when i was 19 (circa 1976) i sat front row center in a tiny club to see Steve with Stuff... even though he had a cinder block in his kick drum, it kept sliding away, so after one song he asked me to put my feet against it to keep it from sliding... (THAT's how tiny the joint was!)... all night i had my feet practically inside his kick drum... when the night was over he asked me to stick around... we chatted as he tore his kit down... he had to leave for a few moments and asked if i would hold on to his cymbal bag for safekeeping... later he invited me to his hotel room, where his then-wife was sleeping... she actually got out of bed, went to a nearby convenience store, and bought me some snacks and drinks... i stayed for an hour or more, incredulous that i was sharing this time with a hero... a night i'll never forget... Steve forgot, though... lol... I've talked to him since... (even played with him! i'm a bassist)... still my favorite drummer ever...

obvi•US : man that’s a nice story! End 70s Steve performed in Belgium for Yamaha. I wasn’t there but a friend who worked for Yamaha brought me Steve’s sticks. I even could smell his aftershave on those sticks. Unfortunately I don’t have the sticks anymore. But for me Steve influenced most of modern drumming together with Ringo. Grts from Belgium

Steve is a master of "underplaying" the cymbals. He doesn't drown out a whole frequency range with bashing and crashing.

Well, I appreciate this interview but to my personal opinion Steve’s cymbals are still a mystery to me. One of the things what it makes difficult is that Steve’s taste changed in time. Please don’t see my comment as a bad thing because I have a huge respect for Stevie Gadd and I’m a fan for about 41 years. Since I saw Steve’s drumvideo “Up Close” I totally fel in love with the ride that Steve used their and I’m 99,99% sure that it’s a 18” EAK Prototype (Heavy) Ride (Early American K) which was not lathed al lot. Maybe the bottom side but not the Top side. I remember me being excited as a kid being a grown man behind a kit with the brand new Session cymbals and the first thing I noticed was the most important cymbals in recognising Steve’s cymbal sound was that the hi hats and ride had a brilliant finish and so they sounded: to fresh and clear, not a smokey, dry sound. I understood that Steve had a pair of very old K hats (old stamp could be from the transition “Constantinople Trademark to “made in Turkey”, more heavy than thin cymbals). One day Steve could’t use the top anymore because it had to much metal fatigue (as you can see in the Grover Washington concert, all his cymbals had cracks) so he combined the bottom as a top with other cymbals like a very old New Beat Top as a bottom: the effect: nice presence ride-ish sound on top, because of a thinner bottom a warm dry total sound and a open sjoep sound. Steve also like’s to feel the resistance of the metal also while playing. Further, I gave up hope to find me a copy of Steve’s prototype ride and named that on the Cymbalholic website where a guy said it all: “It’s not the arrow ... it’s the Indian”. And 100% right he was. I’ve seen Steve playing with his band during his 70’s tour and I never heard him play so good, tight timekeeper and a great positive human being. He’s from another planet! Thanks Steve. Zildjian: please throw out the brilliant finish in the Session cymbals series. The man is brilliant, not the finish of the cymbals where in people recognise Steve’s playing. Thanks.

I play a K Constantinople top with a New Beat bottom.
The top has a dark wash and the brighter, higher-pitched, heavier bottom gives it more volume especially when played with the foot pedal. The full pair of K Constantinople was too quiet and dark.

Steve nowadays always resorts to that same tired triplet pattern at 7.53.He has become SO predictable in his old age. He's a national treasure though for his drumming contributions.

    • @robinjohnson6301

At 7:53 those are not triplets, they're 16th notes. He doesn't start playing triplets until 8:01.

''lower our standards..'', listen, you don't play. He does. This is why Zildjian is getting left behind by drummers that don't just play rock, because companies like bosphorus and Diril make cymbals that 'give' and are a quarter of the price. I play for a living and I know the old A cymbals and K cymbals are really sought after, I have a few, but the new stuff unfortunately my colleagues and myself won't go near them. I had a conversation with a very well known drummer recently who said that he was sponsored by you but on the gig, used a couple of Bosphorus rides. Up your game, gentlemen. You've become a company for rock drummers, stop relying on your name, your rides are appalling. No give, bearly crashable, don't open up. You think Brian Blade would just pull something off the shelf from your company? Nope.
