Surfing is such an unique sport. WE all know that WSL needs to have 20 or 30 of the best surfers on the tour and that's all right for "selling the sport" or whatever. But they NEED to open a window for 10-15 NON-CT surfers on every location based on merit. For starters, make a fucking trials (or use a regular, already existing event at the same location as a trials) and get the best 8 or 10 surfers on the event. Get also one or two former champions, former event champions, the best ranked Challenger Series surfers and best ranked Junior Division surfers and also one or two surfers voted by the public and there you have it: pure entertainement. Every good surfer should have a chance to be in each event of the calendar.
I wish there was a way to A/B test ideas like these to see the difference. One thing is for sure, a final at trestles does not prove who is the best surfer in the world. Put them in 10 ft haleiwa and watch JJF separate himself from everyone else
