  • You know, it would be nice if one day Sega released a new version of an older Sonic game, and it was actually a worthwhile version.
If you want to know what the deal with the coins and rings is, check out my Sonic Was Always Good series. You'll find the answer there.
Wanted to get this out as quickly as possible to let people know what this thing really is. I don't want uninformed people wasting their money on it. Sorry for the slightly clickbaity title. But I really wanted people to know this review is from someone who really knows these games.
I learned there actually is a time attack mode of sorts. You can play levels from the leaderboard. But there are tons of issues with how the game records times. Time Attack in this game is actually totally botched.
Here's a link to a spreadsheet I put together compiling all of my Sonic recommendations.

Stealth from Headcannon has confirmed that the game was in fact rushed. And Sega introduced many additional bugs to the game when they integrated it into Origins. They apparently requested to delay the game, but were told no. Seems Sega still has not learned the lesson from Sonic 06 that refusing to delay a game to hit an anniversary is a terrible idea.
Edit: It's also come to my attention that even the other games have new problems. Tails' AI is broken in Sonic 2 and CD's ending is messed up with the Japanese soundtrack. And I'm sure there's even more problems. What a disaster.

I’m so confused that not a single person has mentioned how utterly ruined the ending of Sonic CD is in this collection (at least the Japanese ending). The final cutscene runs at double-speed with all of the original sound effects completely missing. A mistimed Cosmic Eternity plays out of sync with the action, totally destroying the intended tone and pacing of the sequence. How did they let that happen? They literally nailed it back in 2011, with the only issue being the missing lyrics. Now the lyrics are back and they somehow screwed it anyway. The version in the gallery is even more butchered 😓

    • @jadonh
      @jadonh 2 года назад +4

I KNEW something seemed off with it! I was used to the mobile version from 2011, but I just thought that maybe they slowed down the ending cutscene it for the 2011 version of the game because they couldn't use the vocals for the music. Bummer that it's actually an issue. I wonder if the cutscene in Sonic CD's Visual Mode is correct. I'll be sure to check as soon as I unlock it.

Christian Whitehead and his team are not to blame, SEGA did not grant them nearly enough time to finish working on this game. If you ask me SEGA should have had Christian Whitehead and his team work on every game in Sonic Origins and give them more than sufficient time to complete the game. Screw you SEGA.

Here's some stuff I personally noticed after only a few hours of playing the game:
    1. All the music for Knuckles' Chaotix is labeled incorrectly. Stuff like the invincibility theme being called the act clear theme. As one of the 3 Knuckles' Chaotix fans, this is particularly disheartening.
    2. They seemingly cut a feature. Pre release footage showed a plus symbol above Sonic on the character select screen. It was probably just a toggle for his special move (drop dash, peel out, or insta-shield) or to choose between his original or 3&K sprite sheet.
    3. The replacement music in Sonic 3 sounds worse than it needs to. The versions in the leaked prototype from last year sound more lively (and more complete in my opinion) than the versions in Origins.

    • @inactivepleasegoaway

Adding to your recommendations to alternatives to Sonic Origins on PC, there's also Sonic CD Restored, which is based on the mobile decompilation of Sonic CD's remaster, but as its name implies, it restores many features and aspects from the original Sega CD release while keeping the improvements of the remaster, touches up the graphics, sounds, better FMVs (though not as improved from Sonic Origins but touched up from the Steam and mobile releases), adds the ability to use the original time travel concepts into the game, includes the Drop Dash from Sonic Mania, and after an anniversary update, adds Amy Rose as a playable character all while remaining faithful to the original game's. It also has a couple of fan-made add-ons that expands on Sonic CD Restored even further with additional music tracks (some of which that adds unique Past themes for the US soundtrack), improved music quality, the ability to customize the game's soundtrack to your heart's content, a plethora of tweaks and options, and also adds in Knuckles into Sonic CD.

