The Overhead Squat: Simple Yet Nettlesome

- Dave Eubanks of the CrossFit Seminar Staff details the overhead squat for a beginner.
In his 2005 CrossFit Journal article, “The Overhead Squat,” Greg Glassman notes, “There are three common obstacles to learning the overhead squat. The first is the scarcity of skilled instruction; outside of the Olympic lifting community most instruction on the overhead squat is laughably, horribly wrong-dead wrong. The second is a weak squat-you need to have a rock-solid squat to learn the overhead squat. We strongly recommend you review the December 2002 issue of the CrossFit Journal on squatting before attempting the overhead squat; you could save yourself a lot of time in the long run. The third obstacle is starting with too much weight-you haven’t a snowball’s chance in hell of learning the overhead squat with a bar. You’ll need to use a length of dowel or plastic PVC pipe; use anything over five pounds to learn this move and your overhead squat will be stillborn.”

"Turn towards the camera" [camera rotates back to the side] lol
I did four years of Crossfit and I never once did an overhead squat. I physically couldn't. I had no injuries but for some reason my shoulders were frozen. No range of motion for an overhead hold.
4 years and you couldn't work on your mobility and stretching?... With 4 years you should of been able to do it or attempt it
Not even with a PVC pipe?
I had issues until I started doing the shoulder dislocation exercises everyday.
Crossfit, why do all Olympic lifters internally rotate while we teach external rotation for the OHS?
Because most Crossfiters don’t have the thoracic mobility to internally rotate and keep the bar plane vertical. When your shoulders are collapsing forwards, external rotation is the only way to keep the bar up; less than ideal though
Alex Ramos thAnk you for the honest answer
@@Rommel1988111 incorrect. Think about pressing a bar overhead from a front or back rack. Are your shoulders internally rotated? No, you can’t press overhead that way. Also, regardless of what SOME coaches teach their athletes, watch videos of successful weightlifters and look at their armpits and elbows. What position are they in? They are externally rotated with significant load overhead. Also, it’s actually MORE difficult to get into external rotation at the glenohumeral joint when your thoracic mobility is lacking, so many beginner athletes squat with internal rotation.
Serious question: I switched gyms a while back, and now I'm at Planet Fitness, which only has free weights and Smith Machines for squats. If you did that lift on the Smith Machine, would it be as effective? Thanks in advance!
Never do this one on the smith machine. Your body requires it’s own movement path/motion.
Nice one guys! Gotta get my lvl 1 soon!!!
Perfect video I love it

The guy who does it wrong is all geared up in Nike hahaha nice one Reebok
