  • “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” follows 9-year-old Oskar as he searches for answers after his father’s death in the September 11th attacks. It is part of a new literary canon of 9/11 literature - books used to dissect the trauma from that day. At its core, “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” is a story about grief. The singular, all-encompassing abandonment that only the death of a parent can create, and the shared, bewildering cataclysm that was and continues to be 9/11. Oskar is mourning the loss of his dad and the gaping hole in his city -- his home. For Oskar and the United States as a whole, 9/11 meant a loss of innocence, a shattering of safety, and a visceral reminder of mortality. “The point is not to create definitive versions. The point is to metabolize. That’s what literature does. And frankly, that’s what the conversations about literature should be doing,” says Safran Foer. “We live in an incredibly problematic, scary, oftentimes tragic, oftentimes really beautiful world.”

With many, many libraries now offering e-book library cards to anyone no matter where they live, these ill advised book ban efforts are doomed to failure and justifiably so.

"Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" (along with "Catcher in the Rye") is one of my favorite books--a real page turner. I think using a young voice as the narrator strikes us in a more visceral way as it allows us to go back to our own childhoods and feel that angst and vulnerability.

This is an awesome segment, Ali. The way the author describes writing and his the world needs more writers is so timely. We need to cultivate creativity and expression in our youth. They need competency in this area, as well as science and history. As you and Safan agree, these are challenging times, and we need to have ways to process incredible events and rapid change. Reading and writing are two of the simplest, most human, that we have to do this. Much respect to you both! 💜📚

Mr. Safran didn't mention the film, so I don't know how he feels about it. I didn't realize this was a book. It crossed my path a few years ago and I started watching. It's a quiet film, and I found it engaging from the start, beautifully done and with many special moments. And a top-tier cast of actors.

I watched the film after having read the book. IMHO this is one of those cases where the book is much better than the film.

@@PleaseDontEatAnimals Yes, that's often true, and depending on the book, it probably can't be helped. There are so many differences between the two genres, and different challenges, as well. I did like the film very much, though.

Books can not be killed by fire. People die, but books never die. No man and no force can abolish memory... In this war, we know, books are weapons. And it is a part of your dedication always to make them weapons for man's freedom.

Im sorry but I am still having a hard time with 9-11. I still cant watch the towers falling anymore than I did on the first day. It is so hard for probably BC I was in SF at the time. The day after it happened the headline on the Chronicle was,"Does San Francisco have Disaster Envy". The poultry turnout in Union Square for the firefighters in NYC... That day I decided to move back to Chicago. I think bc I was in SF I never got a chance to grieve with the rest of the nation. I didnt get to be with my brothers and sister's of our great nation. I got nothing. And so I went back home. In fact, "I was born very far from where I am supposed to be, so Im on my way home." Bob Dillon.

I think that this is such a wonderful idea for identifying books others are frightened of, and to take this topic head-on regarding banned books. This ensures that as a liberal democracy we are open to ideas, to areas we may have difficulty accepting, and most importantly understanding our own internal biases, our own iceberg rules, that limit our insight and foresight.

Again, we hear nothing but propaganda out of those networks. The book is available in libraries. Students can obtain a copy of the book should they so desire. The reason this book is ‘banned’, Is that it is not allowed to be used as a reference in class. So they are in available but because of some of its content it cannot be referred to as literature in a classroom setting.
