Funny as I put the VM34s back on my XS650 Wednesday and took it for a ride Thursday, even though I had run them before with no problem it was stumbling all the time, thinking it was rich I raised it up one on the needle, it made it lots worse so dropped it down two and its now running great!

There's an old saying that 90% of carb problems are ignition and 90% of ignition problems are carb. Something like that anyway. I had issues with my little CL175 thought it was carb but when I stripped the old rubber insulation of my HT leads and replaced with unreinforced fuel hose that cured it.

I've been watching you since I got my new "old Triumph" a few months ago. I had a 64 TR6R back in the seventies, sold in the eighties, and been on harleys and bought my Triumph this spring. It's a 78 Bonnie, it apparently had a rough life, many "odd nuts and bolts", evidence of stripping, poor mechanics, and it's been stumbling like yours, since I've had it. I'm really interested because you seem to have run across the bottom line, and as so many others have said: "90% of all ignition problems are carburetor, and 90% of all carburetor problems are ignition". Mine is suggesting "coil problems". I too have been with the "XS 650's" and compare my "Triumph experiences with Yamaha experience". I've really enjoyed tripping along with you, on roads and lanes I probably will never get to see otherwise. Thanks for sharing you many varied experiences! Are you still running with your crossover tube blocked, or have you reverted to the original setup? I'm really impressed with the improved "no stumbling".

Hi John, the TR6R was what Steve McQueen used in the Great Escape I think, great bike! Thanks for all the support and kind words, I really appreciate that! Since resolving all the issues with the Triumph I made one more little adjustment by moving the needle clip up one notch to make the mix a little more weaker and now that bike pulls like a train from the minute you open the throttle, no more stumbling or missing and starts on the first or second kick every time, I love it!

@@OldBiker Thanks for the reply, I just pulled my slides in my Mk II carbs and dropped the needles one notch, and will be testing to see how she runs. I'd blocked the crossover, and coked up the plugs, and reverted to stock, I really miss my TR6R, I love my Bonnie, 78, but it's not the same, more finicky. Thanks for the video, really great to watch here in the US.

Thats good news..... who'd have thought it eh !? coils are one of those things we rarely test and assume are ok but they can often exhibit intermittent problems that take ages to track down.
I had an intermittent cough and splutter issue under load on swmbo's Ford Focus that turned out to be a crack in the coils resin filla .
I thought I heard a regular misfiring or lumpyness when the Triumphs engine was on idle approaching the roundabout @5.00 and 8.30 i expect that will be sorted when you sync the carbs.
