One mitigation tactic I use against the pests in this climate is to put little "lizard hotels" around the inner empty space of the garden beds where the activity is most prominent. When they move in, a lot of worm and fly damage seems to stop. Gardens with more structural elements(fences, trellising, etc) or overgrown types of foliage may also find warblers visiting eating the aphids from the undersides of the leaves. 🤗🤗
I'm pushing it in NE FL, still planting cold weather crops and some spring crops. I do have frost covers but only been covering the tomatoes, beans and peppers that are still going. Trial and error, ready to reseed anything that doesn't like my wild plans!
I do romaine head lettuce and have NO bug damage! Also 10A. Seeds are from Seed The Stars, so they’re central Florida adapted. All my other lettuces I do cut and come again. My three favs for this time of year are dino kale, tatsoi, and chijimisai.
I'm at the top of Florida in now 9b. I have done all the sowing of winter vegetables. Closer to the end of the month I will sow tomatoes, peppers & eggplants inside. It's beginning!!
I hope you had a great vacation! I have noticed I do best with cut and come again for all my greens and lettuces. I think they grow better when I take the outer leaves before they get a chance to get too big and flop on the soil, get diseases or eaten by pests. I want to get more tomato seeds too, I can't wait to see what kind you plant! I really want the purple galaxy from baker creek but they don't have it for sale until next year. I found a variety called Tropic Tomato from southern exposure that I'm going to try. I got the Charleston Belle sweet pepper from them and Carolina Cayenne, they are both doing great!
My Texas grano were the only onion seeds that came up. I failed at all my hot peppers this year, even my transplants died! Just ordered a Vego bed to put more spring plants in. I'm in Polk county and we just rezoned to 10a
My home Depot still has seeds this year. They put what they had left on the end aisles. Not too many tomatoes left but at least they didn't throw away the seeds like they did last year.
I'm in 9b, border of Lutz & Tampa. I'm glad to learn I can still plant seeds. A few pepper & onion seeds didn't take. Going to reseed now. Thanks for all this info. Also I haven't seen any videos on wildflowers in a while. I think this is the time to grow milkweed, I'm not really sure. Would like a winter version of wildflower care & seed collection. Thanks again
I just replanted sugar snap and shelling peas. I’m also planting some bush style green beans. I have lots of brassicas, garlic onions and carrots already going. My beets need to be replanted, or I need to give up trying. Hope you had a nice vacation!
I never want to correct a content creator, however I would like to add this comment to your statement about worms not liking the heat of Florida. It's true they don't like the direct sunlight but it is also true that they like the cold even less. I've been doing vermicomposting for years here in central Florida. I've learned to put my worm bins in the shade verses direct sunlight. Also, cover them if you are going to get a lot of rain. They do well and provide me with lots of compost and worm castings. It has taken me many years to get it right, and it takes many months to get a finished product. There is a lot of information online to help (some good and some not so good). I hope people will attempt vermicomposting, using red wiggles are the best. Thanks Jackie for all your videos. Please tell me the name of the red plants in the background at 19.11 in the video, I was given one and I don't know what it is.
I am starting my first crop of beets in the sunny part of my garden and soon I will start my second crop of beets in the shady section that will be sunny in 8 weeks.
I had some pepper plants the were nothing but stems and thought they were goners somehow I overlooked pulling them out and they surprised me by growing anyway 🤣 Also, was going over this year garden notes and was sort of deflated by how many failures were noted that’s when I decided to look at the glass half full because overall the wins were more than the losses. All happened in the new Florida zone 10a… keep sowing and growing girl 😊
Can somebody please tell me what pest on the peppers seedlings (25:08)? My peppers plants has the same pest. I'm not sure how to treat it or if I have to reseed peppers again
