    To those that think I’m actually pausing every 2 seconds…😅 - it’s literally cut so no I’m not pausing lmao I have to break up the video so that it doesn’t get blocked so that YOU can watch it 😊. I probably paused a total of 5 times in this 2 hour movie. Also not a bad idea to leave a video if you don’t like it.
    Thank you guys for tuning in with me as we watch this incredible series! Had a blast! I got so into both of these movies lmao and I know I didn’t get every single detail (and that’s okay) I was just enjoying the ride. Excited for what’s next!

      First time watching your channel. Great reaction! And I highly prefer how you stop to express your thought. There’s so many reactors who keep speaking over the scenes that follow for 10, 15, 20 seconds and COMPLETELY missing important dialogue or a critical scene because they’re too busy joking and bantering with each other, resulting in a reaction that misses the mark more often than not. The water of life unlocks the memories of your ancestors locked in your genetic code. Any man that drinks it will die, but women can survive it if trained. The Bene Gesserit do this to see the memories of their female ancestors but are unable to see the memories of their male ancestors, therefore they cannot see the future. For thousands of years they were crossing bloodlines( their breeding program) to create a male being that will be able to survive the water of life and see ALL of his ancestors memories , granting him full vision of possible future events. They also created fake religions through propaganda like the one on Arrakis to prepare the people for this.That man was supposed to be the son of Feyd Rautha and Jessicas daughter, but Jessia disobeyed the order and gave birth to a son, therefor the Kwizats Haderach came one generation eariler and slipped out of their control

    103:00, Two things are missing from this final scene.
    1) Thufir Hawat Duke Leto’s Mentat advisor actually survived the Fall of House Atreides. The Harkonnens captured him and forced him to work for them. In secret despite being brutalized constantly, Thufir was still loyal to House Atreides. So he found out that Gurney was still alive and started feeding Gurney information to hurt the Harkonnens spice trade.
    In this final scene, Thufir lives long enough to stand at attention in front of Paul and address him as “My Duke”. It is a bittersweet moment for both of them as Thufir was like a grandfather to Paul. Thufir died happy to see Paul live to avenge his father and reestablish House Atreides. He had served Paul's grandfather Paulus Atreides and then his father Leto Atreides. So with his last breath Thufir let Paul know "I'm still your man now and for always".
    Denis Villanueve did film this final scene but left it on the cutting room floor.
    2) Paul and Jessica letting Chani know that the marriage to Princess Irulan is merely political. They explain that Paul will never spend time with Irulan, show her any passion or sire children with her. The Imperial marriage is all for show. Paul basically marries her then goes home to Chani. They never mistreat the Princess but everyone knows that she is Empress in name only.
    David Lynch the director of the 1984 version of Dune actually filmed both of these scenes and they can be found on RUclips.

    • @TealJosh
      @TealJosh Месяц назад +1

      It's kind of crazy, knowing Denis, the second scene guaranteed was filmed to be part of the one after Paul drinks water of life and Jessica talks to Chani. Sad that it ended up on the cutting room floor.

    • @piratecat5113
      @piratecat5113 Месяц назад +2

      Lynch made Paul the glorious white Messiah triumphant with making rain fall down in the end, a freaking miracle, cutting any possible sequels to happen according to the books. He went totally against the writer's intention which shows it wasn't an adaptation, Lynch made it as if it was his story, he only kept the best punch lines.
      Here Denis filmed with Dune Messiah in mind. a short book and a dark one.
      Running time is a director's worst enemy.

    • @ScurrilousSpades
      @ScurrilousSpades Месяц назад

      @@piratecat5113i wouldn't characterize Dune 1984 as David Lynch trying to "make dune his own story" necessarily. If anything he seems to view the movie that came out as very much Not His Movie, he pretty much disowned it and he wanted to have his name stricken from the credits, and to this day he just doesn't want to talk about Dune in any interview. By the end of production the movie was far from what he had wanted it to be (and much shorter) to the point where he's gone on record to describe it as him selling out, and while there were plans for a Messiah movie the fact that Dune 84 bombed kinda nipped that one in the bud. (also if wikipedia is to be believed then magic lisan al gaib rain ending was not originally intended.)

    • @ScurrilousSpades
      @ScurrilousSpades Месяц назад +1

      someone even went so far as to make a fan edit that extends the movie significantly with the inclusion of those deleted scenes, as well as restructuring the movie to being a bit closer to the books. It's called the Spicediver edit, and its on youtube if you're at all curious to see what couldve been.

