many years ago(about 30) on a trip up the Amazon River I witnessed a number of steam driven outboard engines. As fuel can be gathered along the way, it seemed a practical solution. I wanted to bring one home but but my money wouldn't stretch so far.
Bredah Jake Drive mechanism outside of the boat, steam generation within. Yes it does stretch the term of outbound driven steam motor. If the steam generator was anyplace back near or included with the drive mechanism, then yes could be called an outboard motor, otherwise no. That is the main differentiation with inboard and outboard motors when it comes to gasoline or any other fuel, why should this not also apply to steam engines, no matter what the fuel?
Should have called it "Nofreeboard motors". I'll tell you why some of those didn't move hardly. To much Tea and Crumpets for those river pilots. Some bloody good engineering, but the power to weight was off. Put the kids in there next time.
Competitive diy steam outboards ? Truly, the world is a wonderful place. Love you nutters!
That paddle steamer looked like fun! Slip eccentric?

Stretching the term 'Outboard Motor' a little.
