They had wanted to cover a Mr Bungle song at the time as they were all huge fans (especially Rev and Syn) and thought they could put an interesting spin on it. Their label at the time wasnt on board as Mr Bungle arent particularly a big band so they made them cover Paranoid. The guys were pissed so they half-assed it as much as they could while it could still be released. Thats why the solo is as it is.