Thankyou for mentioning the millipedes actually being good for the garden!!! My mom and I have thought that they weren’t good! Hope you had a wonderful vacation!
I am having the worst luck with Everglades Tomatoes. It's just hanging on, not thriving. Does it need special fertilizer or something. It's planted in a fabric bag. Any suggestions? My Roma tomatoes look great. Merritt Island, FL Zone 9
I love romaine and oak leaf lettuce. I had great luck last year in Miami-Dade (zone 10b). They lasted me for a few month doing cut-and-come-again. No peppers will grow for me. I have tried green, banana peppers, and a few others. Could possibly be the iguanas eating the flowers off the plants.
I'm in the miani dade area (zone 11a). I have two years trying to grow peppers, mostly bell peppers. I purchased a jalapeno and bell pepper plant from Home Depot. Pepper plants produced like 5 very small peppers 😂. Did your peppers plants ever got this weird white powder on it?
Agree about oakleaf lettuce 👍🙌 For Miami try Cubanelle and Aji Dulce peppers. Aji peppers are from the Caribbean and thrive even in the summer. Put them in a semi shade down there. About 4 hours of sun.
@@doreenaitken5308 if you get them early enough and planted soon after buying they will work out. i just got shallots from there because i never have luck with onion seed
Parris Island Romaine Lettuce is my favorite. I have great luck with them. I cut and come again with them. Just chop off the tops and they come back. The last one I got was Botanical Interests but I think any brand does well. My husband is always amazed at how well it does. I'm in 9a zone.
Do an experiment and fertilize some and not others. If you use organic granular ,that takes a long time to break down it will take too long. in these colder months. Try some fish emulsion or something that would be faster. Compost tea, or simply some good granular man made fertilizer.
Hi there, I know it’s a bit early, but I’m in Pinellas 10b now, and I want to start watermelon and zucchini in seed starters. Do you have a seed variety you recommend for these? I’m looking for the smaller cannonball types of watermelon but I’ve heard others have not had much success. Thanks
Sunshine Mimosa - is that sunshine mimosa in your front bed with your peppers? Looks like you're using it as a ground cover/ mulch. How well does it work for you? How easy is it to propagate?
I did romaine lettuce and oak leaf lettuce here in New Port Richey. Both grew well and were delicious, but recently the oak leaf lettuce went to flower rather quickly. The romaine seems very hardy though.
No worries 😉 Normally two times a week. For the seedlings, I watered daily for the seeds (two to three weeks), then moved to every other week for a couple of weeks. Now three times a week.
According to the Florida Department of Ag you shouldn’t plant strawberries until December in zone 10a. The ones I’ve planted this month are all thriving. The ones I planted earlier all died.
The majority are from Southern Exposure. A few are from seeds I saved. And a few are Ferry Morse brand which I snagged at Home Depot but you can also find those at Lowe’s and Target and Walmart at times and also grab online

We dehydrate our green onions and add to dishes that call for onion. Adds a subtle onion flavor.
I didn’t know you could do that! Thank you Nicole! 😊
I use a photo case, for my seed packets. It has 16 plastic locking cases inside, and you could use it by season to keep your seed packets organized
I also started using a photo case for my seeds
Did you find this locally or online?
@@doreenaitken5308 there are alot of choices and cheaper ones.

Congratulations on the onions 🧅 That’s frustrating about the peppers 🌶️ ☹️ Hopefully you can start fresh in the new garden bed!
When will you add mulch to your beds? I made the mistake of trying to seed around the mulch. Hopefully I will eventually get it right.
My home Depot still has seeds this year. They put what they had left on the end aisles. Not too many tomatoes left but at least they didn't throw away the seeds like they did last year.
No way! What a great change! Hopefully this is a trend for Home Depot 🤞

Green stalks for lettuce works great!!❤❤
We use green onions in everything! Most of the ones we have now are roots planted from store bought onions.

My first time growing tomatoes in Southwest Florida. What insects should I be aware of? Tomatoes worms. Any “rots” or blight”?
I put lettuce in my indoor hydrophonic system and have lettuce and no bugs year around 10 a sw fl
Love that Marilyn!