    • @piratecat5113
      @piratecat5113 Месяц назад

      @@ScurrilousSpades So in the end he wasn't the director of his own movie...How funny. he won't talk about it because he doesn't have the modesty to recognise that he messed up big time.
      If you love the books you cannot love this movie otherwise by itself it wouldn't be that bad if it was a separate original story.
      The strange modules, the Harkonens depicted like cartoon villains, Piter
      DeVries talked and acted like the Sphinx in Batman, Sting was a joke, the fight was a joke, the worms were a joke, the shields, the heart plugs, the maggot navigator, the French foreign legion Atreide foot soldiers, the costumes from a distant past and so on,. So how much can you blame the producers?
      Lynch had a fantasy world in mind, something unreal while Villeneuve always ask himself if the story was real then how do I shoot it as a real series of events. You can see that approach in all his movies.
      Lastly, the books were written with the scientific theories of the time reimagined thousands of years later, no magic, no miracles but most people don't get it., they want the freaking Star Wars magical universe.

  • @steelnation5110
    @steelnation5110 Месяц назад +5

    “Power over spice is power over all”
    I think that quote has 2 meanings. The first obvious one is that spice is essential for space travel and therefore the imperial economy, so power over that means power over the universe. The second meaning is a little deeper; spice itself comes from the sand worm and the Water of Life is basically just extremely concentrated spice. The spice’s “psychoactive” properties is what had helped Paul view fragments of his future (and how the spacing guild navigators find safe paths between the stars, by glimpsing the future), and the Water of Life gave him access to his genetic memory which unlocked his perfect prescience. So Paul’s “power over spice” unlocks his mind and essentially gives him “power over all” by seeing the future.

    Only women (trained) have the capability to see the past and future, have Bene Gesserit powers. This limited their abilities to see the future however. They needed a man who could access the visions that they could not.
    Since no man could naturally do it, they had to launch the breeding program. With the ultimate goal of creating a man with Bene Gesserit powers that could be controlled by the order.
    Jessica giving birth to a son instead of a daughter as ordered changed this (Bene Gesserit can control thr sex of a child). Had Paul been born a girl, she could have been breed to Feyd and their child would have been the controllable kwisatz haderach. But out of love, she gave birth to a boy. Paul ended up being the kwisatz haderach but he wasn't controllable by the order.
    This is the book lore of course. The movies did things a little different but it still gives context as to why this was all happening.

As for the b/w sequence in the arena, they shot it with an infrared camera to mimic the look of their world, which has a black sun, and to suggest that how they visualize the physical world in that state might have significant impact on their collective psychological makeup. Eh, I don't know that paul is a 'super villian' but he's not the hero. His son is the 'hero' if there is one, also a monster... I think that was Herbert's kind of final point. That messiahs are not good or bad per se...
    The Bene Gesserit are also neither hero's nor monsters. The future vision given by the spice allowed them to see that humanity would be driven to extinction. The breeding program the Kwisatz Haderach all of that is to guide humanity to survival. That omlet makes for a lot of broken eggs... Billions upon billions in fact, but humanity DOES survive... But the process is not pretty, nor is it good or evil, it simply is.

    Loved your reactions, fun to see the material excite someone the same way it did me many years ago. All your intuition seemed on the money to me, even things I see people explaining in the comments are some things I would consider to be open to interpretation in the book, and even then it took me several reads to get to the point I felt reasonable confident I understood things so was quite impressive to see how much you picked up on immediately.
    I've always loved Paul for the same reasons as you, and the tragic element of seeing things play out the way they do knowing how much he doesn't want them to is big part of why the story has so much staying power in my head at least. Paul pretty much lays it out at the start of the movie when talking to Alia "I'm afraid I won't have enough time to fix things before your coming. This world is beyond cruelty." Paul's actions can be criticized of course, but some situations aren't going to have happy endings no matter how righteous you want to believe you can act because the world is not just cruel, it is beyond cruel in its apparent absurdity and lack of cosmic justice. Love the way Dune is able to portray that reality while still having you rooting for and wanting to believe the characters can find a way to make things right.
    Thanks for sharing, the wait for next movie will be rough but should be worth. Florence and Anya's characters should both see increased screentime w/ a lot of potentially interesting material depending on how they decide to do the adaption which I'm personally most excited for.

    26:19, with Paul and Jessica we are talking about two people who have opened up their minds to be the vessels for the memories of generations of their ancestors to reside. Outside of the science fiction genre they would be considered possessed. Possessed people aren't exactly the considered the most reliable to follow.
    This isn't Jessica anymore and once he takes the Water of Life Paul won't be Paul anymore.

    • @hanna-hn4ri
      @hanna-hn4ri Месяц назад +6

      I think they are not possessed. They just have more knowledge than other people, know more possible future, realising more consequences. That's why their vision will never be the same as before, nor their way of thinking. When you are in a realisation of possible future while you are having a mission of revenge, you'll never be the same as before.

    • @LordVolkov
      @LordVolkov Месяц назад +5

      Paul, Jessica, and the thousands of adult reverand mothers before them do not get 'possessed' by their spice memories because they have a fully formed personality to keep them out.
      Alia and other pre-born don't have that, so they cannot separate their own memories from those of the most powerful egos in their collective. They are indeed 'possessed' by the legion in their heads.