All the cheats for the games are online (various level select codes at the "press button" screen of each game and then sound tests to unlock emeralds and debug modes) except for Sonic CD, where the cheats seem to be locked (just like the mobile port). Bonus note - if you do the Chaos Emerald cheat twice in S3K (04, 01, 02, 06 - it's the same in all three main series games) you unlock all 14 emeralds and Hyper Sonic. I also felt it was extremely easy to get coins from missions as they gave you way too much so it’s easy to stay at around 900 coins. I also feel like they could’ve had more fun with the coin system like for example they could’ve had the player pay 150-250 coins to make the speed in the blue spheres special stage cap at half the normal speed or use coins to unlock other characters that should’ve been in the game like Amy, Mighty, Ray, and even the chaotix because if they’re able to add new sprites they can add new characters. Also if there had to be a choice between team drop dash and insta shield, I would easily go for drop dash, makes everything better besides bosses which I’m really confused as to why they’re in time attack but not in mania.

The amount of problems this game has in unbelievable. Not being able to jump up to certain platforms effected me trying to jump up for the last big ring in Hydrocity zone 2, it can't be done by sonic alone. And for collision I fell through the sand in Sandopolis z1 and died as if it was a drop.
But I have played nearly 200 blue sphere stages in new mode and it is full of problems. For a start the ring counter is completely wrong in the majority of stages rendering a minority of them impossible to perfect (thus the difficulty rating can't be reached.).
The quadrants were not properly designed to actually match up together at random so every now and then a couple of quadrants come together which are completely incompatible, whereas the original blue sphere quadrants could match up (with the exception of two but they were still doable).
And when completing the blue sphere stages with sonic and tails in-game tails doesn't bounce on the springs, he just slides along, something that was very rare in the original and dependant on where sonic landed on the spring.
Plus I am not happy that they play like Mania blue sphere as opposed to Sonic 3 &K because they are less versatile.
And something that really annoyed me about the Sonic 2 mobile port was the end of special stage 3. You should be able to run in between the final two bombs but you couldn't on mobile. I hoped they would have fixed that for this but they haven't.
And the prototype music was disgusting. No tune or character, don't fit in with the rest of the soundtrack and they should have made entirely new, interesting soundtracks for those stages.
I am glad that the game exists but I wish it had been half the price.

There was a lot of content in Sonic 1, 2 and CD on Android/iOS that was cut out entirely:
    - Multiple Save Files. 6 for Sonic 1 and 2, 4 for Sonic CD. You're forced into one file per character now in all 3 of those entries.
    - Stage Select after completing a File. Meaning you need to collect the Chaos Emeralds/Time Stones in one go and will need to delete your save file if you want to go back and play a game with that character.
    - The ability to toggle Spin Dash on/off in Sonic 1 Anniversary Mode.
    - Lack of option for the 7th Chaos Emerald and Super Sonic in Sonic 1 Anniversary Mode.
    - Lack of option for Sonic and Tails pairing in Sonic 1.
    - Lack of Special Stage Retry option in the pause menu when you know you make a mistake in Anniversary Mode.
There's probably more I'm missing, but these are some huge ones I noticed and the fact they were taken out makes me pretty salty tbh.
There is also bugs with Blue Spheres where the music itself doesn't accelerate the longer you're in it.
Then there's a lot of no brainers that could had been added:
    - Elemental Shields in Sonic 1, 2 and CD.
    - Knuckles in Sonic CD.
    - Sonic & Knuckles pairing in Sonic 1, 2, 3&K, and CD.
    - Knuckles & Tails pairing in Sonic 1, 3&K, and CD.

I was wondering if the reason they made the jump work for only two buttons was maybe because there’s now a dedicated Super Sonic button and maybe they wanted to keep the games to a 3 button layout for the sake of authenticity. Still, I would’ve preferred the option to use all three bottom face buttons to spin dash

