First of all ceramic and clay are different things and the one you use it airdry clay I assume and making airdry clay hard is the water in it getting dry by time, so if you pour any water on it, it will start going back to it's original texture, that's why I only use airdry clay in the decorations, making a pallette with it is really bad idea from start, especially if you use acrylic paints, cause acrylic paints are water based and even if there is varnish you use at pallete the varnish even water based, by time the acrylic varnish and paint will start cracking cause the clay is literally taking all the moisture in the paints etc, my advice is using airdry clay as decorations only and if you want a pallette from clay use polymer clay or ceramic clay instead, I hope I could help you a bit! (sorry for my English, not my first language)

Thank you so much! I might try polymer clay because I’ve tried it before and it’s easy to find in stores 😊

You can use air dry clay to make a paint pallet, but you have to seal it properly.
The hardwere store in my town sells a spray paint sealer that i use to seal my airdry tools.
Also, when sealing anything made of airdry clay, i recommend doing several thiner layers of sealent, letting each layer dry in between.
You need to really build up the sealent, but doing one really thick coat will make it look globby and unappealing.
    Edit:spelling

Thank you for the tips! The varnish I used was quite globby and thick, so I probably did the coats too thick, I’m going to try again with a different sealant and if that doesn’t work, I’ll try polymer clay 😁