    • @fernhausluv44
      @fernhausluv44 Месяц назад +3

      This is factually incorrect. Possession is talked about in the books, and only occurs when a specific ancestor takes hold of the inhabitant; specifically relevant in Children of Dune. Drinking the Water of Life enables the individual to be able to access the memories of a great number (its unspecified to my knowledge) of genetic ancestors. These ancestors do not 'possess' the individual, but they DO greatly influence and sway their actions through said ridiculous accumulation of memories.

    The movie really doesn't explain it but the Water of Life is basically super-concentrated spice and it unlocks a person's genetic memory, as in you get the memories of your ancestors. It's really no wonder that your personality would change from experiencing that.
    You know how the Navigator Guild needs spice to navigate the stars? They do that by using spice to see a few seconds into the future. So imagine giving super concentrated spice that unlocks the memories of all of your ancestors to someone who is the end result of a slective breeding program that has been going on for ten thousand years to create a being who can bridge space and time.
    Yeah.... Paul taking the Water of Life unlocked all of his abilities. He woke up with the ability to see into the past, present and future. All at once. Better yet his dad had him undergo Mentat training so Paul is basically also a walking human computer so he has the brain power to handle and organize all of it. Everything that you see Paul doing after he wakes up is the calculated path that he needs to do to come out on top.

    Some things are altered from the novel...
    - Alia, Paul's sister is born during the novel. Between the fall of House Atreides and the Battle of Arrakis, two to three years pass, and Alia is born with all of the knowledge of a Reverend Mother. Alia is actually the one who kills the Baron with the Gom Jabbar, not Paul.
    - Chani is not against the prophecy and is one of Paul's biggest supporters. As a Fremen, she was trained in some of the ways of the Bene Gesserit by the old Reverend Mother, and when Jessica becomes the new Reverend Mother, Chani is elevated to Sayyadina (Friend of God) in the sietch. She is a voice of wisdom in the sietch.
    - Paul's one way of everyone surviving and succeeding was always that he would marry Princess Irulan. However, Chani did not run off...Jessica consoles Chani. This is because Paul tells Chani that while he marries Irulan, she will only have his name and nothing else. No touch, warmth, love, or child. It is a political marriage. Jessica tells Chani, with the final words of the novel, that, "while we who bear the name of concubine, history will call us wives."
    Dune 3 has a greenlight to be made, but the script needs to be written. It is based on the second Dune novel, Dune Messiah. Denis Villeneuve has said he needs a break with a different film before taking on the last Dune film he will direct, so it will be a few years. This one is more philosophical, and while it takes place 12 years after Dune...but if Anya Taylor Joy will play Alia Atreides again for Dune Messiah, the timeline will change (along with other things).
    BTW, NOBODY knew about Anya Taylor Joy as Alia until just a couple of days before the release of the film...that was a secret kept close to the vest, and it shocked the hell out of everyone!

    In drinking the Water of Life, he can see all of his ancestor's memories. Alia, his unborn sister, inherited Jessica's ability to see all of her female ancestors. She was "preborn". A Fetus with ancient knowledge and memories. Paul Attreides was intended as a warning by the author against following even the most virtuous and well-meaning charismatic leaders, since they will still make bad choices with countless lives at stake.

    I love your reactions SOOOO much! You are EPIC!! It was so fun to watch you! And you need to see this in theater before it's too late.
    And you are right that Paul fights hard against his terrible purpose (the Holy War) but that the story ends in tragedy, when he finally submits and accepts the terrible purpose - because this is the true antagonist of his story.
    Dune is above all a cautionary tale against charismatic leaders and messianic figures. A key quote from the novel sums up what Paul means to the Fremen: No more terrible disaster could befall your people than for them to fall into the hands of a Hero.

He gave the Fremen their Green Paradise, destroyed possibly the evilest dudes in the Universe and avenged his innocent House. Are those not the acts of a hero? Also dont know if anyone has commented but the water of live, because of paul training and genetic profile, made it posible for him to drink it without dying and at the same time for him not to lose his mind once it was opened, the water of life is loaded with concentrated spice, that opening of the mind is literally he being able to reach to his genetic past, he being able to do that allows him to predict the future or posible futures, allowing him to choose a path, his personality changes a bit becaus well like we are all the sum of our life experiences, he now has his life experiences and centuries of his ancestors life experiences.

    I would love to see Star Wars. A fun way to do the StarWars movies is to not watch them in the order they came out, but in the actual canonical order. Its really fun to see as a StarWars fan because you'll meet characters at very different times (and ages) then we originally did.
    Technically the animated series are also canon, but that is a tall order (133 (!) Episodes in 7 season in Clone Wars alone not even counting 4 Seasons of Rebels). In general the live action Disney+ Series are theoretically skippable (you wont miss anything) but they are really good so I would recommend watching them anyway. They provide some very nice world building and really build out some characters.
    P.S.: BTW Dune influenced Star Wars quite a bit. In general Dune is considered as the grandfather of modern SciFi a bit like Lord of the Rings is the template for a lot of modern Fantasy writing.

The Lord of the Rings is regarded, by many, to be a masterpiece trilogy.
