A lot of these artifacts were not just art to us Africans. They carried spiritual meaning, and some, not all, were used for special rituals and some were built to honor particular ancestors. It was way more than art that they were taking, they knew how spiritually connected we were to our art. Our ancestors had to watch their art get looted, which literally crushed their spirit as well.

@Ogun OgunI think we should concentrate on what we have control over. For example, President Akufo-Addo is giving foreign corporations with immense international power access to the Ghanaian economy. Twitter is setting up shop when Ghanaian startups could do the same thing if they had support from the government, foreign auto manufacturers are going to open factories even though Ghana already has Kantanka and a young genius who built his own car from scraps, and now Britain and Ghana just signed a trade agreement whereby Ghana will export cocoa to Britain although President Akufo-Addo said he wasn't going to export cocoa to Switzerland anymore. Africa needs to guard against letting foreign corporations coming onto to continent to use its large population as a supermarket when it can support its existing industries that can do the same thing. Our leaders are selling us out. Nigeria's Innoson should be selling automobiles to Africans throughout the continent. Where's the organization and unity?

It is now home and standing proud in Axum, Ethiopia. What distinguishes Italy from other European nations is that, in 1947, they signed an agreement with the UN to return all Ethiopian stolen loot.

Literally just finished my essay on this topic for my expository writing class. The restitution of African artifacts from western museums is very much complicated. Especially when discussing Black American identity with museums like the MET in New York, the issues becomes much more layered. Education, cultural identity, wealth, Black youth, historical knowledge are all wrapped up. Funny that this popped up after I was done writing. Much respect✊🏾

Africa isn't where it is because we aren't conquering/didn't conquer others. Besides who would we need to conquer? We already have all of the resources. Going out and conquering everyone everywhere is the white man's mentality.
Africa is where it is now because we didn't sufficiently defend ourselves. Today we're not even putting up a fight. Before we go and take from others, we need to focus on keeping what's ours.

Where did he work? Which country? Reach out to the government, take pictures and make public announcements in various media of your intentions to return the artifacts.
If you do it quietly with government officials, they may sell it off to Europeans or auction it on the black market. There's a lot of corruption in African politics, so you have to ensure you do things right!

the reason why they did that is because they could do that at the time, history has always been a matter it's a matter of might makes right,
the strongest nations are those who have had a bloody history and most of the time eurasian kingdoms dominated the history,
in medieval sub-saharan africa there were many kingdoms/empires like the Mali Empire, Wagadou/Ghana Empire, Wene wa Kongo/Kingdom of Kongo, Kanem-Bornu Empire, wolof empire, Mutapa, oyo empire, Nri Kingdom, Benin Kingdom, Aksum/abyssinia, Alodia, and Mapungubwe.
Kingdoms like Mali, Aksum Kongo, Wagadou, Kanem Bornu Empire, were also major regional powers, wth Mali and Aksum being in my opinion in top 6 of most powerful kingdoms in the world, Kingdom of Kongo was also one of the most powerful in the world because they could go toe to toe against Portugal which at that moment was still one of the strongest states in the world, for example Aksum was 4th strongest state in the world at it's prime.
people who say that africa has no history or historical powerhouses are wrong, it's true that Africa now is not yet very powerful on the world stage, but if an african country is going to become a superpower on earth it's going to be in early to mid 22nd Century and that might be Nigeria if they manage to fix their problems another country that will rival it will be Congo if it manages to solve it's issues.

The Benin Bronzes should be taken back to West Africa but every decade should be taken on tour, so that members of the African Diaspora, if nothing else, can gaze at them and know that their ancestors were not savages but geniuses.

Excellent video. Very interesting, informative and worthwhile video. It is said that if you want to see old African art and artifacts, you must travel to European museums because almost none remain in Africa. The looted art and artifacts should be repatriated and now Africa has the means of getting them returned. They can withhold access to essential mineral wealth to countries that refuse to repatriate items. I might further add that those that possess items in private collections should at the very least photograph the items and post them online for the benefit of educators, students, and scholars.