    • @bradenhogan2
      @bradenhogan2 2 года назад

@@dayzovc starting with Sonic 3, you had to press jump twice to activate Super Sonic. This is how it worked in the mobile ports which only allowed for one button input plus the d-pad.
The problem with doing that in this collection is that now we have the drop dash, the S3 insta-shield, the S3 elemental shields. So if they made it how it was in the mobile ports, you either would’ve had to intentionally lose your shield (like in the original S3) or you wouldn’t be able to use the shield abilities without turning into Super Sonic. So they made a dedicated Super Sonic button like how it appeared in Mania.
I’m just trying to figure out why they wouldn’t have let us use that fourth face button as a jump button like how every other classic Sonic game had three jump buttons. The only thing I could think of is that they wanted to keep it to a 3 button layout since the Genesis had 3 buttons.
However, I was messing around with debug mode in it yesterday and notably, all of the face buttons are used in debug mode

At 10:01, I noticed you had a little "Wut?" note where Tails dropped Sonic, but that's always been a thing since Sonic gets essentially pushed out of Tails' hands. (I think it was a thing even in the original game, but it's been a while since I played it.
Strangely enough, I didn't notice the speed increase in Sonic 3 and Knuckles, as someone who has played the original plenty of times in the past, but I may have just been taking it at a slower pace than normal. Though, I did have some weird super-speed boosts related to the drop dash sometimes. I don't think it was specific to any game, but I can't remember.
I played through the story mode with a cousin of mine, so I never had problems with Tails because, well, someone was playing as Tails. And I didn't have any other crazy glitches besides once glitching out of the boundaries of the casino bonus stage in Sonic 3, which soft-locked me because you can't quit the game from a bonus stage. Thankfully, the game saves where you were down to the checkpoint, so I was able to completely close the game and go back where I left off, but that DEFINITELY needs to be fixed. (I never encountered it in the original version of the game, but maybe it's present there too. I'm unsure.)
I really liked the game regardless of the glitches I encountered every once in a while, however. Seeing all the new Sonic 3 sprites and even the new Super Sonic theme made me extremely happy. (I did opt to turn off the game's music and play the original "Ice Cap Zone" theme though when I got there since that's really the only song I missed from the original.)
Also, I think this is one of the only ways to play Sonic 2 where player 2 can fly as Tails. Maybe that doesn't mean much to some people, but I've been dreaming of a feature like that for years to make the game more fun to play with my cousin. (Still bummed you can't play as Sonic and Tails as a duo in Sonic 1 even though you could in the mobile version, though.)
EDIT: Just found out that you CAN play as Sonic and Tails by accessing level select in Sonic 1! I'm glad it made it in the game after all!

Bizarrely, the drop dash works naturally with no roll lockin' on the SEGA AGES version of the game.
My guess is because M2 worked on this game from the ground up so they made sure to polish the elements up.
But the fact they had no widescreen torpedoed the prospect of having them included Origins.
(Tho' other compilations have various versions of the same game on the cartridge which I'd rather have than Mirror mode)

    Hype for Project-06 Silver release!
Also, does this version of Sonic 2 have the issue where Asterons have a bigger range of activation? Like in the original, the Asterons in the walls when you're running on the nuts to go up or down, would only activate if you panicked and tried to jump off the nut, if you just kept running they wouldn't do a thing. But in playing at least Sonic 2 Absolute out of defiance instead of Origins, I noticed the activation box is bigger. Is that just an issue with Whitehead's remake, since Absolute draws from it?

@@Pariah6950 That's what I thought. Still though, I think everyone prefers how they worked in the Genesis/MD version, Metropolis zone can already be a bitch, especially for newcomers, so it's weird that this compilation made for newer fans brought in because of the movies, would leave this functionality from the mobile remaster. Probably something on the CVS-receipt-length list of things Stealth and the Mania team wanted to fix but SEGA said "no fuck you and fuck our fans"

I dont understand how an anniversary game was rushed. That is stupid on Sega's part.
Also i really want to know what the MJ estate asking price for 3 almost 30 yrs old MIDIs was for Sega to replace them with horrible sounding ones.

This is a problem… that you fortunately can fix with the easily accessible Level Select code.
Once you’re in, change controls to “S2&3” and then your drop drash control feels like S3.

Thank you for keeping it real. I've seen so many RUclipsrs down play the issues and it's so frustrating. It's bad enough it's roms, but just how little they did hurt.
