Hello from a Bulgarian in Seattle! My eyes were filled with tears.... can't explain it, thank you once again proving the class of your radio station and the appreciation for music as art!
The first one of these tracks, performed by Valya Balkanska, was recorded on golden disks and flies into the cosmic space on the Voyager 1 & 2 spacecrafts launched 1977!

Mehmetyo to me is a reflection of voices that sounded before your life and will continue echoing after you. It's chaotic, it may be dissonant at times, but it adds up into a beautiful choir, beautiful harmony of human life. It's real, it's here, it's ever living and breathing.
Here is a magnificent culture, these ambassadress of bulgarian culture heritage show us how deep and wide is the art of singing in Bakans. in each country, several styles and sensitivity gather to define an exceptionnal artistic identity ! The second musical piece reminds me some classical compositions of Kodaly and more, from Bartok himself in an atonal sheets music . It is fundamental to sing perfectly in tune in such a musical score ! So congratulations to the full ensemble, and each one of these precious and far gifted women.
I can only just imagine how beautiful it must be to hear these beautiful singers in person, without any kind of Digital processing in the way to mask the natural harmonies and resonances that some digital audio compression remove as they consider them to not be heard by the Ear (this is how MP3 makes music smaller in part, by removing sounds it algorithm thinks we can't hear). I had a similar experience by seeing a 2 hour performance by a group of Taiko drummers (Japanese drums you must check out!). Now I've seen a lot of Taiko on RUclips, but when you hear it live, you don't just hear it - you feel it in your entre body, the way the huge bass drums make your chest cavity vibrate!! It also helped of course that I saw these drummers in a proper acoustic environment in a large concert hall in Nottingham UK, It was *mind blowing* Check out 'Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers' on YT!
Thats amazing. I am fellow subscriber from Bulgaria and am stunned to see notification of KEXP podcast with Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares. Thank you for giving platform for these voices and our folklore music. Your interest for wide variety of music is incredible. Thank you, with love
Exactly my opinion too! I know a lot of folk consider the average American to be somewhat .. Insular ... in their understanding of the world and geography even, but KEXP have always shown a deep understanding of the musical culture of the world. I consider myself to be quite worldly in my appreciation of music, heck I used to brag that (as a British citizen) my 8Gb iPod was full and there was not a single track sung in English on it ,,, but KEXP have often shown me music that would have never even occurred to me. I love them!
I first heard this song around 12/13 years ago during a concert in Ottawa. Never heard since tonight. And I remember it so, so well…. Magnificent. Unique.

How dare you insult someone else's culture like that? You don't understand it- fine, it's not your cup of tea- fine. But going like that insulting people who have worked so hard to pull this thing off. You have no clue how hard this is, I have tried it myself- to sing a song in layers with other people. And most of all, this is not your culture, not your country, not your traditions. So you have no damn right of acting like that. You should be ashamed of yourself. Maleducato!
@@setaraynova5574 I could be wrong but I think Marco meant this as a compliment to the music, not an insult. Who knows, but that's the way it sounds to me.
I listened to this while high and had to return to confirm if what I heard was legit or not. Some of the best music I've ever heard
I'm doing it now

For the people who are saying that the music is weird:
It's not weird, it's just not your culture.
e, точно тоя аранжимент си е пълно извращение, няма кво да говориме :D

This is exactly what I think nature's spirit would be. Full of chaotic harmony.
This music speaks straight to my soul. I really didn't realize how bad "popular" music is until i heard real music like this. Thankyou

Those microtone harmonies damn near melted my face off
Maybe the are just singing minor secundos? Are those microtones?
@@kevave54 you're right. They make a large use of dissonances especially with second, seventh and ninth intervals.
This is not a tempered scale so it’s not a minor second.

Bulgaria has had seven kingdoms,
They and their conductor are so clever to have pulled this off.
Wow! respect!!

I bet the second track is what Shinji heard during Instrumentality
weirdest choir song ever ...but holy cow these CHORDS
Creamshaker choir? this is more "ethnic group music" than choir
what makes it a choir as well
