The new communication system changes everything. Right now we only see still images or stitched together photos from mars missions because of low bandwidth. It takes days to beam back the data.
Dial up is a good analogy, if anyone remembers AOL and watching the screen load a picture for 5 minutes.
So far this new system has been successful and may potentially allow us to one day see high definition videos from places like mars.

    • @BadYossa

Dialup was positively speedy compared to first modems I used in the early '80's - these were as low as 300 baud or "superfast" at 1200 baud - yup 300 bits per second. My crappy, cheapo phone runs at 50Mbps by comparison.
Soz - off topic, but shows the difference over 40 years! Same goes for the tech used in Space exploration/Telescopes etc.

Elon Musk is in a unique position to figure out how to go after this asteroid, or at least a chunk of it.
Imagine if he were to retrieve 1% of this asteroid and bring it into Earth orbit. Then build a processing station to refine the materials and drop them down to earth chunk by chunk.
The value of this piece of asteroid would at least be several billion. That would pay for the trip. A detailed scan of Psyche might reveal gold/silver/platinum deposits. That would be the chunk to send back to Earth first. Some preliminary processing in situ would mean a higher percentage of precious metals in the first trip.
Use worthless material on the asteroid as ejecta for propulsion.
If he gets enough gold/silver/platinum it would affect the world price of precious metals. The price would drop. This means whoever gets there first would be the one who gets all the real profit. If Blue Origin got there a year later, the price of gold would have already dropped, reducing the profit for the trip.
Eventually, send some chunks to Mars for use by any future colonists as raw material.
Leave some in orbit for material used to create orbiting space stations.
If only Musk could get his hands on some robots, for doing tedious labor without direct human involvement...

Does Simon just not promote his own channels? I keep thinking I’m subscribed to all of his channels, and then I just happen to find another one!

Simon, the audio on this compared to Decoding the Unknown (both release today, but I'm sure produced separately) is hard to listen too. Feels tinny and low key grating in comparison. I'm partially tone deaf, so maybe its me.

Seems like there is a race going on who is going to reach 1 Million first, the Bitcoin price, or the number of channels that Simon has on RUclips..... :P

Hey! Got a better plan: Save $10 Quintillion by all getting together and mining and sharing the minerals on Earth per capita.

Well, if it pays off, it can pay off and spades. it’s an expensive gamble but if it’s worth what scientist believe it to be, it be great for mining!

What if Psyche didn't form in our Solar System and instead was captured by Jupiter's gravitational field while it was drifting through space?

Two things to keep in mind. The first is that the value of the material cycle is based on current Earth prices. So if psyche actually got here the materials wouldn't be as scarce so they wouldn't be a valuable.
The second is that the current price of moving something safely to orbit is about $10,000 a pound.
So it's more likely the cost of moving mining equipment to orbit and then safely getting the material back down to earth will dominate the cost. It would also cost a phenomenal amount to decelerate psyche and send it into the inner solar system. And it would be a fantastically dangerous object to have anywhere near earth. It would be the ultimate weapon.

What if we wait unti it’s as close to earth as possible, blow it up with nukes, then just collect whatever pieces come flying our way and just let the rest go

I've been thinking much the same things for quite awhile. There's also the question of how having such a source of (presumably affordable) metal at hand would affect the mining industry on Earth. Potentially tens or hundreds of thousands of low- to middle-wage earners could be impacted.

Any space video like this just make me shake me head at the world. Why are people waging war on our little miracle safe haven and not looking for ways to explore space and protect our planet from all the crazy shit that could kill us all instantly 🤣

Simon, as much as I love you, you really shouldn’t dive into politics in your videos unless they deal with it.
Morgan is hardly an idiot and you would be surprised how much cross pollination you may have with him when comes to audiences.
And alienating your audience is never a good idea when your very income depends on said audience.

It wouldn't be too hard to imagine that objects of a similar density, after an impact to end up in the same area and be affected similarly by a random series of events that were much more probable during the highly chaotic time of that areas timeline.
