If you can see the thunderstorm and it’s not over 40km away, you still have a chance of being struck (called bolts from the blue, lightning can jump out out the top of storms and hit many kilometres away from the storm)

Hi, I know it’s late, but it will only save you if it doesn’t hit you directly. If lightning hits the ground near you, the current might go up your body. If you have both legs apart, the current will go through your torso or near your heart which can stop it while having legs touching gives it a faster path away from vital organs
