befriended over here in the Isle of Man, a Kiwi who joined our cricket club. And his best friend from school is Stephen Fleming, who we went out with one night. Fantastic trip, memorable.
I’d recommend Bradbury, and I loved his short stories, if you can get hold of a copy - just great stories. I’m not sure why he receives hate.
The definition of courage is being scared of something, and doing it anyway. I use it in my own performance, and I teach it to my music students all the time in reference to performance. ☺️

@fredgarvin1952 I’ve been tracking this on another device with my own posts. There seems to be a disruptive element to it, in order to stifle exchanges, to cut out legitimate and accurate responses to inaccurate statements. The reason for that is obvious, and it only ever goes one way.
I’ve also noticed that an awful lot of comments that are demonstrably true, which are proven, but which run against the narrative, are shadowed. They don’t want their viewers to see fact-based statements. As someone one said, it’s not misinformation they want to censor, it’s the truth that they fear.
I wonder if this gets through?!
I'm not for banning books, unless there's a good reason. Peddling overt sexuality to young children, racially charged accusatory non histories and leftwing woke idealologies are not needed and cause more harm and division than otherwise..

I really enjoyed Angie Thomas’s book. I appreciate that she was inspired by Ms. Mildred Taylor’s Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.
Family and community was so important to both characters.
Angie should take some time viewing the thousands of police body camera videos that are now available. The overwhelming majority of hate you witness in these videos is against the police. When arrests go bad , in almost all cases it is because the suspect resisted or fought with the police. And Angie should acknowledge that statistically , a police officer is 18 times more likely to be killed by a black person than the other way around. She should consider what our major democrat controlled cities would be like if we did not have a police force. These blue cities would become even deadlier than they already are. The last thing any police officer wants to do is shoot anyone. Implying that the the police are wilfully killing people is both false and dangerous.
