Synopsis :- A young English man is convicted of the murder of one Captain Hamilton of the Royal Air Force and sentenced to hang, His sister and her fiancé, convinced of his innocence, ask visiting detective Charlie Chan to investigate and find the real murderer. In order to solve the mystery, Chan must visit a lavish English country manor house, where the suspects vary from the housekeeper to a lawyer. Events soon indicate that the murderer is still actively trying to avoid capture, but Charlie Chan must set a trap to reveal the criminal's identity. He turns out to be Paul Frank, a spy masquerading under the name Geoffrey Richmond, who had murdered Captain Hamilton to steal plans of a military invention Hamilton had made.

Did they really think they needed to use a made-up county for the location of the estate? If they set a picture in the USA, would they place it in a made-up state? "The murder was committed on a ranch in Utaconsin". Or were the writers so ignorant of British geography that they thought Retfordshire was a real county? Also if someone claimed to be a Captain in the Royal Air Force, they would clearly be lying, as Captain was not a rank in the RAF (although I suppose it would have been in the initial days of the Royal Flying Corps, when it was still part of the Army - but certainly not in 1934). Nor was Major an RAF rank, although I suppose he could have served in the RFC during the Great War. I guess this movie was made in the USA, by folks who didn't actually know much about Britain (and couldn't be bothered to do much research). Maybe I'll watch Charlie Chan In Paris next, and see if that actually gets anything about France right. Not that this sort of thing stops me enjoying the movie - it's like listening to an elderly uncle telling a story, where you know that he's actually mangling most of the facts, but you still want to hear what he says happened next.

Somebody commented how with these Charlie Chan movies the character of a competent police detective and crime fighter did a lot to improve the image of the Chinese in the eyes of the American moviegoing public.
But there is more to it. The year the movie came out it was still when the We-don't-want-no-Chinamen-here law aka the Chinese Exclusion Act was still in force in the US.'
As a result, one can only imagine the problems a man like Charlie Chan might have had returning to the US from his numerous travels abroad, even with an unassailable American passport in hand.

Warner Oland did not die terribly "young". He played Al Jolson's Rabbi father in the 1927 film "The Jazz Singer". The first "talking" movie. The web indicates he was about 59 at his death.
When Oland died, it gave Sidney Toler a chance to take over the role. He also did a remarkable job.
I discovered that both actors did so well, that unless you are specifically looking, you never really notice the difference.
Did you ever see J. Carrol Naish play Chan? In the old 1950's half-hour B&W TV series "The New Adventures of Charlie Chan". Naish is a great, and versatile "character" actor. Usually playing "dark" roles. Perfect for the mysterious Chan. Actually Naish played a minor role in a full length Chan movie: "Charlie Chan at The Circus". Naish did a sensational job as Italian police chief, in the Peter Lorre film "Beast With 5 Fingers".

Mr. Chan fan here! I enjoy crime solving old movies such as Mr. Chan & Sherlock 🕵️ Holmes! Mr. Chan reminds me of Colombo (Peter Folk) with his non pretentious demeanor.

Its amazing to think that it was an era that digital wasn't a thing, that people would have to go to a cinema to watch entertainment

The murder was committed three months ago and they're ready to hang the guy? That's super quick.

In the US, they stall for 30 years, on average. One man was executed after 40 years, aged 80.😂😂😂

Love this movie. I think the actor playing the condemned brother was in "The Mummy" with Boris Karloff. He went mad when the mummy revived.

If you are an old movie buff, you will recognize the resl murderer as character actor Alan Mowbray, who played in hundreds of movies during that period
And of course , Ray Milland, who went on to be one of Hollywood's star leading
    men.

Warner Oland's my favorite of the 3 actors who played Charlie Chan!!! I love the way he puts the pieces of the crime/puzzle 2gether to arrive at the guilty party!!!