    • @thatangrywickedtardigrade.39
      @thatangrywickedtardigrade.39 3 года назад

i would say nope they can't withold the former european colonial masters from getting resources as those countries are still far above the african countries in many ways, the only ones who are militarily powerful are Egypt, Algeria South Africa, and Nigeria, but even in the present the former colonial powers are still amongst the most developed and powerful nations on earth in both soft and hard power, if Us stops being the policeman of the world, the West Africa will either be recolonized by French while parts of north it will become turkish territory, while central and east africa will become Chinese Puppets.
remember African countries suffer from one thing worse than anything and that is instability which can decide many key factors including whenever said country it's more easily conquered or not.

@@robertschlesinger1342 The thing is that the colonial powers were racist thieveing, liars, but if we count east and southeastern europeans then most of the folks here have never heard about Africa at all, during 19th century but still who is to say that Chinese do not have nefarious interests in africa anyone who comes comes out of pure interests.
The Europeans are not racist anymore apart from some fringe neonazi groups same thing with US but generalizing population of entire countries or continents is a bad thing to do, as your average citizen has nothing to do with all of those, the colonizers were thieving and brutal racists who only cared about getting resources, they saw anyone who is not white as subhuman regardless of skin color which is not the case anymore in the present day everyone is equal regardless of skin color.
When China goes into Africa it comes because it has interests there in politics and trade there are no real friends only interests and this has always been the case.
World's history has been always dictated not by trust but by might makes right and this will always be the case forever.
if the French, British, Germans, Spanish, Portuguese, Italians, want resources and the access to them is denied to them they are willing to wage the euro-african war I mentioned, dragging even the eastern and southeastern countries that nothing to do with african slavery and colonization into the conflict either by diplomatic means or by force the only one who can stand up to the western europeans are the Russians but if they become a part of the conflict they will Automaticly join the European side.

@@cinnamonstar808 europeans did the colonisation for 4 big reasons overpopulation fervor, Desire for Resources/Greed, Lust for Power arrogance is the same thing as pride which is a inherent human characteristic the only thing that truly separates pride and arrogance is the fact that arrogance is mostly just overbearing pride,
humans are not like lions or zebras, humans are like great apes greedy/rapacious, deeply hierarchical and power hungry, and this is the universal law of mankind,
Europe was an overpopulated bloody battlefield full of fiercely competing states which would lead to constant technological development, and those produce the best rulers, fighters/warriors, the mankind has ever produced apart from Mongol horse archers from classical age to the modern age, china had the economy and superior technological edge for a time but Europeans in 1500s started to become the most advanced in the world,
it's a complete lie to blame it on envy,
stone does not last forever it only lasts for billions of years at best, the noses of egyptian statues either eroded before the europeans arrived, or had their noses by Arabs long before most european expeditions came,
do you know why europeans did so is because they had a war culture, and when they recovered after the black death the culture changed which mean't that people could spend more time developing arts education sciences which were a massive help so even before the colonization per capita Europe was the richest area in the world in 1400s in terms of per capita, the conquest was mostly for the reasons i mentioned also most of the greatest scientists in the world were european,
Europe had competition between Kingdoms, the guns germs and steel explains very well why Europeans dominated the world if africa and Europe were born in the opposite direction it would be similar, besides modern university was invented in Europe and besides they had a massive geographic advantage they were close to middle east which mean't that they had access to middle eastern technology easily due to extensive trade Europe was full of small countries that were at war with eachother constantly, Europe was one of the most militaristic society in the entire history of mankind also another huge boon they got was the printing press which would help spreading information faster which helped with knowledge a lot.
European used logic, reason, and scientific method to look at their world. So, they find better way to reorganize it another big factor for European world conquest the europeans are also the inventors of another thing that is capitalism which is another factor besides they were some of the first to use common sense as their cultural part
in conclusion if you want to know why europeans did what they did read Guns germs and steels alongside my answer.

I love the bronze works from Benin the most, but equally the head costumes are superb. Very expensive now they are purchased by the Europeans. On eBay there are many being sold. On RUclips you can see how much works go into the bronze works. Wax works. The sad thing is they are taken from Africa and sold for a lot more Money.

Although I agree that objects excavated and outright stolen should be returned, (if those African governments have the conditions to take care of them) those ones gained as spoils shouldn't.
