  • Watch in High Definition! Take a ride on the point of the shove move from 8th Street Yard to Los Angeles Union Station! The Tioga Pass' open air observation platform really comes in handy for both the brakeman who has to ride on the point, and for those wishing to get an unhindered view on the point of a shove move. We finished preparations for departure from the yard around 10:20. Dave and Norm left to drive down to Union Station so they could pick some items up in advance. In the meantime, our train (572) headed for the station. With F59PHI 454 on the head end, we pulled south out of the inspection pits, past the fuel racks (a tight squeeze) and stopped on the yard lead. After obtaining permission from the dispatcher, we began shoving out of the yard and onto the mainline. We got up to a decent speed, but were slowed a bit by a Form B restriction along the tracks. Despite this, nothing beats being on the front of the train as you arrive in Union Station. We pulled into track 9 and stopped to await train 572's departure at 11:10 A.M.
Along the way, we passed several trains:
Train 1: Amtrak Sunset Limited/Texas Eagle train 2/422's trainset sits in the track next to ours in the inspection pits. P42DCs 17 and 68 sit next to the fuel racks.
Train 2: Northbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Train 565 passes with F59PHI 452 on the rear.
Train 3: A southbound Union Pacific Power move across the river. Led by an ES44AC with two SD70Ms trailing.
Train 4: In the foreground, southbound Metrolink Orange County Line Train 654 passes with F59PH 854 and Rotem cabcar 645.
Train 5: Amtrak Southwest Chief Train 3's trainset with P42DCs 144 and 116 passes in the yard.
Train 6: Southbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Train 768 passes at speed with a 9 car train. F59PHI 456 leads, cabcar 6900 is in the middle and F59PHI 451 is on the rear.
Train 7: Metrolink Del Mar Race Train number 6662 holds in Union Station for our train to clear. MP36PH-3C 891 and F59PHI 885 are on the point. Cabcar 635 brings up the rear. Our brakeman jokes with 6662's engineer about the train number.
Train 8: Amtrak 565's trainset sits at the station.
Stay tuned for the exciting ride to San Diego!

What a wonderful ride. I was fortunate enough to make the same trip from the yard, on the back deck of Tioga Pass, shoving up to Union Station, in August 2010. Watching your video brings back such happy memories. I also made video but really like yours. Thanks.

Been There, done That. Anyone notice the 'Puzzle Switch' in the Plant LAUPT ? The switches used to be controlled by compressed air. I see now they're conventional industry electric. Saw a guy in all orange jumpsuit jump the fence out of LA Men's Central Jail near the entrance to the plant as I was backing out. The problem was he was running between the rails never looking back so all we could do is just creep. Then 'Mission Tower' called us and told us that the Sheriff Dept had contacted her and said someone had just escaped. Well, yah, that was appearant. He finally got off the tracks and ran between some buildings. I see now those buildings are gone.
Well, most of what I remember is gone. Except my memory(lol). Thanks for reading my post.

@AllAboardModelTrains If you ride the Tioga Pass, you have the option of spending the night on the car (for an extra fee) in 8th Street Yard before the car and whatever train it is on are moved to Union Station.

@itsbk530 That's really cool. All the guys up at 8th street are really nice. Quite a contrast to most of the Amtrak employees in San Diego (though a few down here are really nice).

switchman on the point could also whistle if he has the right equipment back there, most private cars have their own, if their not required.

Trains must blow for a crossing unless it's a quiet zone. The loco must have been blowing and it was just inaudible in the video.

You can tour any cars you are coupled to if invited, but riding in them for long distances wouldn't be ok unless you were again invited to stay.

Do you get to tour the trains, or do you have to stay in the car?

Not unless you can find an Amtrak employee who is willing to give you a tour.
